The infectious acidity

Acidity is very common; however, the discovery of a microbe called H plylori has thrown open a world of problems

I am sorry I can't eat spices – I have acidity. My doctor has advised me not to drink alcohol as I have acidity.. These oft repeated statements are common parlance today. In addition, most patients attribute their various symptoms from headaches to as distant as urinary burning to acidity. It seems to be a common bogeyman for a host of symptoms and diseases.

Acid is secreted in the stomach by parietal cells. The internal lining of the stomach is subject topepsin, bilesaltsandnumberofexogenoussubstances such as alcohol, bacteria and pain killers each with a propensity to damage the stomach lining. The body's response to the noxious substances is to secrete bicarbonate and mucous to prevent damage to the internal lining of the stomach called mucosa. If the mucosa is breached, the cells bordering the site of injury can migrate to a damaged region to repair and restitute it to normal. It always makes me imagine the wonderful reparativecapacitythebodyhas.Itiscapableofregeneration.

Nitric oxide, the wonder chemical of the human body is necessary to maintain the integrity of thestomachlining, themucosa.Thisisalsosecretedbytheliningoftheheartarteriesandisessential for maintaining heart health.

Several manipulations to increase this substance have been tried particularly by anti-aging clinics. A major cause of damage to the stomach lining these days are pain killers. To make pain killers less stomach damaging, the later variety known as COX 2 inhibitors were developed. They have the propensity to decrease tissue inflammation. Sadly, however, they increase the risk of heart disease. As medical students, we thought that all stomach acid diseases, then termed peptic ulcer disease, was from hurry, curry and worry. Back then if you said that peptic ulcer was infectious, you were sure that your exam papers were terminated then and there.

True to paradox, in 2005 Barry Marshall and Robin Warren were awarded a Nobel Prize for discovery of a microbe called H pylori. They had extensiveinvestigationinthe1980swhentheinitial work of H pylori was published in a prestigiousjournal. The medical world laughed at such a concept – how could acidity be an infectious disease - they asked. However, we bite our tongues now at the impact of these organism H pylori on the human body. It has been termed a carcinogen by the World Health Organisation and has been associated with cancers of the stomach. In fact, the journey of these two initial researchers has been epic.

In January 1983, they identified this organism, called it Campylobacter Pylori but the gastroenterologists society of Australia deemed it amongst the 10% of worst paper submitted and was rejected. It was however accepted in Brussels. In June 1984 when a leading internal medicine journal published their report, it was heavily criticised. To
prove his point Marshall then consumed H pylori and fell ill and treated himself with antibiotics to affect a cure. A New York Timesjournalist said he had never seen the medical community more defensive or critical of a study in regard to H pylori. H pylori play a massive role in the development of gastric cancer called MALT lymphoma. It is prevalent around the world and thereby its existence depends on the overall hygiene standards of living. In the developing world H pylori affects 80% of the population by age 20. In contrast its prevalence in industrialised countries is 20 to 50%. Transmission of this organism may occur from person to person and is associated with developing countries, domestic crowding, unsanitary living conditions, unclean food and water or exposure to stomach contents of an infected individual.

There may be a genetic factor responsible for the infection as well. It can be measured by serology in the blood or by examining the stool for the antigen. Histology and culture and the rapid ureasetestrequireanendoscopybedoneandabiopsy taken. Study shows that H pylori is linked to heart disease and stroke as well. Some initial data also suggests an increase in the good cholesterol – HDL after treating H pylori with antibiotics. There is also a genetic make up of peptic ulcer disease and first degree relations of duodenal ulcer patients are three times as likely to develop the disease. People with blood group O are also more likely to develop peptic ulcer disease. Smokers in particular are more prone not only to ulcers but also complications of ulcers. Moreover, smoking impairs healing of ulcer. Patients with heart disease, renal failure, chronic lung disease, kidney stones, chronic pancreatic disease and cirrhosis are also prone to peptic ulcers. Peptic ulcers may be in the first part of the intestine called the duodenum. They are very common and do not become cancerous. But stomach ulcers which occur later in life can become cancerous.

Pain in duodenal ulcer occurs typically in the upper abdomen, in the middle just below the central chest bone, the sternum. A diet full of spices, H pylori and pain killers are the most causative featuresofpepticulcerdisease.Endoscopydetectsulcers in less than 30% of patients who present with dyspepsia.

It is less common to see dreaded complications of ulcers, like bleeding and perforation after the advent of effective acid reducing drugs, which we commonly saw through decades ago – Proton pump inhibitors, H2 receptor blockers, antacids, cytoprotective agents makes it easy for therapy to be effective.

The important message here is that if you suffer from acid peptic disease, be sure you exclude H pylori as a diagnosis. This small bug may land up causing you serious problems, in other systems of the body, more than what you bargained for.

What are the symptoms of iodine deficiency?

All of the symptoms of iodine deficiency are related to its effect on the thyroid:
Goiter – Without adequate iodine, the thyroid progressively enlarges (develops a goiter) as it tries to keep up with demand for thyroid hormone production. Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the most common cause of thyroid enlargement and goiter (see Goiter brochure). Within a goiter, nodules can develop. Patients with a large goiter may experience symptoms of choking, especially when lying down, and difficulty swallowing and breathing.
Hypothyroidism – As the body's iodine levels fall, hypothyroidism may develop, since iodine is essential for making thyroid hormone. While this is uncommon in the United States, iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide (see Hypothyroidism brochure).
Pregnancy-related problems – Iodine deficiency is especially important in women who are pregnant or nursing their infants. Severe iodine deficiency in the mother has been associated with miscarriages, stillbirth, preterm delivery, and congenital abnormalities in their babies. Children of mothers with severe iodine deficiency during pregnancy can have mental retardation and problems with growth, hearing, and speech. In the most severe form, an underactive thyroid can result in cretinism (a syndrome characterized by permanent brain damage, mental retardation, deaf mutism, spasticity, and short stature), though this is not seen in the United States. Congenital hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency is the most common preventable cause of mental retardation in the world. Even mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy, which may be present in some women in the United States, may be associated with low intelligence in children.

Treatment

How is iodine deficiency treated?

There are no tests to confirm if you have enough iodine in your body. When iodine deficiency is seen in an entire population, it is best managed by ensuring that common foods that people eat contain sufficient levels of iodine. Since even mild deficiency during pregnancy can have effects on delivery and the developing baby, all pregnant and breastfeeding women should take a multivitamin containing at least 150 μg iodine per day.

Prevention

How is iodine deficiency prevented?

As with many diseases, it is better to prevent the problem rather than have to treat it. Over the last 80 years, world-wide efforts have been made to eliminate iodine deficiency. Indeed, elimination of iodine deficiency has been a major goal of the World Health Organization. Iodized salt has been the mainstay of treatment for iodine deficiency worldwide, including in the United States. Injections of iodized oil are occasionally used in regions of the world where widespread iodized salt use is not possible. Iodination of water supplies also has been effective in some places.
United States Recommendations – The Institute of Medicine has set the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for iodine in adult men and women at 150 μg per day. Individuals who add tablet salt to their food regularly should use iodized salt. One teaspoon of iodized salt contains approximately 400 μg iodine. Most iodine-containing multivitamins have at least 150 μg iodine, but only about half of the types of multivitamins in the U.S. contain iodine.
The RDA is 220 μg iodine per day for pregnant women and 290 μg iodine per day for breastfeeding women. Because the effects of iodine deficiency are most severe in pregnant women and their babies, the American Thyroid Association has recommended that all pregnant and breastfeeding women in the U.S. and Canada take a prenatal multivitamin containing 150 μg iodine per day.

Are there problems with taking too much iodine?

Taking too much iodine can also cause problems. This is especially true in individuals that already have thyroid problems, such as nodules, hyperthyroidism and autoimmune thyroid disease. Administration of large amounts of iodine through medications (ie Amiodarone), radiology procedures (iodinated intravenous dye) and dietary excess (Dulce, kelp) can cause or worsen hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
In addition, individuals who move from an iodine-deficient region (for example, parts of Europe) to a region with adequate iodine intake (for example, the United States) may also develop thyroid problems since their thyroids have become very good at taking up and using small amounts of iodine. In particular, these patients may develop iodine-induced hyperthyroidism (see Hyperthyroidism brochure)..

Health benefits of Ajwain

It is a common sight in India to see mothers and grandmothers handing out ajwain seeds to family members who have an upset stomach. Carom seeds or bishop's weed also known as ajwain is a common herb found in Indian households and is well known for properties that make it one of the most used home remedies. But other than being a good digestive aid, it has a number of other health benefits. Here are some of them:

1. Beat indigestion and flatulence: Ajwain is packed with tahymol. In fact it's the only plant in the world with the highest amount of thymol. This chemical is very effective in helping the stomach release gastric juices that speed up digestion. It is known to help in cases of indigestion, flatulence, nausea and relieve colicky pain in babies. Tip: Boil a teaspoon of the seeds in a cup of water till it is reduced to half, strain and drink this water for instant relief. Another good remedy for nausea is to take a teaspoonful of the seed and wrap it in a beetle leaf. Place this at the back of the mouth and swallow the juice slowly till as long as the leaf is intact.

2.Improves digestion when your're pregnant or lactating: Due to its great anti-inflammatory and curative properties, ajwain is great for pregnant and lactating mothers. It helps to improve digestion, ward off constipation due to pregnancy and strengthens the muscles that make up the floor of the uterus. After pregnancy ajwain is known to heal the woman's body internally, reduce inflammation and helps maintain good circulation. In some cultures it is also believed to improve the production of milk in lactating mothers. Tip: It is important that mothers-to-be do not eat too much of this seed. The seed is known to increase the heat causing pitta levels in the body and can cause problems with the pregnancy.

3. Relieves cough and asthma: The thymol, present in ajwain makes it a great local anaesthetic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is known to relieve congestion due to formation of phlegm even in severe cases. Tip: Crush a few seeds of ajwain, mix it with jaggery and eat the mixture like a toffee. Another quick method is to tie it in a soft cloth and heat the bundle over a warm tawa. Apply this warm bundle over the chest to relieve congestion immediately.

4. Helps ease rheumatic and arthritic pain: Due to its anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic properties, ajwain is a good way to get rid of pain due to rheumatism and arthritis. Try soaking your aching joints in a basin of warm water with a few seeds of ajwain. Alternatively you could crush the seed and apply the paste on the affected area for instant relief.

5. Instant relief from earache: Due to its antiseptic properties ajwain mixed with garlic and sesame oil provides instant relief from earache due to boils. If a person is suffering from earaches due to congestion, a good remedy is to heat ajwain with milk. Putting a few drops of either of the mixtures in the ear can help relieve pain and discomfort.

6. Keeps the heart healthy: Due to the presence of niacin and thymol along with other vitamins, ajwain is very good in maintaining heart health. It has properties that improve nerve impulses and overall circulation within the heart. Tip: Have ajwain boiled in hot water on an empty stomach regularly to keep heart disease at bay.

7. Cures hiccups instantly: As mentioned earlier, ajwain has properties that help reduce inflammation and soothes irritated nerves. Because of this, it is a great remedy to stop hiccups instantly. Have a few raw ajwain seeds with a few sips of water and watch your hiccups vanish instantly.

8. Remedy for acidity: Since it helps improve digestion, ajwain also helps in relieving acidity. The thymol content helps release stomach acids which helps reduce the regurgitation of acids. Tip: Mix one teaspoon of ajwain with one teaspoon of jeera (cumin) and boil them in a glass of water. The solution should have a golden colour. Drink this whenever there is an attack of acidity for instant relief.

9. Relieves pain due to migraines: Sniffing the fumes of ajwain or applying its paste on the head helps relieve the pain due to migraines. When the seed is burned or crushed into a poultice, it releases its essential oils high in thymol content, this gives it a pain relieving effect.

If any of your symptoms persist or you have a pre-existing condition , please consult your doctor . This is an educational article and not a substitute for proper medical care.

[www.keralites.net] All about Mouth Ulcer

Hands that serve are Holier than Lips that Pray

Mouth ulcers can be a pain. One mouth ulcer can make eating an ordeal and speaking tough. And in some of us, they come in groups, all over the mouth and lips. There are times you wish you could just pluck them off and throw them away. It's also when you have ulcers in the mouth that you want to eat everything in visible range and say so many things to people around you, neither of which is easy. At painful times like this, we wish we could understand the cause behind our ulcers, wish we could get immediate relief and wish they would not recur.
Mouth ulcers, or canker sores, also called aphthous ulcers are small sores in the mouth, usually on the tongue, the inside of lips and the inner lining of cheeks. Sores outside the mouth, on and around the lips are called cold sores and are caused by the Herpes virus. Apthouos ulcers, on the other hand, could occur for numerous reasons.

What causes mouth ulcers?
There is no single reason to explain the open sores inside your mouth. We take a look at the various things that can cause aphthous ulcers.
The most common cause of ulcers is trauma. Accidentally biting your tongue, wounds caused by sharp object (such as pens and other objects that some of us like to chew) and burning your tongue with excessively hot food or drinks all lead to sores inside the mouth. Sharp molar teeth with jagged edges, sometimes left that way after dental procedures also rub against the lateral side of the tongue and cause wounds there. A second of injury often leaves one with painful ulcers lasting up to a week or more.
Mouth ulcers can also be caused by dietary habits and deficiency of certain vitamins, most commonly vitamin B12 and Vitamin C. Deficiency of minerals such as zinc could also cause mouth ulcers. People who eat hot, spicy food and do not drink adequate water are also seen to develop frequent canker sores.
Some of us get recurrent mouth ulcers for no particular reason. While canker sores are not transmitted through food or saliva, it has been noticed that the problem can be a hereditary one, meaning if one our parents develop frequent mouth ulcers, chances are high that we might do the same. People with conditions affecting the immune system, such as HIV, also develop frequent aphthous ulcers.
Smoking cessation is also marked by frequent ulcers which may recur weeks or months after quitting. For someone who has just given up on smoking, this can be a rather annoying experience.
Stress seems to cause mouth ulcers, too. And though many refute or debate this, some amount of research suggests that one often tends to develop sores in the mouth at times of high stress when one is feeling run down. Some women also tend to develop ulcers before their menstrual periods, suggesting that the condition could have hormonal causes. Certain compounds such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate that are present in toothpaste also seem to cause mouth ulcers.
As such, it is often hard to point to an exact cause of a single mouth ulcer.

Types of mouth ulcers
Yes, there are varieties to those painful sores, too. Minor aphthous ulcers are the most common ones that occur on the tongue, cheeks, gums or inner lips and usually go away in around a week's time without leaving behind any scars. Major aphthous ulcers are larger ulcers, usually around 10mm, and take a longer time to heal. They can last for months altogether and can leave behind scars. Herpetiform ulcers are a conglomeration of multiple ulcers at a single spot on the tongue and usually heal in around a month.

Managing the sting
Irrespective of what their size it, all aphthous ulcers have one thing in common. They hurt. While we tolerate them the rest of the time, they are a nag while eating. The pain one has to withstand can entirely kill the desire to eat. Brushing becomes another difficult task. The ulcers, of course, will take their own sweet time to heal but there are certain things we can do to minimize the pain.
§ Over the counter medication is easy to find and mostly includes pastes, gels and liquids that coat the ulcers and numb the pain. Keeping ice in the mouth for sometime before eating can also numb the ulcer and minimize the sting. Non-alcoholic and anti-bacterial mouthwash help maintain oral hygiene and prevent secondary infection.
§ Avoid eating food that is spicy, hot, sour or excessively salty. They sting all the more, even if you have applied anesthetics.
Use a toothpaste that does not contain SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate). SLS is a foaming agent that is found in most toothpastes. However, there are a few herbal toothpaste brands in India that are SLS-free or have a lesser percentage of the chemical. Many tooth powders, too are SLS-free. Run through the list of
§ ingredients before picking up a brand.
§ Avoid eating food that can be painful on open wounds. Potato chips, nuts, wafers etc. are harder on your ulcers. Save them for days when your mouth is healthy and ulcer-free.
§ If your ulcers are being caused by regualr injuries by sharp teeth edges, dentures or braces, visit and dentist and try to resolve the problem.
§ Prevention, needless to say, is better than cure. If you are able to point to a particular reason for your ulcers, try avoid it to the maximum. Among people who have recurring ulcers, regular intake of vitamin supplements, such as vitamin B12 tablets, can reduce occurrence of mouth ulcers.
§
Very importantly, reduce stress. Feeling low and run down and troubling our brains a little too much will only result in painful tongues. Many of us by now are used to getting mouth ulcers frequently and we should strive to do whatever little we can do to reduce their frequency.
N

Subject: Seven Health Benefits of Cashews.

Here are seven health benefits of cashews.

1. Cancer Prevention
Cashews are ripe with proanthocyanidins, a class of flavanols that actually
starve tumors and stop cancer cells from dividing. Studies have also shown
that cashews can reduce your colon cancer risk. Their high copper content
also endows the seed with the power to eliminate free radicals and they are
also good sources of phytochemical
s and antioxidants that protect us from
heart disease and cancer.

2. Heart Health
Cashews have a lower fat content than most other nuts and most of it is in the
form of oleic acid, the same heart-healthy monounsaturated fat found in olive oil.
Studies show that oleic acid promotes good cardiovascular health by helping to
reduce triglyceride levels, high levels of which are associated with an increased
risk for heart disease. Cashews are wonderfully cholesterol free and their high
antioxidant content helps lower risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases.
The magnesium in cashews helps lower blood pressure and helps prevent heart attacks.

3. Hair and Skin Health
Cashews are rich in the mineral copper. An essential component of many enzymes,
copper plays its part in a broad array of processes. One copper-containing enzyme,
tyrosinase, converts tyrosine to melanin, which is the pigment that gives hair and
skin its color. Without the copper cashews are so abundant in, these enzymes
would not be able to do their jobs.

4. Bone Health
Cashews are particularly rich in magnesium. It's a well-known fact that calcium is
necessary for strong bones, but magnesium is as well. Most of the magnesium
in the human body is in our bones. Some of it helps lend bones their physical structure,
and the remainder is located on the surface of the bone where it is stored for the body
to use as it needs. Copper found in cashews is vital for the function of enzymes
involved in combining collagen and elastin, providing substance and flexibility in bones
and joints.

5. Good for the Nerves
By preventing calcium from rushing into nerve cells and activating them, magnesium
keeps our nerves relaxed and thereby our blood vessels and muscles too. Too little
magnesium means too much calcium can gain entrance to the nerve cell, causing
it to send too many messages, and leading to too much contraction.

Insufficient magnesium leads to higher blood pressure, muscle tension, migraine
headaches, soreness and fatigue. Not surprisingly, studies have demonstrated that
magnesium helps diminish the frequency of migraine attacks, lowers blood pressure
and helps prevent heart attacks.

6. Prevent Gallstones
Data collected on 80,718 women from the Nurses' Health Study demonstrates that
women who eat at least an ounce of nuts each week, such as cashews, have a
25% lower risk of developing gallstones.

7. Weight Loss
People who eat nuts twice a week are much less likely to gain weight than those
who rarely eat nuts. Cashew nuts are indeed relatively high in fat, but it is considered
"good fat." This is attributable to the ideal fat ratio in the nut, 1:2:1 for saturated,
monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated, respectively, which is recommended by
scientists for tip-top health. Cashew nuts contain less fat than most other popular nuts,
including peanuts, pecans, almonds and walnuts. They are dense in energy and high
in dietary fiber, making them a very valuable snack for managing weight gain
