[www.keralites.net] khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 23/7/13

"I don't want Mody as my prime minister" - Amartya Sen

(Me: Whoever asked for his opinion and who is he to say or decide who should or shouldn't be our PM in a democracy where anyone with a majority public mandate can rule? He shot to fame only after he received the Nobel prize – I think jointly with an American - for economics. At least I had not heard of his name ere his laureate prize. I, for one, hold that economics is dismal science. I would very much like to know from this worthy if he has a sure-fire panacea for the country's economic ills without couching his proposals with ifs and buts. And because it is a democracy, albeit sham or non-functioning, the clamour by lot many people against Rahul becoming PM is untenable. Nobel prize for economics should be abolished).

Weird world…

German tourists strips, plunge into Swiss fountain

A group of overweight German tourists raised eyebrows on a trip to Switzerland – when they stripped off and plunged into a fountain to cool down.

Dubai 'pardons' Norwegian rape victim…

Horror law: The woman was charged of having sex outside marriage, which is illegal according to the Shariat-influenced law in the Emirate. A Norwegian woman in a rape case in Dubai said she was pardoned Monday of an extramarital sex charge in the emirae and allowed to fly home, ending a four-month ordeal.

Robbers force victims to give them Ramzan feeds…

Islamabad: Robbers stormed a home in the Pakistani capital, beat up the family and made off with valuables worth Rs.3 million after forcing the women of the house to prepare 'sehri' or the pre-dawn meal in the month of Ramzan.

After six months in coma, she monkeys around..

Members of People for Animals (PFA) rescued Jhumri, a baby monkey that fell off a tree last year near Bangalore. Six months later, when everyone had long given up hope of her recovery, she regained consciousness, but has lost her eyesight. In the beginning, she found it difficult to eat and even fumbled while walking. A team of PFA members then began training her from scratch. Six months on, it is amazing what she can do, including sensing a rope in front of her some distance away and neatly jumping on to it.

He replied, "Mother Nature and Father Time."

Fact of the matter.

The Romans did not use soap. To get rid of sweat and grime, they would cover themselves with oil and then scrape off the oil with a special scraper made of metal, wood or bone called a strigil. Nitrum, probably either potassium or sodium carbonate, was burned and rubbed on the teeth to restore colour.

(Me: This is for those who swear, old is gold!).
