[www.keralites.net] Why are some countries richer than others?

In India we often ask the question why some countries  are richer than others, with the answer already in our mind such as blaming invaders for our poverty and crediting the high standards of some nations such as Britain and France to colonization of other countries. In the process we overlook the fact that 1. there are many nations which have not invaded other nations such as Finland, Switzerland, Korea, Singapore etc and which have had no colonies and yet are highly developed, and 2. poor countries like Nepal and Thailand which remain under-developed though they were never occupied or colonized by other nations.
Such prejudiced or jaundiced answers may be politically expedient in India. But they do more harm than good to the country. So a more balanced view of the state of affairs is needed if we are to get out of the quagmire of poverty we find ourselves in. Below is a presentation on why some countries are richer than others. You may not agree with all the answers given. But it is very much worth pondering over - Xavier William
