[www.keralites.net] khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 19/8/13

Out of the world's top 100 billionaires..

27 are heirs
73 are self-made.

Of the self-made..

18 have no college degree
36 are children of poor parents
But some billionaires had neither degree nor wealthy parents.

What some of the did or still do..

Invested during hard times;
Bought ruined companies.
Eats with employees.
Made one life-changing deal
Saw trends early
Micro manage their companies (spending judiciously and keeping an eye where each door went..)
Above all..

TRIED DIFFERENT BUSINESSES BEFORE THE ONE THAT CLICKED: in other words, the perquisite is patience, perseverance and a never-say-attitude in the face of adversity.

Tongue very much in cheek..

"If a dollar was worth one rupee in 1947, then 66 years later poetic justice suggests it should be worth 66 rupees instead of a tawdry variable between 61 or 62. A rupee a year is a lyrical measure of decline. A few rupees more, and the Indian economy could have become such a sing-alone nursery rhyme" – MJ Akbar in Times of India.

From the world of science…

Study finds lipsticks contain as many as nine metals…

Most lipsticks contain at least a trace of lead, earlier research has shown, but a new study from the University of California has found that 24 lip glosses and eight lipstick brands contained as many as eight other metals – including cadmium cobalt, aluminium titanium, manganese, chromium, copper and nickel. The cosmetics industry insists that the average lead level found, just above 1 parts per million, poses no real health risk. But lead tends to accumulate in the body, noted Dr. Sean Palfrey, medical director of lead poisoning prevention program at Boston University Medical Centre.

Bangladeshi scientists decode jute genome..Scientists in Bangladesh have succeeded in the sequencing the genome of a traditional variety of jute after months of research. It will enable the country, that's the world's largest producer of jute, to own all the genetic documents of the natural fibre.

(Me: Why not our scientists similarly crack the genome of rice?_

How common are prostate problems in men?

By age 60, as many as 90% of American men may have less-than-optimal prostate health. When a man is in his 20s, the prostate is typically walnut-sized, but with advancing age the prostate can balloon to the size of an egg.

News of the day…

NIA does not want to share Headley statement with CBI

The National Investigation Agency is averse to sharing statements made by 26/11 accused avid Headley with the CBI for its probe into a key encounter case, citing a confidentiality pact between India and the US.

(Comments: even as one isn't sure how sacred the 'confidential pact' is, the CBI is practically at the throats of IB in general and some of its officials in particular, so much so the term 'intelligence agency' has become a misnomer or joke in the country. Every country in the world has its own internal and external intelligence agencies like the FBI and CIA in the US, but everywhere the two work in tandem and in perfect harmony, totally unlike the belligerent postures they adopt in our country)

Tongue very much in cheek…

Tweet of the day: @Old_monk "We StandbySalmanKhan because if we stand in front of him, we might get run over.

**

One woman to another: "Jim and I got divorced on our first date. We thought it would be best to get that out of the way first thing."

In the blunder city of Mumbai…

The slumdwellers who illegally occupy government land and practically pay no taxes, are to be provided accommodation, worth Rs.60-70 lakhs, in 20-odd 27-storey towers in the city proper FOR FREE, while the tax-paying middleclass have no money to buy matchbox-like flats even far-away extended suburbs.

And yet, the slumwallas aren't v.happy and demand bigger flats gratis..
