A village in Uttar Pradesh has stolen the march over others when it comes to producing soldiers for the Indian Army. Locals say nearly 30 per cent of the youth from Atus - or more than 800 - is serving in the force.
The village, situated about 15 kilometres from Agra city, has a population of around 6,000.
'We also have over 200 retired army men here. The 'offensive' started in 2000 when a soldier of our village, Dashrath Singh, was killed by the Pakistan army.
'They took away his head and exploded a bomb on his body. Since then, our youths have developed a habit of joining the Army and fighting the Pakistanis,' Harvir Singh, a retired soldier, told Mail Today.
The village also has its own set of laws. And the punishments are unique too.
'Alcohol is banned in our village just to prevent youngsters from becoming physically and mentally weak. Anybody found drunk is penalised Rs 500 and anyone who gives information to the panchayat about an intoxicated person is rewarded with that amount.
'Not only this: the drunk person is publicly slapped in front of the panchayat to give a strong message to the youths,' Singh said. Nearly 60 km from Atus is Fatehabad village, which is also setting an example for others to emulate.
