Desi remedy has arthritic ITBP dog up and running
Having conducted a successful experiment, he now hopes the government will take it forward and expand the scope of the experiment to establish a durable formula.
Commandant Sudhakar Natarajan, a vet with ITBP for the past 23 years, claims that when all treatment failed on a dog afflicted with osteoarthritis, he gave it a daily dose of half spoon of turmeric, one-fourth spoon of pepper and half spoon of refined oil over ten months. The dog is up and running now and able to perform all duties required by the force.
According to ITBP, its 10-year-old sniffer dog Kelly (a Labrador) went out of operation about a year ago after it began suffering severe osteoarthritis. The dog's condition was so bad that it was unable to even move and would constantly moan. "Such dogs are either put to sleep or put on heavy dose of painkillers and other drugs leading to kidney and liver failure in the long run. We had nothing to lose so I thought of conducting an experiment that I had learnt from my parents and grandparents. It worked wonders," Natarajan says.
Kelly began showing signs of osteoarthritis during a vet health examination on May 5, 2014. "Anti-arthritic drugs presently available in the Indian market are not effective in all cases of age-related onset of osteoarthritis in dogs," says Natarajan.
That's when Natarajan decided to harness the "well known anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric (haldi) and its synergistic action with pepper". "Pepper is known to potentiate the properties of curcumin (active ingredient of haldi) by more than 200 times," says Natarajan.
On May 5, 2014, Natarajan initiated treatment by taking half spoon of freshly ground turmeric, mixing it with one-fourth spoon of fresh pepper powder and one spoon of refined oil. "The mixture was mixed with half cup water and microwaved for 30 seconds before being poured over the dog feed every morning at 6 am for the next 9-10 months," says Natarajan.
After three months of continuous treatment, Kelly showed marked improvement in its walking and all major joints were pain-free, claims Natarajan. "In April this year, after nearly one year of the treatment, a miracle was witnessed. Kelly ran behind the ball and caught it," says Natarajan, who has decided to keep the dog on the treatment for the rest of her life.
Natarajan, however, says his claims require further scientific substantiation. "The experiment should be conducted on large scale now. I am hoping that this government will be favourably disposed to such a thing. I salute the time tested wisdom of Ayurveda that had discovered the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics action of turmeric and its synergistic union with pepper," he said.
