[www.keralites.net] khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 13/7/13

"Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination" - John Dewey.

(Me: Yep, absolutely, Jo Darr Gaya, Woh Mar gaya! Only risk-takers make it BIG)

Weird world…

To plug computer leaks, Kremlin brings back typewriters!

A Russian state service in charge of safeguarding Kremlin communication is looking to purchase an array of old-fashioned typewriters to prevent leaks from computer hardware. The throwback to the paper-strewn days of Soviet bureaucracy has reportedly been prompted by the publication of secret documents by anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks and revelations leaked by former US intelligence contractor, Snowden.

Not so praise-worthy a trait…

75% of Indians choose to ignore crash victims: survey.

New Delhi: Some 74% Indians are unlikely to help victims of road accidents due to fears of legal hassles and police questioning: a survey of1027 people in seven cities showed Thursday, while the figure jumped to 96% in New Delhi.

(Report courtesy: Mumbai Mirror 12/7/13)

(Me: An unfortunate outcome is, most often the accident victims are left to die. Furthermore, since the ordinary citizens, scared of the legal hassles of being asked to making rounds to police stations and law courts frequently, who are witnesses to accidents or other crimes do not come forward to give evidence, the police have no option but to retain the services of paid, pro witnesses and their testimony/evidences are often shred to pieces under intensive cross-examination by defence lawyers. And no wonder, the conviction rate even in serious cases in most states is in single digits…)

'Dead' candidate elected in South Mexico village..

Mexico city Prosecutors are investigating how a man certified as dead got elected mayor of a village in southern Medico. Authorities say relatives of Lenin Carballido used a dead certificate showing that he died of a diabetic coma in 2010 to convince police to drop an arrest warrant against him for allegedly participating in a 2004 gang rape. A living Carballido later rain in, and narrowly won, last week's election in San Agustin Amatengo. Officials said that the death certificate had been drawn up and signed by a public registry official, but that the information had been faked.

Line Maro

I could offer you a drink, but I'd be jealous of the glass.

(Me: And once it is all over and she becomes well and truly your partner, you would gladly want to remain drunk perpetually..).

Pun fun…

Gravity always gets me down..

World of science…

Have yogurt when you have diarrhea or an upset stomach. It helps by promoting the growth of good bacteria in the gut.

**

Almonds are a rich source of Vitamin E and help reduce cholesterol..

Sad music evokes positive emotions..

The researchers from Japan found that said music evoked contradictory emotions because the people tended to feel sad music to be more tragic, less romantic, and less blithe than they felt themselves while listening to it.

**

Extreme or sudden emotional trauma can lead to 'broken heart syndrome' (BHS), or stress cardiomyopathy (severe heart muscle weakness). This condition occurs rapidly, and usually in women.

Some weird causes for marriage break-ups in the West…

A couple fought over a pencil cup in the kitchen.

One couple fought over a lawn=mower that neither of them needed and which ended up being recycles.

One fought over a custom plaid chair, whose fabric got torn while it was being moved.

One over his Rambo movie.

One over a Crystal Molton Brown soap holder.

One over who got to keep the Christmas tree and decorations.

**

During a robbery, one of the robbers' mask slid down. He looked at a man and asked, "Did you see my face?"

The man said, "Yes!".

The robber shot him. Then he asked a woman, "Did you see my face?"

She said, "No, but my husband over there did."

News of the day…

13 Mumbai city policemen sentenced to life in prison for fake encounter killing.

(hmmm. Tough to make a definite comment, one way or the other.
In the 1980s and 90s, extreme lawlessness prevailed in the city and the law-enforcement machinery was found wanting, and one dare not spell out the reasons, and the citydwellers wanted to end to notorious criminal gangs operating with impunity. The encounters – real or fake – did bring peace to the city and the citizens heaved huge sigh of relief. One could be excused if one doubts that opening the old cases and damning the cops is the right thing to do…)

Chetan Bhagat's damningly sarcastic piece on Food Security in the Time of India, 13/7/13.

Please, am neither pro nor anti Chetan Bhagat and haven't read any his hugely popular fiction – of course, hv seen his mega hit film version of his 3 Idiots.

He proposes a better bill and asks, why just two-thirds of India, let's extend free grains to the entire country. Moreover, why not some vegetables and fruit, and fresh milk, too, for every Indian family must get grain, fruit, vegetables, mill and whatever else it takes to have a healthy balanced diet and it should be free! And some nuts for all Indians – and you know the kind of nuts I am talking about, right?

(Those who get the TOI at home, read the article fully, plz..)
