-Meet the Dubai Indian who helped dispatch Sridevi's body
While the only certainty in life is death, it is the uncertainty of how, when and where the angel of death strikes the living. While dying in a foreign land is in itself hard, it makes it doubly hard when the dead is orphaned.
Those that have had the misfortune of losing a family member in a foreign land know that it is not an easy task to move the mortal remains from one country to another. To undertake this daunting task of moving the dead body home from another country, the person who is dead should either be rich and famous or should have a family that loves him and wants to give a respectful end to the mortal remains.
Away from the cameras' flash and the eyes of her millions of fans in India, the actress Sridevi's body made its way to a simple mortuary in the United Arab Emirates, where one man helped sign out her remains to return home. Meet the Dubai Indian Mr. Ashraf who helped despatch Sridevi's mortal remains to India.
Listed only as "ASHRAF" on the official paperwork in Dubai , "Sherry" Thamarassery, a 44-year-old Indian from Kerala who has become a ferryman of sorts for those who die here in the United Arab Emirates.
Ashraf is known as the 'Friend of the Dead' in the UAE. From indebted laborers to the moneyed elite, Thamarassery has helped repatriate 4,700 bodies to 38 countries across the world during the past 18 years . He offers his service free of cost. He views it as a noble responsibility in this desert sheikhdom that draws so many far from their homes.
While Indian officials quickly canceled Sri Devi's passport and prepared the other documents, Thamarassery was arranging for a police clearance needed for her repatriation. When the clearance came, he traveled to a simple government-run mortuary in a dusty neighbourhood of squat, square buildings that house some of Dubai's immense population of foreign workers, many of whom come from South Asia.
There, officials embalmed her corpse as Thamarassery handled paperwork for her and three others. Ashraf , was among the few who were present at the embalming room. The embalming certificate issued by the Dubai Health Authority bears Ashraf's name.
An ambulance then carried her body to a private jet sent by an Indian billionaire Anil Ambani to take her home to Mumbai to be cremated.
Thamarassery runs a mechanics shop but focuses largely on his philanthropic efforts. He stays in a small apartment with his wife and daughter in Ajman, a small, dusty emirate in the UAE.
Shelf upon shelf in his home bears honors and awards. A framed picture hangs on the wall showing him meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"I do this to earn blessings, but also when someone dies here, people don't know how to manage the repatriation procedures. That's why I do it." he says
It warms the heart to see this selfless man toil day in day out moved by their compassion and sense of service to the nation and its people.
Ashraf, May your tribe increase and prosper!!! May our Mother India be blessed with many selfless sons like you!
But why was her mortal remains was wrapped with tri colour and cremated with state honours ?
Maharashtrian government decided to give complete state of honors to the legendary actress. In 2013, the legendary actress was honored with Padma Shri. It was the decision of state government itself to give a legendary farewell to the legendary actress.
In India, State funerals were initially reserved only for current and former Presidents, Prime Ministers, Union ministers and State Chief Ministers. And the decision to accord a state funeral rested initially with the union government. But laws have been changed such that the state government can now decide who will be given a state funeral, depending on the stature of the deceased. If the union government has decided for a state funeral then following procedures will be applied to all over India, else if the state government has declared a state funeral then it applies only to the state.
The government takes into consideration the contribution made by the person to the state in various fields like politics, literature, law, science and arts. The chief minister of the concerned state takes a decision after consultations with other cabinet ministers. Once a decision is taken on the issue, it is conveyed to senior police officials including the deputy commissioner, the police commissioner and the superintendent of police, who have to make all the arrangements for a state funeral.
But, does an actress who was drowned in a bath dub under the influence of alcohol, deserve such a state honour and national flag wrapping ?
What's your take? Please comment.
