[www.keralites.net] Be Careful

13 Household Products You Should Never Mix
More accidents happen at home than anywhere else. Many of these can be avoided by just knowing what not to do. If you avoid these 13 combinations
, you'll save yourself time and money, and maybe even a trip to the hospital.
1. Different battery brands
Mixing batteries from different brands can lead to them leaking battery acid. The reason is that manufacturers use different chemical compositions for their batteries, which produce different levels of current. When one runs out of juice, the other can still keep running, but that causes it to leak, which can damage electronic devices.
2. Rubbing alcohol & bleach
Rubbing alcohol contains ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, which, when mixed with household bleach that contains sodium hypochlorite, will create chloroform and hydrochloric acid, as well as chloroacetone or dichloroacetone. These compounds can cause damage to the nervous system, lungs, kidneys, liver, eyes and skin. Also, high levels of chloroform can lead to dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness and even death.
3. Ammonia & bleach
This combination is also very dangerous, producing vapors that can cause severe damage to your respiratory system. And that's not the worst thing that can happen – if there are large amounts of ammonia, you might create a substance called liquid hydrazine. Liquid hydrazine is highly toxic and potentially explosive.
4. Vinegar & bleach
If you add a weak acid to bleach, it creates vapors of toxic chloramine and chlorine. These vapors can cause serious chemical burns to your eyes and lungs.
5. Vinegar & baking soda
Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base – those two cancel each other out, rendering the resulting solution useless.
6. Vinegar & hydrogen peroxide
Combining these two products in the same container will create a corrosive peracetic acid. In high enough concentrations, peracetic acid can irritate and even damage your skin, eyes, throat, nose and lungs.
7. Grapefruit & certain medicines
Compounds in the grapefruit interfere with enzymes in the stomach, which are in charge of metabolizing certain types of medicine. This ends up increasing the level of certain chemicals in the blood and can lead to a deadly overdose.
8. Alcohol & ibuprofen
Taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach can damage the stomach-lining. Adding alcohol into the mix stimulates this process and can worsen the effect. Damage to the lining can lead to internal bleeding, ulcers and other stomach problems.
9. Alcohol & acetaminophen
Chronic consumption of alcohol causes the body to produce certain enzymes that adversely interact with acetaminophen. The reaction can damage the liver and even be lethal.. In the U.S. alone, over 200 people die every year due to this deadly combination.
10. Dairy & antibiotics
Dairy is rich in calcium, and while it may be good for your bones, its interaction with antibiotics is anything but. Calcium prevents the antibiotics from being absorbed into your body, reducing their effectiveness.
Antibiotics that are most affected by dairy are: Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and tetracycline.
11. Milk & energy drinks
The acid in energy drinks mixes with proteins in the milk, causing the milk to curdle very quickly. The result is usually projectile vomiting…
12. Retinol & glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acid
Both of these skin-care products may help you look younger, but mixing them together is a bad idea. Glycolic acid has a different level of pH than retinol, so when both are used, the glycolic acid becomes dominant, reducing the effectiveness of retinol considerably. It can also cause some skin irritation.
13. Retinol & sunlight
Recent evidence shows that retinol can become toxic when exposed to direct sunlight, and increase your chances of getting a sunburn. It is recommended that you only use it at night, or if you choose to use it during the day – use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.

[www.keralites.net] Chemotherapy Side Effects

Medicine and Chemotherapy Side Effects
Preparing for Chemotherapy
Many of the deficiencies and side effects created by chemotherapy can be avoided and counteracted with a little forethought and preparation. Fortifying your body as much as possible in the weeks or, if possible, months prior to beg
Natural
inning therapy may increase your ability to deal with some of the more uncomfortable side effects. Preparing for your therapy also gives you more control over the therapeutic process, and this can alleviate much of the anxiety and emotional stress often generated by cancer treatment.
Here are 3 things you can do to prepare for chemotherapy:
Prepare emotionally
Get plenty of sleep
Take care of your gastrointestinal health
Prepare Emotionally for Chemotherapy
First, confront and understand any fears you may have about "chemotherapy sickness". In fact, many people experience very little discomfort and are able to continue work and family activities with little disruption. Anxiety often disrupts patients' lives more than the actual treatment. Anxiety and stress also may make it more difficult to recover.
Remember to relax. Many people rush around before treatment begins, exhausting themselves, trying to prepare everything and everyone, anticipating that they will be too sick to do anything during treatment. Let friends and family pick up the slack. This is your special time to focus on yourself and your healing.
Get Plenty of Sleep during Chemotherapy
Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Anticipation, worry, and fear can interfere with sleep, making it difficult to fall or stay asleep. There are several non-toxic herbal and homeopathic sleep aids, as well as nutritional supplements, that can help relieve insomnia..
Non-toxic, herbal sleep aids:
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis): standardized extract 0.8% valerenic acid; 150–300mg
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata): standardized extract 2.6% flavinoids; 300–450mg
Skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia): 1 tsp dried herb in 1-cup hot water; drink in the evening to calm the nervous system
Kava (Piper methysticum): 50mg standardized extract to reduce anxiety that may inhibit the ability to fall asleep
Homeopathic sleep aids:
There are several over-the-counter formulas, which may promote a restful night sleep when used as directed, including:
"Calms Forte" by Hyland Homeopathics
"Calm Formula" by Boericke
"Insomnia Formula" by Hyland Homeopathics
Nutrient supplements that can aid sleep:
The following supplements also may be taken:
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP): 100–300mg with fruit juice or other carbohydrate (e.g. crackers, soy milk); this amino acid precursor to seritonin supports seritonin production in the brain and may improve sleep
Magnesium citrate: 250mg
Flax seed oil: 1 Tbs daily; this essential fatty acid tonifies (strengthens and supports) the nervous system
Take Care of Your Gastrointestinal Health during Chemotherapy
Clear up any chronic intestinal candida or parasite infection. Chronic gastrointestinal problems can severely impact overall health and affect recovery from chemotherapy.
Consult a naturopathic physician or holistic medical doctor to treat chronic gastrointestinal problems. The following nutritional supplements can help build and protect gastrointestinal tissues and enable the body's nutrients stores to rebound from the toxic chemotherapies:
Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum): This herb may help protect the liver from toxins associated with chemotherapy, improving nausea, lack of appetite, fatigue, and flu-like achiness; 250 mg standardized extract, 3 times a day.
Glutamine: This is an amino acid that is the preferred fuel for the upper gastrointestinal tissues. It helps prevent stomatitis (inflammation of the stomach) an can significantly reduce nausea associated with chemotherapy; 500mg, 3 times a day.
Vitamin K: Most forms of vitamin K are derived from bacteria in the intestines. The intestinal bacteria balance is severely disrupted during chemotherapy treatment, and vitamin K deficiencies can create problems with blood clotting and bruising; 500–1000mcg, daily.
Antioxidants: Taking an ACES (Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and selenium) antioxidant supplement just prior to and during therapy may decrease the toxicity of chemotherapy and increase its effectiveness; (Vitamin A: 25,000 IU daily; Vitamin C: 1000 mg 3x a day with meals; Vitamin E: 400 IU 1–2x a day; selenium: 200 mcg daily).
Whole foods diet : Increase your nutrient foundation base by focusing your diet on fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and low fat proteins (e.g., fish, white meat poultry, soy).
Increase Fiber: Flax seed meal has several beneficial properties that can support your digestive system before, during, and after your chemotherapy treatment. It is a mucilaginous fiber, meaning it turns into a soothing protective gel in your digestive tract and, because it is high in Omega 3 oils, can help reduce inflammation along the way. It is also a phytoestrogenic herb that has a mildly adaptagenic effect (inhibits when there is hormone excess, and stimulates when there is a deficiency) at your hormone receptors. This will not impact you negatively if you don't need hormonal support but can work like soy products if estrogen production (too much or too little) is a medical issue for you.
Build up protein: A daily smoothie with fresh or frozen fruit (blueberries, strawberries, etc.), protein powder, and flax meal is a good source of fiber and protein and fruit-derived bioflavinoids; 15–22 gm protein powder per serving.
Drink plenty of fresh, pure water: 2–3 liters daily.
Regular exercise: Under the supervision of a physician, to increase energy and vitality, and improve circulation and waste product removal.

[www.keralites.net] I.B.S. - Treatment in Ayurveda

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA
The digestive fire should be protected by every effort, because when it is lost the person becomes lost (dies), when it gets seized by the doshas the person gets seized by the group of diseases, when it is normal (Sama Agni) the person enjoys long life free from disease. – Astanga Hridaya
Definition:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects about 10% of the adult population and 70% are women. It is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. The wall of the intestine exhibits rhythmic contractions called the peristaltic movements, which helps move the contents in the tract. In IBS, the walls of the intestine become sensitized to even mild stimulus which causes excess cramps. The intestines and the brain have the common embryonic origin..
The neurotransmitter Serotonin is secreted by both brain and intestine. In fact intestines secrete more Serotonin than brain. Some research suggests that IBS patients who suffer mainly from diarrhea may have increased serotonin levels in the gut, while those with constipation-predominant IBS have decreased amounts. Many, who suffer from IBS, also suffer from depression, negative thoughts, irritability and anxiety. Stress and IBS quite often go together.
What causes IBS?
Cause is not well understood. A combination of physical and mental health is blamed. IBS is more common in people who have strong family history of GI problems. Foods rich in carbohydrates, spicy or fatty foods, coffee, and alcohol. Could trigger the symptoms of IBS.
Investigations:
A lower GI series
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Colonoscopy with or without a biopsy.
Stool test
Test for lactose intolerance
There is no satisfactory cure for IBS in modern medicine.
Irritable bowel syndrome treatment in ayurveda:
In Ayurveda, IBS is called GRAHANI DOSHA, which indicates the pathological state of function and integrity of the intestinal tract (mostly small intestine), known as GRAHANI. It is considered as one among the eight MAHA GADHAS (Diseases, which are difficult to treat)
Grahani, is the part of Maha Srotas (Alimentary Tract) which is the seat of digestive fire (Agni) and holds the food until it is digested and releases it. Charaka Samhita describes that imbalance in the Agni is the root cause of this disease. This incorrect digestive fire causes accumulation of Ama or toxin and weakens the digestive system.
Imbalance in any one or more of the doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha could affect the Agni and trigger the complex Grahani Dosha.
The three types of deranged Agni ,
Vishama Agni – due to aggravated Vata,
Tikshna Agni – due to aggravated Pitta,
Manda Agni – due to aggravated Kapha.
However Grahani may also be caused by untreated chronic diarrhea.
Symptoms of Grahani caused by Vata:
These symptoms are related to five Vayus, which are as follows:
Prana vayu related symptoms:
Dryness of the palate,
Noise in the ears – tinnitus,
Cough, dyspnoea
Apana vayu related symptoms:
Constipation
Frequent bowel movements
Flatulence,
Passing wind on passing a bowel motion,
Frothy loose motions,
Painful bowel motions due to intestinal cramping,
Dry feces,
Pain in the rectum.
Samana Vayu related symptoms:
Variable appetite
Loose bowel motions due to increased peristalsis in the small intestine.
Vyana vayu related symptoms:
Chest pain,
Ppain in the sides of the abdomen, thighs, groin and neck.
Craving for all types of food.
The symptoms of Grahani caused by Pitta:
Ranjaka Pitta imbalance:
Feces are of bluish or yellow in color
Fetid body odor
Pachaka pitta imbalance:
Hyperacidity resulting in heart burn and sour belching
Liquid stool
Anorexia
Loss of thirst
The symptoms of Grahani caused by Kapha:
Kledaka Kapha imbalance:
In the stomach causes Manda Agni, low digestive fire
Nausea and vomiting
Heaviness in the stomach
Retention of undigested food in the stomach leading to fermentation and burping with bad smell
Loss of appetite.
Avalambaka Kapha imbalance:
Cough with mucus
Bodhaka Kapha imbalance:
Eexcess salivation
Loss of taste.
Eexcessive Kapha in the body causes lethargy,
Depression
Grahani can also be caused by a combination of two of the doshas or all three. The symptoms in such cases are related to different doshas as mentioned above.
An Ayurvedic Vaidya will be able to pinpoint affected doshas through the Ayurvedic Pulse Reading.
Line of treatment:
Agni Deepana – (Balancing digestive fire)
Ama Pachana – (Balancing and digesting the Ama)
Strengthening Grahani (Gastro intestinal system)
Balancing the doshas
Irritable bowel syndrome treatments:
Panchakarma;
Virechana karma and/ or Basti karma based on the condition of the patient
External therapies, Abhyanga, Navarakkizi, Shiro Dhara, Chakra Basti, Hrid Basti
Internal medications; depending on the phase of Grahani
Deepana – Pachana (Medicines which improve digestive fire and help in easy digestion of food and ama)
Grahi / Anulomana (Medicines which bind and hold the stools in case of Diarrhoea / mild laxative in case of constipation)
Activities:
Specific Yoga Asanas
Pranayama (breathing techniques)
meditation
deep relaxation techniques
Food and lifestyle changes: specific to the individual's constitution, nature of work and geographical conditions
Ayurvedic approach to IBS gives the best results.
