[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 30/3/13

40-year-old man killed while trying to start bike.  Two-wheeler caught fire after battery exploded when bike was kick-started.

Think it over…

"If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despite, we don't believe in it at all" – Noam Chomsky

(Meant for those gloating over their success, esp. in ToI, in thwarting NaMo from delivering his keynote address at Wharton...)

Quote of the day…
**

"TN political parties were only fomenting trouble between Sri Lanka's Tamil and Sinhalese population" – Valutham Dayanidhi (no, not DMK patriarch's grandson), former LTTE spokesperson.

(It is plain common sense that the virulent antics of the southern state government and politicians will serve no purpose whatsoever; on the contrary, things will only exacerbate for the already hapless Lankan Tamils with their government and local population hardening their stand.    If media reports are any indication, the local politicians with their unreasonable demands stand isolated in the entire country)

One woman to another: "My husband's idea of planning for the future is programming the DVR."

**

A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back towards his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave.  The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, "Why did you have to die?  Why did you have to die?"

The first man approached him and said, "Sir, I don't wish to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of pain is more than I've ever seen before.  For whom do you mourn so deeply?  A child?   A parent?"

The mourner took a moment to collect himself, then replied, "My wife's first husband."

Does God exist?  Read the following stories and be the judge.

1)   Two firms to pay Belapur man Rs.25,000 for 'misleading' ads..

The ads, featuring celebs, promised to change lives of those who bought 'miracle' beads and lockets.

Bhanudas Dhotre, a resident of Navi Mumbai, waited almost four months for his life to 'change' after he purchased rudraksh beads and a 'Dhanlakshmi Chakra'.  Dhotre, who was unemployed, was convinced of the products' divine powers after he saw celebrities extolling their virtues on television.  In December 2010, he placed the order with a firm which sourced the products from another firm, and charged him Rs.5,600.  The ad guaranteed 'favorable results' within 15 days of acquiring the beads and the chakra.  The complaint said his life didn't get any better even months after purchasing the products.

2)   Five of family commit suicide to 'meet Lord Shiva after death'
Kanchan Singh fed his family poisoned sweets with the promise of meeting god after a ritual in which they expected the deity to appear didn't work; he filmed the ritual.

Jaipur: Five members of a family, including 3 children, died after consuming poison to fulfill their dream of meeting Lord Shiva in heaven, after a macabre ritual (it is too gruesome even to describe here) in which they had expected the deity to appear before them failed.

Weird world…

Police chase cows in town…

Austrian police and firefighters have taken on the role of cowboys in a two-day round-up of a herd of cows that broke out of a fenced-off pasture and decided to go into town.  Police say the 43 animals defied attempts by police and volunteer firefighters to recapture them after wandering off Thursday, and heading towards the town of Freistadt.  After being chased away from the railway station, they stampeded onto a two-land highway before running into a town.  Eighteen animals are still loose.

34-year-old man accused of using fake penis for drug test.

A St. Louis-area man is facing criminal charges alleging that he used a prosthetic penis to try to pass a drug test.  Authorities say 34-year-old Sydney Levin was submitting a urine sample last week as part of his probation when an officer spotted him using a prosthetic, known as a Whizzinator.

Passengers on a cruise ship see a bearded man on a small island, shouting and desperately waving his hands.

"Who is it?" a passenger asks the captain.

"I've no idea.  Every year, when we pass by, he goes mad."

(Me: black humour, indeed)
