Fruit and Vegetables May Help Fight Depression

Clinical depression is a mental health condition that affects moods, thoughts and behaviour. Common symptoms include elongated bouts of sadness or lack of purpose, lack of motivation to do things you normally like to do, moodiness, irritability, frustration, spending less time with friends and family, sleep disturbances, fatigue, aches and pains, slowing down of thoughts and actions and uncontrollable crying. Depression is one of the most common mental health illnesses. In Australia on average, one in six people will experience depression in their lifetime.

When you're struggling with depressive symptoms, maintaining good eating habits can be difficult; this is the time when many people will reach for the comfort foods that are high in refined, processed sugar, refined carbohydrates and fat. These foods will contribute to fatigue, further aggravate poor mood and cause irregular blood sugar levels, this will then increase your cravings for more junk food and you will be more likely to reach for quick pick-me-up foods and the pattern continues.

A recent study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry reported that individuals eating a diet rich in whole foods were less likely to report feelings of depression than those who ate lots of desserts, fried foods, processed meats, refined grains and high-fat dairy products. After 5 years, the study determined that a processed food dietary eating pattern is a risk factor for depression, whereas a whole food eating pattern is a protective measure for depression.

The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a diet with high intakes of fruits and vegetables was associated with fewer depressive symptoms. The study contributed these results to a cumulative effort of the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables as well as the omega-3 fatty acids in fish.

Another interesting fact, a person suffering with depression can show high blood levels of homocysteine, this amino acid can interfere with depression recovery and it is also endangers the heart. Folic acid helps minimize homocysteine levels, so eating enough folate rich foods may have an antidepressant effect. When a person is low in folate they can have an increased risk of depression, insomnia and mental fatigue. To get enough folic acid, eat or drink raw dark, green leafy and colourful vegetables and include nuts, seeds, sprouts and legumes.

Although folate has had a special mention, the most important take home message to help improve depressive symptoms is to incorporate a variety of colourful, fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Fruits and vegetables deepest in colour tend to offer the most nutritional value, so we suggest consuming berries, citrus fruits, bananas, figs, melons, tomatoes, leafy and dark greens such as kale, spinach, broccoli, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, green beans, beetroot (beets) and colourful peppers just to name a few.

Consuming these foods raw ensures that you are getting all the nutrients intact; one of the many amazing benefits of juicing. So really we could say juicing makes us happy! ☺

 20 Treatments for Lowering Fever

A fever is when the body's temperature rises beyond what is healthy. This can be caused by infection or disease of certain types. Although there are times when it's best to let the body deal with it, a fever is an uncomfortable thing to say the least. So before you run out and get those pills, here are some natural remedies that have been sworn to work:

1. Take 7-8 leaves of basil and 3-4 grains of black pepper and chew them together. The two spices are very good at lowering fever.

2. Soak basil leaves in boiling water and drink 3-4 times a day, until the fever comes down.

3. In a pot of water, mix a half spoon of cinnammon, 2 seeds of cardamom and two spoons of ginger powder. Bring to a boil, filter and drink.

4. Make a warm bath and add a few drops of vinegar.

water
5. Dip a towel in hot water, squeeze and put on your head. Wet the towel from time to time.

6. It's important to drink a lot of water during a fever, but we recommend boiling them first to prevent further contamination.

7. Drink a glass of milk, and better if it's whipped. You can whip it so: Take two glasses and pour milk to one, pass the milk between the glass vertically. Do so several times until it is whipped and then drink.

8. At night, go to sleep with warm clothes and a warm blanket. During sleep you may sweat, but don't take off the blanket. You need to let the body sweat. You'll need to keep drinking water over the night so as not to dehydrate, but it will help the fever come down. This works because the sweat expunges toxins from the body, so the more you sweat, the quicker you'll heal.

9. Mix 4-5 cups of vinegar and 2 cups of luke warm water in a bowl. Dip a cleantowel in the bowl and squeeze it. Tie the strap of cloth around your ankle.

10. Mix water and vinegar in equal amounts. Dip a cotton ball in the mix, squeeze and put on your forehead for several minutes.

11. Crush two teeth of garlic and mix with 2 table spoons of olive oil. Heat the mix and spread of both feet. Wrap with plastic wrap and stay like this for the night. Stay with it for an hour after you feel the fever come down.

12. Cut a potato into slices and dip each slice in vinegar for 10 minutes. Put the slices on your forhead and put a towel on top.

13. Drink a brew of boiling water with lemon, honey and ginger, several times a day.

14. Put half an onion on each ankle and tie with cloth.

15. Wear warm clother and bundle up well. Boil water in a bowl and soak your feet for 20 minutes. Don't stop because you're sweating, because it's crucial for your fever drop. Just remember to drink lots of water.

16. Mix lemon juice with olive oil and smear it on your body.

17. Dip a pair of soaks in white vinegar and put them on. Wrap the body in a warm blanket and rest.

18. Mix half a spoon of saffron in a glass of boiling water. Let it cool and take a spoon from the saffron mix every hour until the fever comes down.

orange19. Eat an orange. An orange gives you immediate energy, it makes you pee and stregthens the immune system. The grapefruit also has anti-feverish advantages, and so it is also recommended to mix half a cup of grapefruit juice with water and drink.

20. Eat green vegetables to detox your body, and avoid fatty or spicy foods that can elevate your temperature.

Nine Foods That Prevent and Combat Diabetes

Can controlling your blood sugar levels and preventing Diabetes complications can be as simple as eating the right foods? The answer is yes. Certain foods are overflowing with nutritional substances that stabilize the blood sugar levels, protect out heart, and even save our vision from the harmful effects of Diabetes.

The following 9 foods can give us all a great advantage in our war against Diabetes:

1. Apples

At a long-term research in Finland, researchers found that men who ate the largest amount of apples had 20% less diabetes or heart associated death. Their research indicated that the active ingredient responsible for this was quarastin.

If you can't find apples or don't like them (rare but happens), other lesser but still good sources of quercetin are onions, tomatos, green vegtables and forest berries. So yes kids, your mother is right, eat more greens!
cinnamon
2. Cinnamon

A research in Mariland, at the Human Nutrition institute, found that if you add just half a spoon of Cinnamon a day to your diet, your cells will gradually become more sensitive to insuling. This means that they will metabolise sugar into energy in a more efficient process, and so will control the blood sugar levels better.

Diabetes patients who received an extract of cinnamon every day for 40 days straight experienced a noticeable reduction of sugar levels in the blood after eating, as well as marked improvements to the health of their hearts.

Don't forget - You can add cinnamon to almost anything. So keep it handy when cooking and add just a bit every day, it may prolong your life!

3. Citrus Fruits

As you may already know, people who suffer from diabetes often have a shortage in vitamin C. So citrus fruits, chalk full of vitamin C as well as loads of antioxidants - are a great choice.

More importantly - Yummy.

salmon
4. Cold Water Fish

As if getting Diabetes isn't hell enough, those that suffer this disease have doubled their chance to suffer from heart disease. That is why a diet rich in the Omega-3 amino acid, also known as 'the good fat' in cold water fish, can help reduce the levels of 'bad' cholesterol while raising the levels of 'good' cholesterol.

5. Foods rich in fiber

Not only does it help reduce those frequent trips to the bathroom, but a research at the unviersity of Texas found that people who have raised their daily fiber intake from 24 grams to 50, have experienced dramatic improvements to their blood sugar levels. In fact, the fiber rich diet is no less effective than certain diabetes medicines.

6. Legumes

Legumes are a great addition to soups, salads and a variety of other foods. This low fat, low calorie ingreidient is also rich in fiber and proteins, and helps to reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The fibers slow the release of glucose to the blood, which prevents the rise in blood sugar leve

8. Dark Chocolate

Researchers at Tufts university found that dark chocolate can improve the cells sensitivity to insulin (much like cinammon as we've mentioned) and may reduce the risk of diabetes.

Dark chocolates, especially those that haven't gone through much processing, tend to contain more of substances called flavonoids, as well as less saturated fat than does milk chocolate. However, Cocoa powder and baking chocolate may offer a higher concenrtration of flavonoids than dark chocolate does. To those who like White chocolate, we have bad news - they typcially contain none.

 7. Green Tea

Research shows that chronic inflammation caused by fat-rich foods, little to no excersize and a diet lacking in the proper amounts of fruits, vegetables and 'good' fat - can increase your chances of getting hit with a cardiovascular disease and sabotage the body's attempts to absorb the sugar in your blood.

Simple solution: Drink green tea and orange juice. They are filled to the brim with substances that prevent and fight inflammation.

The green tea is also a wonderful source of antioxidants.

9. Vinegar

Two spoons of vinegar taken before a meal can help reduce our blood sugar levels, according to a research held at the university of Arizona, testing three groups of people: Healthy, Showing early diabetes signs, and full on diabetes.

The results: An hour after taking the vinegar, the diabetes patients had a 25% reduction in their blood sugar levels. To the healthy and those with early signs of diabetes the news was even better - A 50% reduction in their blood sugar levels.
