Making her mark: New Gujarat CM Anandiven plans toilets in every home within two years :-
Trying to carve a niche for herself, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel recently told an industry delegation from Kutch that she would attend a local function only if the entrepreneurs there promised her to construct toilets in every home in the district.
The chief minister extracted an assurance that this would be done in two years.
At another event, Anandiben called upon the Election Commission to ensure that candidates, from the village panchayat at the parliamentary level had a toilet at their house, on pain of disqualification from contesting the polls.
The Gujarat chief minister is of the view that this measure will help spread awareness among the people and go a long way to ensuring the safety of rural women who have to go out in the fields to relieve themselves.
Anandiben said her statement could invite criticism but that such a move "is necessary for the welfare of women."
