Crown Prince Naif has died: Royal Court
Crown Prince Naif has died, the Saudi Royal Court said today in a statement.
The statement said: "With deep sorrow and grief, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, announced the death of his brother, Crown Prince Naif Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior, who passed away on Saturday.
"A funeral prayer will be performed for his soul at the Holy Mosque in Makkah after Maghreb (sunset) prayer on Sunday.
"The Royal Court condoles the Saudi people on the deceased prince, praying to Allah Almighty to bless his soul and to reward him for his services to his religion and homeland."
Prince Naif, who served as Interior Minister for nearly four decades and led a crackdown on Al-Qaeda in the Kingdom, was named in a Royal Decree to succeed Prince Sultan who died in October 2011.
Prince Naif was born in the city of Taif in 1353AH, corresponding to 1934. He received his education at The Princes School and at the hands of senior ulema (religious scholars). In addition, he had read widely in politics, diplomacy, and security.
In 1953, he became Governor of Riyadh. From 1954 to 1970, he served as Deputy Minister of the Interior. In 1970, King Faisal promoted him to Minister of State for Internal Affairs.
In March 1975, Prince Naif became Minister of Interior.
In November 2001, he issued all Saudi women identity cards. Women were previously registered under their husbands or fathers name.
In March 2009, Prince Naif became Second Deputy Prime Minister. SG/SPA
