No theory of evolution states that humans descended from the apes. Instead, the theory of evolution states that apes and chimps are our distant cousins which in turn means that we had common ancestors millions of years ago. If we go back further in time, we had common ancestors with all mammals. If we go back still further, we had common ancestors with all animals.. If we go back further we have common ancestors with trees and birds and reptiles which does not mean we are descended from snakes though some spit venom all the time. If we go back still further all living things had the same ancestor.
