Vinegar takes on killer..

The fight against cervical cancer just got a fillip. A new, cost-effective test uses the kitchen ingredient to detect it. In contrast to pap smear, the vinegar test is a visual one that does not require a lab.

The efficacy of the test lies in its simplicity. The results are known within minutes, and primary health workers can carry it out.

A trained primary health worker swabs the woman's cervix with a solution made of four parts of glacial acetic acid or vinegar and 96 parts of water. A minute later, the cervix is observed in bright light. The acetic acid causes the cancerous or precancerous tumours to turn white. The health worker studies the patch and refers the woman for further diagnosis.

In search of fair babies, Indians seek Caucasian donors for IVF..

Mayuri M, 36, married into a fair-skinned family. She herself is what is often described in matrimonial columns as 'wheatish'. When she couldn't conceive, she walked into an IVF clinic with her demand: a 'white'' baby. "I had read on the internet that one could access a donor who is fair. I decided to opt for one so that the child blends in with the family."

(Me: The news isn't very surprising, for it is very well known that Indian men and women, especially parents, themselves not so-fair skinned, have an extraordinary love for white-skin for their kids and more female kids and brides… and loathe even relatively dusky people. They easily forget the colour of the skin is largely determined by the climate prevalent in a region e.g. people living close to the equator are bound to have darker skin tone)

Woman gets head stuck in banister during sex.

Moscow: A lover having sex on a flight of stairs had to be rescued after getting her head stuck between some banister railings. The 46-year-old, from Lipetsk in Russia, said she wanted to "spice things up" with her boyfriend when the unfortunate accident happened. A neighbor called police after finding the woman naked and on her knees in a stairwell, unable to free herself. She told police she had consensual sex with her partner, who had left the scene before officers and ambulance staff arrived. An emergency worker said: "In all my time I don't recall any incident like this."

(Me: Moral: 'variety' at times is fraught with hazard..physical and psychological trauma!)
