[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 30/5/13

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

"Someplace at the heart of most compelling stories is something that doesn't make sense" – Richard Ford

(Me: One would go to the extent of saying that stories are all fiction and more often don't reflect the realities)

**
"Do one thing every day that scares you" – Eleanor Roosevelt.

You're so beautiful that you made me forget my pickupline

(Me: So, pick me not..)

From the world of science…

Is there an easy way of predicting longevity?

Brazilian researchers have discovered a rather bizarre yet simple way of predicting life span. They found that those who needed the most help going from a standing to a sitting position, then back to a standing position were the most likely to die within5 years.

(Me: try it out. Haha.)

Seasame seeds are rich in antioxidants that help ward off chronic diseases and the effects of ageing.

Brushing your teeth shortly after dinner can distract your brain and mouth and help outsmart your dessert craving.

New vaccine protects kids against hand, foot and mouth disease.

Chinese scientists have developed the first vaccine to protect children against a virus called enterovirus 71, or EV71, that causes the common and sometimes deadly hand, foot and mouth disease. The new vaccine was developed for use in the Asia-Pacific, which accounts for most of the serious cases.

New paper will lead to cheap medical devices. US researchers have created a new type of paper that repels liquids, including water and oil; work could lead to new generation of biomedical diagnostics devices.

Weird world…

Afghan man had a pencil in head for 15 years.

Berlin: Doctors say a man spent 15 years with a pencil in his head following a childhood accident. Aachen University Hospital says the 24-year-old man from Afghanistan sought help in 2011 after suffering for years from headaches, colds and worsening vision in one eye. A scan showed that a 10-centimetre pencil was lodged near his pharynx and had injured his right eye socket. Doctors removed the pencil.

One woman to another: "I promised to love and honor, but I bought him a dog for the obey part."

A young and foolish pilot was at the controls, and it was his first night landing. He wanted to sound cool on the aviation frequencies. So, instead of making an official request to the tower, he said: "Guess who?"

The controller switched the field lights off and replied: "Guess where?"

Pun fun…

"How could Lakshmi Mittal sell his London mansion? He had to steel himself" – Bachi Karkaria..

(Me: hmmm. I remember he bought the artdeco palace over a decade ago amid much fanfare, when he was the richest in the UK.. According to reports, he is selling it for about 110mn pounds, a cool 6 million pounds less than we had paid for it).

Much ado about nothing…

India world's 3rd largest economy?

The Indian economy has probably recently surpassed Japan to become the third largest economy globally, in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)

(Me: Big deal! Japan's population is just 1/10th of ours. This is why I always maintain statistical information is a useless barometer as it can be, by selectively using it, employed to prove any point under discussion. The other more damaging news is, India's total population stood at 36 crores (360 million) at Independence whereas our current BPL (Below Poverty Line) population is 40 crores (400 million). The conclusion is inescapable: the fruits flowing out of the game-changing budget of the early 1990s have gone into the pocket of a fraction of 1% of population, with a few thousand people becoming millionaires and 50 or so, billionaires). The reason for the runaway population growth is simple: the party that gets to rule is elected by the illiterate masses, so it takes or implements only populist programmes when the country desperately needed strong measures like compulsory family planning e.g. sterilization to curb the numbers from getting out of hand. While one-third of our population is BPL, a further 1/3rd also need food subsidy as per a study undertaken for the Food Security Plan. The trillion dollar question is, where will the resources come from to feed such humungus numbers of people, except by way of increased taxes from u and me?)
