Nowadays, plastic is pretty much everywhere and the non-biodegradable substance is killing millions of creatures on the planet. What most people dont realise is that a lot of oil is also being used to manufacture the vast amounts of plastic we use, causing further harm to the environment.
Here are some clever ways to cut down your use of plastic. Because seriously, its not fair that a fish has to die every time you go grocery shopping.
1. Say no to plastic straws.
This video of a turtle in pain because it has a straw stuck up its nose will make you regret ever using a straw!
2. Buy products that come in glass jars or cardboard packaging.
Instead of buying foods that come in plastic packaging, buy products that come in glass jars or cardboard packaging instead. Glass jars especially are super useful, since you can reuse them again and again.
3. Carry your own water with you.
Instead of buying a plastic bottle every time youre thirsty, make it a point to carry your own bottle with you.
4. Make your own juice.
Just imagine how many millions of plastic bottles are being thrown every day! Instead of buying soft drinks or juices, make your own juice at home and carry it around in a glass. It will probably be much healthier as well. Youre probably wondering why juice is on the list, since it comes in a cardboard box. Dont be fooled that cardboard is lined with plastic to prevent leakages!
5. Use reusable containers instead of cling film.
Instead of wrapping food in cling film that you will use once and throw away, opt for reusable containers instead. Carry your lunch in a steel box or a paper bag, whichever is easier.
6. Avoid buying yoghurt pods.
Instead of buying a small yoghurt and then throwing away the pod, make your own yoghurt at home! If thats not possible, then buy the larger sized containers, since it works out to less plastic overall.
7. Carry cloth bags when you go shopping.
Instead of loading up on tons of plastic bags, carry your own bags with you when you go shopping.
8. Stop using exfoliating scrubs and cleansers.
These products contain tiny plastic beads that are too small to get filtered out of the water. Fish mistake the microbeads for food and swallow them, and the result is not pretty.
9. Avoid disposable products.
Disposable razors, shampoo bottles, plates, cups, gloves and raincoats are all made of plastic. We use them once and throw them away, which is a colossal waste. Opt for longer lasting products, preferably ones that are not made of plastic.
10. Buy refills whenever possible.
Whether its pens, liquid soaps, oil, or any other product, opt for refills whenever possible. With pens for example, instead of throwing away the entire pen when youre done with it, you can keep the outer part and just replace the inner bit with a refill.
11. Switch to cloth diapers.
A baby requires approximately 3,500 diapers per year. Thats a lot of plastic! Switch to cloth diapers instead they can be washed and reused time and again, and are much better for your babys skin.
