End Bribing of Doctors by Pharmaceutical Firms : - Many pharmaceutical firms test their new medicines on Indian patients without taking them into confidence, in wanton violation of international norms. The culprits are the doctors who are tempted with money, gifts and air tickets and hotel accommodation to attend conferences abroad, organised by such firms. In the US, all pharmaceutical firms have been asked to disclose the payments made to doctors. India can also make it obligatory for drug firms to publish details of such payments on their websites. Since it is a global problem, the Department of Pharmaceuticals could exchange notes with regulators in other countries to fix the problem.
With the arrival of magnetic resonance imaging facilities even in small towns, doctors prescribe MRI tests on each of which they get a commission of `3000 or more. Doctors are also known for their indiscriminate prescription of antibiotics. As a result, a large number of patients have become immune to antibiotics, forcing doctors to prescribe stronger and stronger antibiotics.
Medical firms use inducements of all kinds to force doctors to prescribe medicines and services without any check whatsoever.
