As a privilege to have been born in human form, life offers us great opportunity to evolve through different phases; from childhood through old age. The stages of evolution in each phase can be different from person to person depending upon his sanchit (past) karma, his own intellectual and spiritual inclination and eagerness to find fundamental truths about life and its purpose. Our ancient scriptures very aptly segmented these phases, detailing in each phase, primary stage of required evolution and faculties that one shall acquire. Of course, it did not in any manner so rigidly stratify it, as to imply that the stated evolution was exclusive only to that phase of life. There were indeed some overlapping and concurrent stages of evolution. However, it did broadly lay down the evolution stages and critical faculties that were prerequisites of evolution in each phase.

Let us look at how our great sages and scriptures related the evolution to each phase in life recommending the faculties to be gained for maximum benefit and how they are still very much relevant.

Phases in Life:

1. Brahmacharyashram:

Each child learns from its parent and the environment some basic skills naturally. These skills in most primary form are speech, reading, communication, computing and identifying objects, understanding different phenomenon. Gradually, they transcend to acquired skills in any chosen field as per the ability of an individual student. This is what we call as "Education", an evolution important in this phase. Education is not just study of the curriculum but developing ability to learn from the environment one lives in and adapt one's life and thinking to suit it. It is something which will be best termed as "knowledge". Best part of this is that for every generation it keeps evolving and is never static. This is how the civilization evolves. Those who sincerely pursue this stage of evolution in their phase of Brahmacharyashram will have easy transition to the next stage.

2. Gruhasthashram:

Equipped with first stage of evolution required to face life, when a child enters working life, it is saddled with new kind of challenges. These challenges can be varied; from managing interpersonal relationships to effectively putting the education attained to use in practical terms. This is the phase of life when one is expected to transform skill/education into experience that is going to determine success or failure in terms of measure he has set for himself. Hence, it is a stage of evolution that is a key to satisfaction in terms of ambition and material gains. Those who aim for excellence in whatever they do with complete dedication will evolve to a level of competence that will be a pillar of strength in subsequent phases of life. It is the competence that brings expertise. Competence is an ability to proactively foresee an issue, envisage a solution in given resources, implement and demonstrate results. Solution may not be the best but the competence level gained from experience will help develop expertise to give confidence in life. There is a danger that one needs to guard against though. If the years of experience is not backed by an open mind then there is a possibility that innovation will stop and experience will not transcend to a stage of expertise which is an important stage in evolution cycle in this phase.

3. Vanasprasthashram:

This is the phase when one needs to evolve to a stage, when one can mentor people, train the next generation helping them to integrate their newer and more recent skills with one's own experience gained during the years of Gruhasthashram. -Hand over all responsibilities and detach from day today rigours is the dictum one follows for happiness in this phase. In olden days people were not able to share experiences even across 100 miles. So they moved around in this phase in the country to exchange and share experiences with far off people. However, with world becoming smaller in today's times with several communication channels, this has been rendered unnecessary. Positive mentoring to people who are part of your life could bring a lot of acknowledgement and appreciation in one's life with enhanced respect. Many fail to evolve to this stage under a mistaken notion that sharing experience and training others will threaten their position and security. It is actually on the contrarary.

4. Sanyasashram:

These are the last years of life where one needs to evolve to a stage when one can repay to the society what has been gained. Those who are more evolved souls do so right from their Gruhasthashram phase. However, this is an opportunity that almighty provides one and all reaching this phase in life, to contribute to the good for the society. This phase can be most fulfilling if one decides to just give back. Be it wealth, be it knowledge, or be it a dedicated service to the mankind. Purpose of life has best chance of being fulfilled for normal beings, through this stage of evolution in journey of life.

In order to make the life meaningful and process of transition smoother there is a tool that always helps. This tool is "Introspection". It enables one to take objective view of the matter and pushes to evolve better by proper planning and a empathetic paradigm shift.

There is a simple exercise for introspection which can be a great help. It is explained below.

a) While going home after working hours, try to jot down how you spent 8 hours. Many will not be able to account for 8 hours.

b) After a few days you may not be happy about the way you spend your time.

c) More you introspect more you will evolve to start planning the day and try to make the most out of it.

d) Higher percentage of compliance and results will give you complete satisfaction. The happiness will be immense because you could achieve the desired level of evolution.

e) A stage will come, when you will start innovative thinking and move towards expertise. You will set stretched measurable targets, start demanding more from yourself. That is the time when your evolution will mature to a higher stage, and you will experience bliss and power of belief.

The process looks simple, but will help in working for a purpose in life to make it meaningful and enjoyable with small victories at regular intervals.

Thus a complete life cycle is the right evolution in terms of knowledge, experience, expertise, mentoring of "generation next" and repayment to the society. This brings wholeness to the life and realization that we are complete and that life is a journey of evolution and not an end object.

After all, it is our journey of life.
