Where it all beganJayalalithaa in a still from her debut Vennira Aadai

Shubashree Desikanrecalls Jayalalithaa's most memorable songs on the big screen

Living in Chennai in the 1960s meant growing up with Jayalalithaa. Especially, in a family like mine, obsessed with Tamil cinema and the glamour of the movies. The sensations of my times were Sridevi and Sripriya, admittedly. But, as any South Indian cinema buff knows, none could match the presence that was Jayalalithaa.
Those who've watched the films she starred in during the peak of her career will remember that Jayalalithaa played refreshingly bold characters. She certainly left an impression.
Of course, given the attitude of the times, many of these stories were woven around a modern and arrogant (read confident) girl tamed [sic] by the tradition-bound hero.
Even one of the more advanced films of her time, Suryakanthi — in which Jayalalithaa plays a successful career woman married to a man with an oversensitive ego — pampers the male ego, though it remains sympathetic to the woman in question.
Yaarukkum Vetkamillai (1975), written and directed by Cho Ramaswamy, was a shocker, portraying a woman cheated by her lover, who seeks to live beyond that experience. Though I have dim memories of this film, I distinctly remember the stir it created. The songs made more of an impact than the movie, to be honest. They were meaningful, and, admittedly, a bit moralistic… The title song, sung by K.J. Yesudas, was the most popular, and questioned the double standards in society for men and women.
When I started writing this, I wanted to explore the films of Jayalalithaa that have affected me deeply, and explore why. Now I realise that the songs and visuals remain in my mind, telling us their own story.
Two of the most beautiful songs of Jayalalithaa are 'Chittukuruvikkenna Kattuppaadu' from Savaale Samaali and 'Vaanamennum Veedhiyiley' fromAnnai Velankanni. These songs show different facets of the same personality. The former, sung by P. Susheela, shows a teenage Jayalalithaa romping around the farmlands and coconut trees, a privileged, city-educated child-woman returning to her village, bursting with confidence. The lines go: "Paarkum kangal paniya vendum; paavai ulagam madhikka vendum" (eyes that gaze at me should submit; a woman [who is] respected by the world).
The latter is a dream sequence, and the song captures the magic of falling in love and finding your life partner. The reigning screen goddess Jayalalithaa and the most romantic hero of his times, Gemini Ganesan, take this song to a different dimension.
Jumping backwards to one of her first songs as an adult in C.V. Sridhar's VenniraAadai , 'Enna Enna Vaarthaigalo,' — well nearly adult, because, I hear that she herself was not allowed to see the movie that was "adults only" in the 1960s — one is charmed. The song leaves an impression of someone very young and inexperienced trying to convince everyone that she has things under control.
It's easy when writing to catapult oneself and the reader forward in time, and that's what I will do — consider her last lead role in Tamil cinema, Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal.
There she is, casually doing stretches in a track suit and gracefully dancing with Sarath Babu to the catchy tune of Ilaiyaraaja's 'Thavikkudhu Thayangudhu Oru Manadhu'. There are two other unforgettable numbers in the film — Susheela's 'Engeyo Edho' and Jency's 'Poonthottam Poovil'.
One of the films I loved seeing her in was Yaar Nee? with Jaishankar. A remake ofWoh Kaun Thi?, this film had Jayalalithaa play dual roles — that of a ghost and an orphan girl. Some of the most melodious songs in Tamil cinema are those sung by ghost characters. Yaar Nee? had the "haunting"'Naane Varuven'.
There were one or two more remakes in which Jayalalithaa had some lovely roles. Vairam was one — it was a remake of Victoria No 203 with Saira Banu, and she played a carriage driver. The story revolves around a small bag of valuable diamonds left inside the lamp of the Victoria coach that Saira, in the Hindi, and Jaya, in the Tamil version, drive.
Another film that also has a Hindi parallel is Engirundho Vandhaal — this wasKhilona in Hindi with Sanjeev Kumar and Mumtaz. 'Sirippil Undagum Raagathiley', a beautiful song in this film, comes to mind, not just for its structure, tonality or lyrics, but for Jayalalithaa's laughter.
If I have to pick three of her songs with MGR, they will be 'Unnai Naan Santhithen' from Aayirathil Oruvan, and 'Aayiram Nilave Vaa' and 'Kaalathai Vendravan Nee' from Adimai Penn.
P. Susheela's 'Unnai Naan' is nothing short of captivating. 'Aayiram Nilave' was sung by Susheela and one of my favourite singers, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.
Jayalalithaa's strong, slightly nasal voice may not have suited the coy, lilting melodies rendered by singers in the 1960s, 1970s and even 1980s. But, she has also sung for a few films — 'Oh Meri Dilruba' from Suryakanthi with Muthuraman, and another in Thirumangalyam, with the same hero. 'Thirumangalyam Kollum Muraiyillaiyo' has an interesting depth and dimension to it.
From Sridhar's Vennira Aadai to B. Lenin's Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal,Jayalalithaa's career arc in Tamil cinema groomed her and let her develop to a point where she could call the shots. After Nadhiyai..., she did act in a few movies, but politics and public life took over, leaving little time for art.
Songs written for her, brought to life by her… those of which she is an inseparable part, lie at the foundation of my affection and admiration for her. And, perhaps, it is that way for you too.

Devi Namam for this Holy Happy Friday - Sri Lalitha Sahasranaamam - Nirmala
She who is personification of clarity or She who is devoid of any dirt.

She reminds us of the fact that all of us her own form. a burning splinter when left to rest will develop a film of ash over it. After a while the jeevan looks as if its extinguished and is ash. But when we start blowing air on it, the soot, ash flies off and starts glowing - as if its swayam prakaasa.

Devi is away from this outer cover of avidya or impurities like tamo gunam, aanava malam etc. so she is very pure and swayam prakAsa. meditating / contemplating on this nama will make us blow off the soot and ash covering our soul and make us swayam prakaasa, like her. like mother - like child. child carries all characteristicsm of other. all v need to do is try grow and evolve like her. one day our energy will merge with her energy, when we become that "Nirmalam" - devoid of the malams or mental impurities.
