Tamil film lyricist's Vaali passes away Wednesday..

Until the death of the redoubtable, Kannadasan, the doyen of Tamil film lyrics, in the early 1980s, Vaali played a distant second fiddle to him, although he was the preferred choice of the late MGR, the then top star-hero because he wanted all his songs to have particular ring and flavor. The most memorable and electrifying song penned by Vaali for MGR was the Naan Aanayittal, Adu Nadanthuvittal number from the mega hit, Enga Veettu Pillai, that saw its Hindi version as Ram Aur Shyam with Dilip Kumar essaying his double role.

Vaali was the most prolific Tamil film lyricists of all time and had had the longest innings of over 5 decades churning hits after hit song lyrics. The other two big names, Kannadasan first, and Vairamuthu then, had a relatively shorter run at the pinnacle.

In the earlier era of films, many loved songs as much for their meaningful lyrics as for their melody.

RIP

**

Two old friends met by chance on the street. After chatting for some time on said to the other, "I'm terribly sorry, but I've forgotten your name. You'll need to tell me."

The other stared at him thoughtfully for a long time, then replied, "How soon do you need to know?"

From the world of science…

Surgical abortion was well known in the ancient world though, due to lack of anesthetics and antibiotics, it was dangerous and painful. Celsus (c 25 BC-AD 50) provides the most complete account of a dilatation and curettage (D&C) operation, which required placing one, sometimes two hands, into the uterus to strengthen the fetus and then extracting the fetus with a book.

(Me: We may now abhor the method in horror, but it wasn't something very abnormal considering the level scientific development then…)

Earth's gold came from colliding dead stars…

Gold is rre on Earth in part because it's also rare in the universe. Unlike elements like carbon or iron, it cannot be created within a star. Instead, it must be born in a more cataclysmic event – like one that occurred last month known as a short gamma-ray burst (GRB). Observations of this GRB provide evidence that it results from the collision of two neutron stars – the dead cores of stars that previously exploded as supernovae.

Weird world…

Learner calls police to complain about late instructor.

A learner driver phoned the police to complain when his instructor was late, and West Midlands Police in the US has posted the recording of the call to highlight time-wasters. The man dialed 999 after he had an argument with his instructor over her reported tardiness. The caller can be heard saying during the call: "I've got an emergency. The tutor who's supposed to be teaching me to drive came late and now she's asking me to get out of her car. She's saying I'm giving her attitude. I need someone to complain to. Who should I complain to?"

New Delhi: Air India has discovered that almost 400 airhostesses of its cabin crew strength of 3,600 who had taken a two-year leave without pay as per company policy have simply not returned to work although heir leave got over a long time back.

(Me: This is one of the problems if you give job security to government and public sector employees. Mind you, this isn't an isolated instance, either; similar are the cases in all the government departments)

Tongue very much in cheek..

I rant, there I am!

News of the day…

Rajat Gupta fined $13.9 million for insider trading…

(Me: Will such a poster boy like Rajat Gupta be tried in India, let alone be punished with imprisonment AND huge fine? Our media, that finds faults with all and sundry, would support him to the hilt and implore the authorities to take a lenient view due to his pre-eminent position and prestige in society)

"Democracy is necessary to peace and to undermining the forces of terrorism" – Beaazir Bhutto.

(Me: No, a democracy by itself cannot, as we have been seeing to our consternation and cost. Any form of government BUT with the necessary resoluteness and single-mindedness of purpose can do it..)
