      Choose lean proteins such as skinless chicken or turkey. Red meat is a good source for protein, but it contains hefty portions of fat and cholesterol. If you choose to eat red meat, eat smaller portions and trim the fat off of the meat.

      Eat more vegetables for snacks and side dishes. Vegetables are filled with vitamins and minerals and contain heart-healthy carbohydrates instead of fats. Avoid adding fatty creams, gravy or butter to them to avoid additional fats.

    • Eat fruits for breakfast and for snacks. Fruits contain healthy carbohydrates and essential vitamins. You can eat a grapefruit for breakfast and obtain vitamins while avoiding fat and cholesterol.

      Avoid fast food. Fast food hamburgers, cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches are saturated in fats. Many fast foods are fried and a source of fats, especially trans fats. Trans fats are associated with cancer risk and also have high doses of cholesterol.

      Purchase non-fat dairy products. Foods such as cheese and milk are available in non-fat or low-fat versions. You can avoid the fats and cholesterol in dairy by using low-fat milk in whole-grain cereal in order to obtain the benefit of heart-healthy grains in the diet.
