What you mentioned here is partially correct. CBSE affiliated schools
have to use NCERT textbooks from class IX. It's mandatory.
Till class 8, they can use text books of other publications.
Even from class IX, for languages, NCERT has two courses,
Course A and B, For example English, Course A is Communicative
English, which is very good and Course B is Language
and Literature which is quite simple. The school can decide
depending upon their standard.
And textbooks are not enough, scoring marks depend
on many factors, teachers who handle the subject, the school
environment, the person's hard work, interest, even the fellow students.
CBSE conducts exam for students of class IX onward, the rest of the classes
have their exams conducted by the school ( for eg. setting of question
paper, correction, datesheet, everything).
From class IX onward, all the CBSE schools should have common syllabus.
If any school doesn't follow the directives of the Board,
they could cancel their affiliation.
Even though NCERT textbooks are easy to read, if they are taught
by a good teacher, all the students, the bright ones, the average, the
late bloomers, each of them would benefit from them. They are
designed in that manner. And the teacher has to be very resourceful,
have a passion for teaching and love for children.
But nowadays, teaching is just another job.

When I studied Pre degree I had an NCERT text, and I got the lowest marks and my colleugues has other publications and they scored high.
There is a difference between easy to read and easy to study
NCERT books are easy to read
But
I you want to study go for other publications..they are more systematic.
