Doctor who hasn't used soap or shower gel in 20 YEARS claims we are TOO clean – and insists washing with detergents can damage the skin
· Dr George Moncrieff has been practising medicine for more than 30 years
· He appeared on This Morning to explain why he stopped using soap
· According to the GP detergent over-use of soap can destroy the skin 'barrier'
· Damages protective top layer of skin allowing allergens to enter
Dr George Moncrieff prefers to wash with emollients instead of soap as he believes, the detergents
in soap can cause damage with over-use
'It's really important that you don't let that wash over your skin. I think you should avoid detergents wherever possible because they damage the skin.'
He explained that the top layer of the skin acts as a barrier. Using detergents can weaken it and allow allergens to enter.
'The top layer of the skin, is a skin barrier. It prevents water escaping and it prevents pathogens from getting in, which is bacteria, but it also prevents allergens getting in.
