The families at Konganpara near Puthur are living in fear because of electric shocks from a 220KV overhead electric line passing through the area from the Madakkathara substation.Presence of electricity is found on human bodies also. Electric tester also shows electricity in the bodies of people there. The problem began after charging the electric lines a month ago.
Nearly 22 families get electric shocks when they touch the walls of the houses and draw water from well with wet hands. They also get shock when they walk on wet surface without footwear. The worst affected are those who live in 10 houses under the electric line. Old people and children often fall ill due to the electric shock.
Jose Madari, a resident, said that they face severe problems during evenings from 6pm. It will be worse during midnight. Even the bulbs are working without electric connection.A resident who had an accident and two steel rods fixed inside his leg, is not able to be in the area during evenings and nights because of the shock.
Now, the residents are afraid of the rainy days. They have submitted complaints to all the authorities from the panchayat member to Union Minister KC Venugopal through MLA MP Vincent. But no solution or responses have been received so far.The families had filed complaints at the Vettukad electricity office and the Madakathara substation. Two engineers who came to check the area found eight houses affected by the shock. But they were unable to find a solution.
The residents doubt there are some problems with the connections or problems along the electricity lines which cause electric shock in the area.Jose said that the Kerala State Electricity Board authorities are not taking the issue seriously.
"Passing electricity through human body can be a silent killer. It affects the blood circulation and other functions in the body," experts said. The residents said that they are planning protests if the authorities continue to keep mum.
