This was a noble profession. Not any more. For a person to become a doctor the expense is in crores under management quota. Also one has to do MD and super speciality and work under a consultant over a period of 10 yrs min. before becoming a consultant oneself. After all that the Pharma companies ,and Laboratories are there to do spot fixing. Govt. is ensuring that caste quota system is perennial in higher education and jobs. Where then is the respect for merit ?? Top it all, very few seats are available overall in MBBS and MD. Under these conditions most of the doctors want to quickly make up the money spent by them. You also find that they prefer a doctor in marriage too. Poor creatures are so compelled by the society and circumstances. YET, NO TWO WRONGS MAKE ANYTHING RIGHT. Bad is bad if not worse. Crime cannot be justified by any means. 1. Abolish quota system in MBBS admissions. Only Merit list. 2. Uniform fees in Govt. and Pvt. colleges, which is affordable. 3. Govt, to compensate pvt. colleges for the difference for 10 yrs. and then take over from 11th year. The founders would have made enough Return on Investment by then. They can start a new college again. 4. Double the intake at MD and Super speciality level every three years 5. By mere supply and demand basis everything in medicare will become affordable 6. Make it compulsory for doctors to prescribe generic medicine. 7. There will be no need for any doctor to cheat the patient. This is my opinion and suggestion. Will Namo govt try it ??? msk From: "Thomas Mathew thomasmathew47@hotmail.com [Keralites]" <Keralites@yahoogroups.com> To: Keralites@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, 3 July 2014, 21:32 Subject: RE: [www.keralites.net] Doctors greedy, going to be hated: Health minister ( Maharastra ) Suresh Shetty Even a thief has a justification for what he is doing; I see the justification of doctors being corrupt from that angle only. Corruption was there in India from time immemorial. But doctors were not corrupt in India, at least in Kerala whom I know, some time 50-60 years back and they were worshiped by the patients. As time passed, the evil of private practice by Govt. doctors crept in and they started treating patients who pay them, with extra care, even then they were respected by the people. But now, 90% of the doctors have become totally corrupt in every possible way. They prescribe unwanted costly medicines to patients to earn benefits from pharmaceuticals. I know a doctor who went to Japan and Singapore on pleasure trips all expenses paid by a particular company. They sent patients for unwanted tests to labs to earn the commissions. I will conclude with two personal experiences with a well known private hospital in the capital city of Delhi and one small hospital in Kerala My friend, who had a mild heart attack in Gulf came to Delhi, where his wife was employed for further medical treatment. He went to a well known heart hospital and met a senior consultant. After conducting tests for which he had to spend about Rs.10000, the cardiac surgeon told him that he had to undergo open heart surgery immediately for which he would have to spend about Rs.4.5 lakhs, The person was shocked and the doctor then told him that if he was short of money a special discount of one lakh could be given. He said he would tell later and came out of the room and told his wife, who was waiting outside about it. At that time a malayalee nurse who was inside the room, when he was being examined , passed through and in a hushed tone, told him not to rush with the operation and go for a second opinion as the hospital is known doing operations for making money. Immediately he left the hospital and the next day, he went to All India Institute of Medical Science and met a malaylee cardiologist, who after examining him and seeing the test results told him that there was no need of surgery and that he could guarantee that he would not die of heart attack at least for the next five years, and prescribed some medicines. This happened about 20 years back, and my friend is now leading a normal life without any problem and he did not have any problem till now. Another incident, is relating to my mother. She felt a slight breathing difficulty and taken to the causality of a hospital in Central Travancore and a junior doctor on duty, declared that it is due to gas trouble and gave her an injection. My brother, who had taken her to the hospital requested the doctor to do an ECG to rule out the possibility of a heart attack. The doctor, who as in a hurry to go for lunch, declared that there was no need for ECG as he was sure it was a case of gas. She went back home and within half an hour she had a massive heart attack and died on the way to the hospital. After her burial I went to the Medical Superintendent of the hospital and he called for the file and to my utter shock, it was found that the junior doctor had written on the file, that ECG was refused by the person accompanying the patient; he had written it after the death. I wanted to file a police case against the junior doctor, but the medical superintendent virtually touched my feet as the reputation of the hospital was involved. Now Dr. Jayashanker, tell me what should be done with such doctors, I feel that they should not only be hated but beaten up in public and debarred from practicing. T. In India about 90% of doctors are greedy and corrupt. It is a vicious circle started by the education barons and government connivance in demanding capitation fees for medical colleges. As a result to recover their investment, doctors after graduating and starting their own practice fleece and bleed the poor patients. You might be an exception Dr. Sankar but gracefully accept that there is hugh corruption within medical fraternity.
