[www.keralites.net] GET YOUR VITAMIN FIX

 Get your vitamin fix
Caroline Bourganel
Vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K: micronutrients that our bodies cant
live without because they cant be produced from scratch.
What vitamins you need can depend on your age, gender and lifestyle.
Vitamins play a part in many different reactions in the body to ensure it functions well,
and some vitamins are specifically needed at different stages of life. In general,
a balanced and varied diet meets all these needs, providing we actually know what they are!
13 vitamins for life
Zero calories but amazing energy! Active even in minute quantities, vitamins play a vital role
in many reactions within the body. In total, 13 vitamins have been identified to date and they are
split into two categories: 'liposoluble and 'hydrosoluble.
•Liposoluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are associated with fats in food and can mostly
be found in oil, butter, meat and cheese.
The body stores these fats in the liver and in fatty tissue, burning them up slowly as they are needed.
Hypervitamintosis may exist, but overdosing on any vitamin taken normally through food is quite rare.
•Hydrosoluble vitamins (8 B group vitamins and vitamin C) are found in the water in food.
These cannot be stored in the body, so you need to get a daily supply.
There is no risk in getting too much of these; any surplus merely passes out of the body in your urine.
Which vitamins do pregnant women need?
First of all, if you are pregnant you will have a special need for vitamin B9 (folate or folic acid),
as it plays a part in the development of the foetus nervous system.
This means women of childbearing age should increase their intake of vitamin B9,
with green vegetables, pulses, fresh fruit and grain or cereals firmly on the menu.
Vitamin D also plays a major role in the development of the babys skeleton,
and you have twice as much need for it during pregnancy.
Vitamin A is crucial in the first stages of the embryos development and when
the foetus begins to develop. Normally, you can get the required amount of all these
vitamins from your diet.
Which vitamins do children need?
During growth spurts, it's very important that children get enough vitamins.
D is particularly important as it helps calcium fix onto bones.
One part of this vitamin is produced in the skin from sunshine,
and the rest is all supplied through the diet.
However, the types of food containing vitamin D are rare: oily fish,
offal and some enriched dairy products.
Another important vitamin is vitamin C, particularly for teenagers
as their diet often lacks fresh produce
(fruit and vegetables).
Which vitamins do older people need?
With age, the risk of deficiency becomes higher... Vitamin D deficiency is particularly frequent,
due to lack of exposure to the sun – 10 minutes a day will help.
Vitamins A and E are also important as their antioxidant properties help your body
fight the effects of aging.
Vitamins B6, B9 and B12 encourage the production of red blood cells and play a part in
protecting the cardiovascular system.
This is why meat, fish and offal should feature in older peoples diets as sources of vitamin B6 and B12,
together with green vegetables and cereals for their vitamin B9 content. Finally, vitamin C stimulates
the bodys defenses and acts like an antioxidant.
A vitamin fix for everyone
Other groups of people also have particular needs: smokers for example, who have 30% more need
for vitamin C.
As for women who are constantly dieting, they often suffer from deficiencies in B vitamins
and liposoluble vitamins as they exclude fatty foods from their diets completely.
Complete vitamin deficiencies are rare. But slight deficiencies can occur, causing tiredness and fragility
when faced with external aggressions (stress, infections...). Eating too many refined foods,
not enough vegetables or having a chaotic diet will all contribute to a low vitamin intake.
You must therefore make sure you get a varied and balance diet at every stage of your life!
Vitamin supplements are no doubt a possibility, but shouldnt be necessary under normal circumstances,
if you are eating right and living healthy.

[www.keralites.net] BENEFITS OF ASPIRIN

The lack of blood to areas of the heart is the main cause of heart attack. The lack of blood to areas of the brain is one cause of a stroke. Aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach, small intestine, and brain. ... This damage can lead to bleeding.

The key point is that aspirin does not cause heart attack or stroke.  It prevents these two life-threatening events from happening by not letting the RBCs stick together  (in  thick- blood patients) and form a clot at  wrong places in our arterial system. The real culprit is the plaque that deposits in a person's arteries, caused by multiple factors, including one's life style  (being a couch potato) and food, and impedes  the flow of blood to vital organs.

Aspirin, developed in the 1890s, is a life saver for those with thick blood, but its use must be carefully monitored. Someone with thick blood and using aspirin (as a blood thinner) must take a monthly hemogram to monitor his/her hematocrit (the ratio between RBCs and plasma: for males it should not exceed 50% and for females 44.5%).

If a person's hematocrit has returned to normal, he/she must stop taking aspirin. If this is not done, aspirin will cause bleeding, as pointed out in one of the posts in this thread.

Coconut water is a God-given  "elixir of life".  If you google to know what it contains, you will be surprised that it contains everything that human plasma contains.  So, drinking a glass of cconut water every day can help eliminate the need to use aspirin. For those of u who are not dealing with thick blood, coconut water gives what we need at our stage of life to continue to be healthy.

How lucky we are that we can buy a coconut so cheap here.  In the US and elsewhere in the western world, coconut water, after all, is the winner over all other energy drinks and is being processed, canned, and sold at a very high price..

Taking aspirin daily may extend life, prevent heart attack--source;DECCAN HERALD
Aspirin can help patients at risk of heart disease because it thins the blood and prevents clotting. File photo
Taking low-dose aspirin every day may reduce the risk of a heart attack, prevent some cancers and extend lives over the course of 20 years in adults at high risk of heart disease, a new study has claimed.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women, researchers said.

Aspirin can help patients at risk of heart disease because it thins the blood and prevents clotting. "Although the health benefits of aspirin are well established, few people take it," said lead author David B Agus from University of Southern California in the US.

"Our study shows multiple health benefits and a reduction in health care spending from this simple, low-cost measure that should be considered a standard part of care for the appropriate patient," said Agus.

Researchers used representative data from several surveys. To assess the long-term benefits of aspirin, they ran two scenarios which project the health of older Americans and their trajectory in ageing.

The model accounted for individual health characteristics such as chronic disease, the ability to conduct daily activities, body mass index and mortality, researchers said.

The first scenario in study, the "Guideline Adherence", focused on determining the potential health and savings, benefits and drawbacks of following the task force's guidelines from 2009.

The second scenario, "Universal Eligibility", was not realistic and aimed to measure the full potential benefits and drawbacks if all Americans 51 and older, regardless of the guidelines, took aspirin every day.

They found that following the guidelines would prevent 11 cases of heart disease and four cases of cancer for every 1,000 Americans aged 51 to 79.

Life expectancy would improve by 0.3 years (largely disability-free), so out of 1,000 people, eight more would reach age 80 and three more would reach the age of 100.

Also, by 2036, an estimated 900,000 more Americans would be alive as a result of the aspirin regimen, researchers said.

However, the researchers found no significant reduction for stroke incidence. Also, the rate of gastrointestinal bleeding would increase 25 per cent from the current rate.
This means that two out of 63 Americans could expect to suffer a bleeding incident between the ages of 51 to 79.

The optimistic "Universal Eligibility" scenario, which assumes that the clinically-proven benefits of aspirin extend to all older Americans, showed slightly larger health benefits than the "Guideline Adherence" scenario.

Although longer life spans mean an increase in lifetime medical costs, "observing the guidelines would yield positive and significant net value," researchers said.
The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
