Car Pooling: A step to Reduce Traffic Congestion

and Pollution

Governments  are growing worried that they face a mounting threat from global warming. Well, that, of course, has been a cause of worry for many, even in the city.
Fun & Info @ Keralites.netCar pooling can help a lot to decrease traffic congestion

But now the authorities say that the past few months have been quite productive, both for the environment-friendly people, and the Bangalore Traffic Police. Why? Car pooling. Better late than never; the much talked-about concept, car pooling, is now been encouraged by many in the city, and a lot of the Bangaloreans have actually taken up the concept in a more serious note. Priya Rai, a techie who travels to the Electronic City everyday, explains, I wasn't very aware of the car pooling concept in the city. It was through one of my colleagues that I got to know about few agencies that offer services on this. She added, Ever since then, I have been sharing a car with others to commute. It's, she said, also a great way to know more people, and I have made a lot of new friends.

Today, there is a surplus of vehicles, moving onto the city roads everydat. In fact, according to the latest statistics, Bangalore shows to have achieved the credit of becoming the second city to have the highest number of vehicles, next only to Delhi (4.9 million). I have my office at Marathalli, but it takes not less than two hours for me to travel from Jayanagar, the place where I live in. There is always a huge traffic jam, some where on the road, which takes a lot of time to be cleared, said Mehajabeen, a software engineer. She added, It's a daily affair for me, and I feel so helpless about it.

Asked on what she thought about car pooling, she replied, It's a great idea, and it will definitely help to decrease the traffic congestion, especially in this routes where you have all these M.N.C.'s. Mehajabeen, who is new to the city, and is still to own a car is

Looking for people whom she can share a car with, but says that people should change their attitude towards car pooling. A lot of the people don't want to share car, or go with somebody else because it looks more like a prestige-issue to them. People, she says, should see what the world has come to, and this is no time to look for one's prestige.

Rising number of vehicles on road have contributed a lot to pollution too. Dr. Sudhindra D., Practitioner and Consultant Physician, corroborates, We get patients suffering bronchitis and respiratory problems day in and day out. He added, Air Pollution is vastly responsible for this. People should cut down on the usages of their vehicles. For Dr. Sudhindra, car pooling, he thought, could actually bring down the amount of pollution to a large extent. He said, People should be educated more on this. It's a great idea, and if people actually start doing it, it can bring down the pollution to a large extent.

Needless to say, technology plays a vital role here too. Websites like
commuteeasy.com' and car pooling.in' make it easy for people to get in touch with like other like minded people. And now, even the traffic police seem to be encouraging Bangaloreans to opt for it, which obviously seems to have worked well with a lot of Bangaloreans. Bangalore Traffic Police have actually taken the initiative to work with agencies likecommuteeasy.com to make people aware, and encourage them to opt for car pooling.

Mohammed Sajjad Khan, Inspector (Adminstration), Bangalore Traffic Police, corroborates: We have partnered with an F.M. Station and commuteeasy.com to encourage people to opt for car pooling, which if works out well, can actually bring down the traffic congestion to a large extent in the city. He added, We have also put up hoardings and presentations in multiplexes about car pooling. He concludes by saying, People are now more educated about this, and a lot of them have taken up car pooling. It, after all, doesn't look like that bad an idea, does it? We have been working on this avidly for the last four months, and now we see that there has actually been quite an improvement in the issue of traffic congestion in the city, said Mr. Khan.

Car-pooling, which means sharing of rides in a private vehicle among two or more individuals has actually been very successful to decrease the traffic congestion in cities like Delhi, where the system already prevails. It involves the use of one person's private or company vehicle to carry one or more fellow passengers.
