The Difference Between Green and Black Tea

Whats the difference between green and black tea? Isnt it all just tea from the same plant?
tea

Both black and green tea is harvested from an evergreen, tree-like shrub known as camellia sinensis. Most likely originating in China, the camellia sinensis is thought to have first been used to brew a medicinal elixir during the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC to 1046 BC). By the Qin Dynasty in the third century BC, it had become a relatively popular drink using only the leaves from this plant, rather than mixed with other things as seems to have been common when used medicinally.
As for the plant itself, camellia sinensis can grow as tall as 30 ft if left untended, but is generally kept significantly shorter, usually only 3-6 ft tall, to make it easier to harvest the buds and leaves. It is those that are then processed to become green or black tea, among other types.
The difference between these teas is achieved via different processing methods. Manufacturers create green tea by picking the leaves off the plant and then heating them immediately afterwards. This is commonly done by pan firing the leaves or steaming them. Sufficient heat stops the leaves from oxidizing, allowing them to maintain their green color.
Leaves that are going to be used for black tea are allowed to ferment, or oxidize, completely. The general process here is to roll, tear, or crush the leaves to help along the oxidation process (similar to why the inside of an apple turns brown when you expose it to air). The leaves are then dried out, sometimes in the Sun or otherwise using machines. As the leaves oxidize, they gradually turn from green to black.
Other common types of tea include white and oolong.  Oolong is initially generally processed in the same way as black tea, but isnt allowed to oxidize for as long.  Once the desired oxidation level has been reached, which varies quite a bit by type and manufacturer (some oolong tea is closer to green tea, while others is closer to black in oxidation levels), the leaves are fired similar to green tea to stop the oxidation process at that point.
White tea is made by picking the leaves and buds early in the year while the bud is still closed.  From here, the leaves may be placed out to dry in the Sun or may be dried out in some other fashion, in either case attempting to minimize oxidation during this process.
  • Contrary to what you might think, the highest tea consumption per capita is not found in the United Kingdom, but rather Turkey at 7.682 kg per person per year.  The U.K. rings in at number 5, and has actually been on the decline of late, with a 6% drop in tea sales in the last year alone in the U.K., which has only continued the recent trend. On the flipside, coffee sales are rising in the U.K. at about the same rate as the tea sales are falling annually.
  • Americans overwhelming preferred black tea to green, with 84% of the tea consumed being of the black variety and 14% green.
  • It is thought that tea arrived in Europe as a result of Portugals trading privileges with China. A Jesuit priest by the name of Jasper de Cruz is often credited with being the first to bring tea back to Portugal with him after visiting China in 1590.
  • Tea drinking didnt become common in Britain until around the 18th century, when tea smuggling became big business in that country.  Previous to this, the taxes on tea tended to make it unaffordable to lower class citizens as something regularly consumed.

8 Diabetic Diet Myths Dispelled

Diabetes is fast becoming one of the most common illnesses in the world. As such, there is a treasure trove of rumors and misinformation regarding this disease. It's extremely important to separate fact from fiction, and that is why we've brought you 8 of the most common myths about this disease that we are going to bust right now.
Myth 1: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes
It is widely thought that eating too much sugar causes diabetes. What does cause diabetes is an insulin malfunction . This means your body struggles to turn the food you eat into energy. Usually food gets broken down into glucose, a sugar that powers cells. The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone which helps cells use glucose for energy.
There are 3 common forms of diabetes and none of them are caused by sugar intake.
  • Type 1 diabetes usually starts in childhood or young adulthood and is when the pancreas can't produce insulin. These people need to take insulin to help move the sugar into the cells and prevent it from amassing in the blood.
  • Type 2 diabetes can affect any person, of any age and is when the pancreas doesn't produce sufficient insulin or the insulin stops working, and sometimes both scenarios. Being overweight can make this form of diabetes more likely.
  • Another common type is Gestational diabetes, a temporary form of diabetes that occurs in pregnancy due to hormone changes that cause insulin not to work properly.
Myth 2: You won't be able to eat your favorite foods anymore
The idea that you are limited to uninteresting food when you are diabetic is widespread and misleading. You don't have to give up foods you love; you just might need to think of how you eat them differently. You will need to change the way you prepare these foods, and might need to change the foods that you eat alongside them, and possibly reducing the portions.
Myth 3: You'll have to prepare separate diabetic meals
You might be thinking that you won't be able to eat what the rest of the family is eating, and extra preparation would be required. This isn't necessarily true. A diabetic diet is a healthy diet, nutritious for the whole family and doesn't require separate preparation. The person with diabetes just needs to pay more attention to the amount of calories she or he eats and monitor the types of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in their diet.
Alternative sugars
Stevia
  • This is a plant extract that tastes much sweeter than sugar and has no calories. It has the added benefit of lowering blood sugar and blood pressure. Stevia has a distinct taste and it can take a while to adjust.
Erythritol
  • This sugar alcohol is low in calories and doesn't affect your blood sugar levels. It is safe to eat however eating too much can cause digestion issues.
Xylitol
  • Another sugar alcohol that doesn't raise blood sugar or insulin levels. Similar to Erythritol, Xylitol causes digestive issues if eaten in large quantities. This sugar alcohol is also been shown to have dental benefits and improve bone density. It's highly toxic to dogs.

Myth 4: Carbohydrates are bad for diabetics
Carbohydrates, commonly shortened to carbs, are the foundation of any healthy diet and are not bad for diabetes. Why they are important to monitor is because they have the greatest effect on blood sugar levels. It's best to discuss which ones you eat with a dietician so that you select nutrient rich ones.
Myth 5: You can replace carbohydrates with protein
Carbohydrates ability to affect blood sugar levels quickly might tempt people with diabetes to lower their intake of carbs and compensate with more protein. This is fine in principle, but in practice many proteins, such as meat, are dense in saturated fats. Consuming too much fat can increase the risk for heart disease.
Myth 6: You can take medicine and eat what you like
It would be great if taking a pill would allow you to go about eating what you usually do but adjusting your medication makes it less effective as medicine works best taken consistently, as instructed by your physician. For those who take insulin, it's often the case that you learn to adjust the amount of insulin to match the amount of food you eat, but this doesn't give you permission to eat as much as you want. You still have to stick to a diabetic diet to stabilize your blood sugar levels.

Myth 7: You have to eat diet foods
A lot of 'diet' foods are smart marketing. They are often more expensive and no healthier than regular foods. It's important to read the ingredients and consider the number of calories before deciding if it's suitable for your diabetic diet. As always when in doubt about what food is beneficial its best to consult with a nutritionist or dietician.
Myth 8: No more dessert
Similar to myth #2 you need to rethink how you look at desserts. There are plenty sweet options available for eating at the end of a meal. You can use artificial sweeteners, alternative sugars or try expanding your food horizons to include fruit, and yogurts. You can even make your recipes more nutritious by including whole grains, and vegetable oil when preparing desserts. For many recipes you can skip or reduce the sugar without changing the consistency or sacrificing the taste. Another option is to practice portion control. Consider splitting dessert or opting for a single ice cream scoop.

Some Facts on Blood Donation

An adult has about 5 liters of blood in the body.
Typically, about 300 ml (anywhere between 200 and 450 ml) of blood is taken by a blood bank (depending on requirement) from a person.
The blood donated is recouped by the body within 2 to 7 days.
One unit of blood (about 450 ml) helps save 3 lives.
This is because, the blood taken from a donor is separated into its components (Red cells, White cells, Plasma and Platelets), each of which can be transfused into the blood of a recipient, separately.
It takes approximately 10 minutes to remove one unit of blood from the donor . Including the time taken for filling up a form prior to donation, a physical examination (BP and weight) of the donor and the time to relax after donating blood, the whole process can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour.
The blood removed from the donor is tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, Malaria parasite and blood group. In other words, persons affected with diabetes and taking medicines to keep diabetes under control can also donate blood.

Whenever you donate blood, you will be removing excess cholesterol accumulated in the blood, thus reducing the chance of heart attack.
Take some biscuits / cake and coffee / tea / fruit juice, after donating blood and sit (lie down if you feel giddy) for about 5 to 10 minutes.
The donor can resume regular activities after about 30 minutes of donating blood. Avoid the following:
Climbing stairs within 30 minutes
Smoking

Every year, our nation requires about 4 crore units of blood while availability is 40 Lac units (estimates differ - another info states that requirement is 90 Lac units and availability is 40 Lac units; all the same, there is a definite shortage of blood in the country for saving lives) Donating blood is a safe process - a fresh needle is used for each person and there is no fear of contracting any disease. The no 1 reason given by donors to donate blood is "I want to help others". The two major reasons for a person not donating blood is "Never thought about it" and "I don't like needles" Persons from the age of 18 to the age of 60 can donate blood, except when they are affected with HIV +ve, cancer, Hepatitis B or C (within the previous 3 years), seizures, syphilis, and women during their menstruating cycle.

[www.keralites.net] : 4 WAYS TO TREAT DENGUE AT HOME

4 Ways To Treat Dengue At Home

dengue
Summer is back! And so are mosquitoes.
My friend is a marketing professional who has to travel frequently within India and abroad. He had fever a few days back and popped regular medicines to treat it. A couple of days later when the body temperature did not lower, he got the tests done as advised by a physician. It turned out to be a case of dengue! He was immediately hospitalized and given the required treatment that saved his life.
My point is that if you have fever due to dengue, you are most likely to pass it off as common flu at first. If not diagnosed in time dengue can prove to be fatal. So, let us explore the symptoms of dengue and ways to prevent and treat it:
How do you know its dengue?
Some of the most visible symptoms of dengue are as follows:
  1. Sudden and high grade fever
  2. Severe pain in joints and muscles in the body
  3. Severe headache, abdominal pain and pain behind the eyes
  4. Nausea and vomiting after eating food
  5. Measles like rashes and mild bleeding (like nose or gum bleed)
  6. Low levels of blood platelets
  7. Lethargy and feeling of restlessness
If these symptoms are not treated in time, it may prove fatal. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is an unknown complication to many. It may cause high fever, nasal bleeding, gum bleeding, damage to blood vessels, enlargement of liver and failure of the circulatory system. It causes Dengue Shock Syndrome or severe bleeding, shock and eventually death.
If one has a weak immunity or has suffered from dengue before, then they are at a larger risk for getting dengue hemorrhagic fever. So take care!
How do you get dengue?
Dengue is a viral infection that occurs in your body when a female Aedes Aegypti mosquito infected with the dengue virus bites you. There are 4 types of dengue viruses, namely, DEN1, DEN2, DEN 3 and DEN 4. The symptoms of dengue occur within 3-14 days of the infective mosquito bite. It can afflict the young and the old alike. Its symptoms are milder in young children as compared to older children and adults. Dengue mostly occurs in the tropical areas where the mosquito breeds easily due to weather conditions.
Ways to treat Dengue:
Your doctor will advise microbiological laboratory tests for diagnosing the dengue infection. There are no specific medicines for treating dengue. Avoid medicines with aspirin which may enhance bleeding. You need to see your doctor immediately for treatment. The treatment is symptomatic in the case of dengue.
The blood platelet count goes down drastically that may lead to Dengue Shock Syndrome. To boost up the platelet count, here are some effective Ayurvedic remedies which may go along with Allopathic medication:
  1. Juice of pomegranate or wheatgrass. It helps boost the haemoglobin levels and raises the immunity to fight the infection.. If wheatgrass is not available the patient can be given apple juice as well.
  2. Give 30 ml juice of crushed papaya leaves 2-3 times a day to the dengue patient. The platelet count will start increasing immediately after the first dose.
  3. Give Giloy extract 2-3 times a day to the patient to raise the immunity and boost the platelet count.
  4. To counter the nausea and vomiting, give apple juice mixed with half a tablespoon lemon juice to the patient.
Have enough freshly prepared warm food and take rest. Drink plenty of fluids to maintain the fluid balance.
Apart from the above supplementary remedies, make sure the patient gets a lot of rest and nutritious diet. Without proper rest and diet, the medicines will not have desired effect.
How you can prevent Dengue?
There is no vaccine to prevent dengue infection. However, the best you can do is to avoid getting bitten by the mosquitoes by destroying their breeding grounds and spraying mosquito repellents.
You may also take the following precautions:
  1. Avoid living in densely populated areas to cut down the probability of infection.
  2. Use mosquito repellents indoor as well as outdoors.
  3. When going outside, wear clothes covering the maximum area of your body.
  4. Drain out clogged water in tanks, pots etc. that may potentially breed mosquitoes.
  5. Use air conditioner at home to prevent humid conditions that breed mosquitoes.
  6. If any family member gets dengue, make sure the rest of the family is protected from mosquitoes.
  7. Seek medical when you develop fever and other dengue symptoms.
Prevention, after all, is the best cure in case of dengue fever. Don't you agree?

Helpful Answers From Granny

As we were walking by the local park, we saw granny sitting with a friend, and thought it would be the perfect time to ask her advice about some daily problems we've been having around the house!
"Granny! Our kitchen has been invaded by the nearest ant nest!"
advice from granny

Granny says: 'Ants hate cucumbers. Find the ant hole and leave cucumber skin next to it, they won't poke their little heads out!'

"Granny! Our ice always comes out 'foggy' and opaque, how can we make nice clear ice?"

advice from granny

Granny says: 'If you want clear ice, just boil the water before you freeze them and keep them isolated, it's the other particles in the water that makes it look dirty.'

"Granny! I got chewing gum stuck on my favorite shirt and I can't get it off!"
advice from granny

Granny Says: 'If you have chewing gum stuck to your clothes, put them in the freezer for about an hour. Then you should be able to simply remove the frozen chewing gum by hand.'

Granny next to her: 'Sorry to cut in, but tell them they can also smear a tiny bit of peanut butter on it and let it sit. The fat in the butter will cause the chewing gum to love its hold.'

"Granny! We have unwanted guests in the house - rats!"

advice from granny

Granny says: 'Spill some black pepper where ever you find mice or rats, they'll take one sniff and head for the hills!'

"Granny! My hair has lost its luster and spark!"

advice from granny

Granny says: 'If you want luster in your hair (personally I prefer distinguished grey hair), add a spoon of vinegar and then wash really well. The luster and shine will reappear!'

"Granny! I can never squeeze all the juice out of lemons, there's always more left over."

advice from granny

Granny says: 'Soak the lemons in hot water for one hour, and then you'll easily squeeze out all the juice.'
"Granny! Remember that shirt I stuck my chewing gum to? Well now I spilt ink on on it!"
advice from granny

Granny (rolling her eyes) says: 'Get some toothpaste and rub it on the ink stains. Then let it completely dry and take it to the wash. If you acted fast enough, you just may get a clean shirt back.'

"Granny! How can I stop my eyes from watering while I cut onions?"

advice from granny

Granny says: 'There are several ways. First you can cut the onions under cool water, and suprisingly, chewing gum while cutting will sometimes lower the need for tears.

Granny next to her: 'Sorry but I'd like to add that you can also light a candle near the cutting board, the fire burns the gases that cause your eyes to water.

"Granny! Every time we clean the mirror, we leave obvious marks on it. How to make it completely clean?"

advice from granny

Granny says: 'To clean the mirror so it will look new and shiny, clean first with regular cleaning material to remove the dirt and dust layers. Then mix a glass of vinegar with a quarter cup of water and use some newspaper to gently clean the mirror. After that go over that wet area with a fresh and dry newspaper. The mirror will look as new.

"Granny! I don't have much time and I'm hungry, how can I boil potatos faster?"
advice from granny

Granny Says: 'Peel one side of each potato before you boil them, and they'll be ready much faster.'

Granny next to her: 'Sorry again, but I'd like to add a little tip - to keep peeled potatos in their fresh white color, soak them in cold water and add a few drops of vinegar before putting in the fridge.

Granny says: 'Sorry and sorry again! Maybe enough butting in? They're asking me!'

Granny next to her: 'Sorry.'

"Granny! It takes too long to peel sweet potatos!"
advice from granny

Granny says: 'Boil them, and then immediately soak in cold water for a few minutes. The peeling will be much easier.'
'Now if you don't mind, you've tired me out with all your questions. I'm going home to make some food, and you've just reminded me my mirror is still dirty, thanks a bunch!'
