New GM purple tomatoes tastier and longer-lasting.
Humble tomatoes can now be made both better-tasting and longer-lasting, thanks to a new research with purpose Genetically modified (GM) varieties. "Working with GM tomatoes that are different to normal fruit only by the addition of a specific compound allows us to point exactly how to breed in valuable traits," said professor Cathie Martin from the John Innes Centre. The research could also lead to GM varieties with better flavor, health and shelf life characteristics because even higher levels of the compound can be achieved.
(Me: We Indians would have none of it claiming what is found beneficial abroad will not be so in India, coz. we are still afflicted by the Monsanto bug/paranoia)

(Me: hmmm. One feels we are unduly gushing forth and basking in his glory. If he is appointed, the entire credit goes to the American system that rewards merit, and merit alone. Do we in India lay so much stress on a person's merit along for his elevation to a post, let alone 100% of people's representatives endorsing his candidature? Everything thing is given weightage here, other than the person's merit. For example, can Brahmin from State, with similar academic credentials ever hope to scale such heights in India?)

Wayanad police's fiat that auto drivers muss drop the mundu – sometimes lifted halfway up for comfort for khaki trousers, has auto unions up in arms. They have a point too.
