Why Having Relations is Great After 50

The age of 50 and above has a name - the Golden Years. And not for naught. Maybe it's getting closer and more intimate with your partner, or just that you suddenly have more time to spend. Whatever the reason, anyone over 50 will tell you that having relations just gets better as you get older - and we'll tell you why!

1. Self-Confidence
At 50 and above, you are the best version of yourself! You know who you are as an individual and what you seek in life. You know that you should focus on those things that are important to you. This new found self-confidence can help you in the bedroom to live in the moment and embrace your choices, especially the choices you make in your love and sex life. There's less shame, less debilitating self-awareness and more good, confident self-awareness.

2. Spontaneity

Once the children have already left the house, suddenly an air of spontaneity and risk-taking enters your life, and even expresses itself in your sex life. Whether you and your partner suddenly decide to embark on a vacation or spend a romantic evening together in bed, you have to admit that there are a number of benefits to having an empty nest.

3. No Pressure
Once you've reached a certain age, the level of pressure on your physical performance in bed disappears. It becomes more about how you feel in the moment and not about how long you can last in the sack. Having relations after 50 is more about connecting with your partner and finding out what pleasures both of you the most.

4. Leaving the Past Behind

When we are young, we tend to compare our past partners with current ones, but after 50 these competitive or even guilty feelings disappear. Today, you are able to understand your sexual relations as a natural, intimate and even beautiful way to demonstrate your love for your partner.

5. No Worries
Once you have reached 50, it's really all down hill here from there! This is not only true in your daily level of stress, but also in your love and sex lives. At younger ages, the tendency is to think about the meaning of sex and what the implications could be, but at older ages, these considerations are no longer relevant and it's time to wave goodbye to a ticking biological clock.

6. Spirituality
Believe it or not, but sex can even be a spiritual experience. Spiritual sex is known in some cultures as 'tantric' sex, which refers not only to the physical and emotion pleasure of experiencing an orgasm, but the profound and even mystical bonding that occurs when you make love. In spiritual sex, two people can connect, see their souls merge, and learn more about their partner and what they enjoy. Although it may sound a bit kooky, it's definitely worth a try!

7. The Orgasm
Some people claim, especially women, that after 50 it is possible to reach an orgasm even more times and more easily. At an older age, the body is more sensitive and during sex, its sensors have a party! This makes it easier for women to orgasm faster and more powerfully than they may have in their youth. This also means that the men get a bit of a break in terms of their workload.

8. Free Time
This is a major game-changing factor in your sex life. Whereas before, there were a million things rushing through your head, making it hard to focus on the passionate action at hand, once you have reached the retirement age, you have a lot more free time and a much lighter burden on your shoulders. You should use this free time to get to know your partner's wishes, desires and what makes them feel good, for it is certain that these wonderful insights will dramatically improve your time together in bed.

9. Clarity
At younger ages, sex is a complicated, emotion-filled experience that is difficult if not impossible to describe. Once you reach 50, you have spent time with your spouse and know how your love life works. You now feel more comfortable hopping in the sack. After 50, you begin to realize that life is short and that it's worthwhile to take chances and let yourself go during intercourse. Your sense of clarity and balance can help skyrocket your sexual pleasure to new and greater heights!

Foods to eat for a good nigh'ts sleep

Set yourself up for sound slumber with these calming foods and beverages.

Chances are, you know that eating heavy meals and certain foods can keep you up at night, and you probably try to avoid them. But you may not realize that some foods and beverages can actually put you in the mood to snooze.

In particular, foods that contain tryptophan (an amino acid that turns into relaxing brain chemicals like serotonin and melatonin), whole-grain carbs (which boost serotonin production), certain minerals (like calming calcium and magnesium), and some herbs (that have a relaxing effect) can put you in a soporific state.

If you want a night of sound slumber, consider having a light sleep-inviting snack about an hour before bedtime. Good choices include:

  • Half a Banana and a Handful of Almonds: The combination of tryptophan, carbs, and calming magnesium can help make you drowsy. Don't like bananas? Have some cherries, a natural source of melatonin, instead.
  • Whole-Grain Crackers with Peanut Butter: It's another magical combo (tryptophan + complex carbs) that will promote sound slumber.
  • A Mug of Warm Milk: Grandma was right—drinking warm milk before bedtime can help you sleep better, thanks to the dairy drink's tryptophan, calcium, and magnesium. Just make sure it's a small mug and not a huge glass, or else you'll be running to the bathroom all night.
  • A Small Bowl of Whole-Grain Cereal with Milk: The milk's tryptophan, calcium, and magnesium, coupled with the cereal's calming carbs and magnesium can make you feel sleepy. Opt for a low-sugar cereal, so you don't get a spike in blood sugar that could rev you up. Or make hot oatmeal with milk, because oatmeal is a rich source of sleep-promoting melatonin.
  • Half a Turkey Sandwich: Make it with whole-wheat bread (rich in complex carbs and magnesium) and a couple of slices of turkey (the most famous source of tryptophan) and you'll be ready to hit the hay in no time. Low-sugar cranberry sauce optional, if you're really craving that Thanksgiving feeling.
  • A Mug of Herbal (Decaf) Tea: Chamomile, passionflower, and valerian teas each have a sedating effect. For an extra dose of calm, add a teaspoon of honey, which contains tryptophan. (Stay away from ginseng tea, though, because it can have a stimulating effect.)

Just be sure to keep your bedtime snack on the light side. The last thing you want to do is overload your stomach and set yourself up for a night of tossing and turning—or consume extra calories in an effort to lull yourself to sleep.

Nutrition You Need As a Vegetarian!

If you're a vegetarian, or just don't like the taste of meat, it's important to know to add certain nutritional values to your diet, or you may end up being malnourished in some way. So, to keep your body and mind healthy, check that your daily intake covers them all!

Calcium

Calcium, as you probably know, helps build bones and teeth (which are also bones) as well as helping the neurons in your body to transfer messages to the muscles. Fish are an excellent source of calcium, but if you're vegetarians, you can get this essential mineral from dairy products, enriched soy products, nuts, legumes and green vegetables, broccoli, okra and cabbage.

Iodine

Iodine is essential for your metabolism, as in converting material into energy, as well as the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. It is usually found in sea fruit and so many vegetarians suffer a lack. Vegetarian sources include cooking salt, table salt and enriched dairy products.

Iron

The body requires iron to make hemoglobin which carries the oxygen in the blood stream. Red meat and poultry are a great source of iron, but if you are looking for vegetarian alternatives, you can get your iron from dried fruit, legumes, seeds, vegetables and whole wheat grains and flax seeds. Take into account that when you take these with coffee, tea or cacao, their absorption rate goes down because these products contains mixtures that block the absorption of iron. This is the reason why vegetarians are advised to consume iron with sources rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, peppers, strawberries and guavas, which markedly improve its absorption.

Omega 3

DHA and EPA are two type of the omega 3 fatty acid, and they are important to the development of both the eyes and the brain, as well as keeping your heart healthy and ticking. Omega 3 is mainly found in fatty fish, like salmon and tuna, but can also be consumed from vegetarian sources such as flax seeds, walnuts, canola oil, flax oil, soy oil and soy products. Some types of energy bars also have omega 3 in them.

Protein

Every cell in our body contains protein, and we need it in order to fix cell damage, build tissues, grow hair, fingernails and bones. Protein is in almost every food we eat, and so there's a large variety of vegetarian sources: Soy, beans, bran, lentils, chickpeas, seeds, almonds and eggs to name a few.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 helps produce red blood cells and DNA, and is required for the neurological functioning of the body. It is found naturally in meat, but is also added to foods like soy milk and energy bars, and can also be found in eggs and various cheeses like yellow cheese, mozzarella cheese, pate cheese, cottage and eggs.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and is important to bone health, as well as serving an important function in the nervous system, the muscle system and the immune system. The body makes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to the sun, but modern living as well as cloudy environments, don't always allow enough exposure. Vegetarian sources for vitamin D include: Milk and enriched soy milk, certain mushrooms, banana and avocado.

Zinc

Zinc is extremely important if you want a functioning immune system and body cells. Although it can be found a-plenty in beef, you can also consume it from soy products, peanuts, hummus, pine nuts, walnuts, almonds, wheat germ, oatmeal and a variety of legumes, if in smaller concentrations.

Things You Didn't Know About Your Eyes...

Few people could argue that without our 5 senses life would be pretty
dull.

All our senses are extremely important but I think if you asked most
people which sense would they least like to lose they would probably
say their vision.

As with most of our abilities, our vision is something that many of us
take for granted.

If you stop and think for a moment, you will realize that just about
everything we do in our day to day life involves our vision. During
this article I am going to try and see if I can get you to start thinking a
little bit more about your eyes.

Listed below is my top 10 list of weird and wonderful things you
didn't know about your eyes

10. Everyone needs reading glasses as they get older .....

eye 1

This is assuming that you already have perfect distance vision.

If you are currently reading this article and are under 40 years of age
with perfect distance vision, I can say with absolute certainty that you
will need reading glasses at some point in the future.

For about 99% of the population the age that you will first start
needing reading glasses is between 43 and 50 years old.

This is because the lens in your eye slowly loses its focusing ability
with age.

In order to focus things near to you, your lens has to change from a flat to a more spherical shape and it loses the ability to do this as you get older.

As you get to around 45 years old you will start to hold things further away from you to keep them focus.

9. The lens in your eye is quicker than any camera lens...

eye 2

Just behind the pupil sits the eyes natural lens, whose function is to
focus on the object you are looking at.

Just take a minute to glance around the room and think about how
many different distances you are focusing at.

Every time you do this, the lens in your eye is instantly changing
focus without you even being aware of it !!

Compare that with a camera lens which takes a few seconds to focus
between one distance and another.

Just be thankful that the lens in your eye is as quick as it is, otherwise
things would be continually going in and out of focus.

8. Your eyes are fully developed by the age of 7 years old ....

eye 3

By the age of 7 years old our eyes are fully developed and are
physiologically the same as adult's eyes.

It is for this reason that it is vitally important to pick up a lazy
eye before we reach this age.

The earlier a lazy eye is diagnosed, the greater the chance it will
respond to treatment, as the eyes are still developing and capable of
an improvement in vision.

Beyond 7 years old no amount of treatment will result in any
improvement in vision.

7. You blink approximately 15,000 times each day ...

eye 4

Blinking is a semi-involuntary function meaning we do it
automatically, but can also choose to blink if we so require.

Blinking is an extremely important function of your eyes as it helps
remove any debris on the surface of your eye, by spreading fresh
tears over them.

These tears help to nourish your eyes with oxygen and also have
important bacterial properties.

You can think of the function of blinking as being similar to the action
of the windscreen wipers on your car, cleaning and removing
everything to keep you seeing clearly.

6. Everyone gets cataracts as they get older ...

eye 5

People don't realize that cataracts are just a normal consequence of
getting older and everyone gets them at some point in their life.

You can think of cataracts as being similar to getting grey hair, in that it is just a normal natural age change.

The average age people first get cataracts is about aged 70 years old
and by 80 years old you are guaranteed to have cataracts.

In the same way that you could not find any aged 80 years old without
grey hair, it would be equally impossible to find anyone over 80 years
old without cataracts.

Cataracts refer to a gradual clouding of the lens in your eye and
typically take about ten years from onset to them needing treatment.

5. Diabetes is often first detected during an eye test ...

eye 6

People who suffer from type 2 diabetes (the type you develop later in
life) are often symptom free, meaning they often don't even know that
they have it.

This type of diabetes is commonly picked up during an eye test as it
can be seen as tiny hemorrhages from leaking blood vessels at the
back of your eye.

This certainly is good reason to get your eyes tested regularly.

4. You see with your brain and not your eyes ...

eye 7

The function of your eyes is to collect all the required information
about the object you are looking at.

This information is then passed from your eye to the brain via the
optic nerve.

It is the brain (visual cortex) where all this information is analyzed to
enable you to 'see' the object in its finished form.

This is not to say that your eyes don't play an important role as they
certainly do.

3. Your eyes can adapt to blind spots in your vision ...

eye 8

Certain eye conditions such as Glaucoma and certain
general health conditions such as having a stroke, can lead to you
developing blind spots in your vision.

This would be extremely debilitating if it wasn't for your brain and
your eyes ability to adapt to make these blind spots disappear.

It does this by suppressing the blind spot in your affected eye and
letting your other good eye 'fill in the gaps'.

It is adaptation like this that makes your eyes so resilient.

2. 20:20 vision is not the best vision you can have ...

eye 9

When people hear the phrase 20:20 vision they assume that this is the
best vision possible.

However this is not true as 20:20 vision refers to what the average
adult should be able to see.

If you imagine a typical eye test chart the 20:20 vision is probably only
the line second from the bottom.

The line below it is even smaller than 20:20 vision and would mean
you have 20:16 vision.

So don't be so impressed next time someone tells you they have 20:20
vision!

1. Your eyes water when they are dry ...

eye 10

I know this might sound crazy but this is one of strange facts about
your eyes.

Your tears are made up of 3 different components and they are water,
mucus and fat.

If these 3 components are not in exactly the right quantities, your eye
can become dry as a consequence.

Your brain responds to this dryness by producing extra water and
hence your eyes water.
