About one year ago, I faced with a similar problem. My son who was on residence visa left for India for higher studies and could not return back before six months and I wanted to cancel the visa. I took a photocopy of the passport to the Immigrations office and gave an extra (approx.) AED 150 and they cancelled the visa on the computer and gave me a receipt letter of cancellation. After that he comes to Dubai on visit visa and there were no problems at airport.
Cancellation is very simple and easy to do, as long as you are the sponsor. Please retain the receipt letter of cancellation in order to show to the Immigrations, in case if they raise any objections in issuing a fresh visa next time.
