[www.keralites.net] TWO LIZARDS

 Two Lizards:
Once, Baba was sitting in the masjid and a devotee was sitting in front of Him. Suddenly, a lizard ticked-ticked.. Out of curiosity, the devotee asked Baba whether this tick-ticking of the lizard signified anything; was it a good sign or a bad omen?
Baba said the lizard was overjoyed, as her sister from Aurangabad was coming to see her. The devotee sat silent, not understanding the meaning of Baba's words.
Just then, a gentleman from Aurangabad arrived on horseback to see Baba. He wanted to proceed further, but his horse would not go on as it was hungry and wanted grams. He took off a bag of grams from his shoulder and dashed it on the ground to remove dirt. As a lizard came out therefrom and in the presence of all, climbed up the wall, Baba told His devotee to mark her well. The little lizard immediately went strutting over to her sister.
Both sisters kissed and embraced each other, whirled round and danced with love, overjoyed at seeing each other after such a long time.
Where is Shirdi and where is Aurangabad? How is it the man on horseback had come to Shirdi from Aurangabad with the lizard? And how is it Baba prophesied the meeting of the two sisters? This wonderful story illustrates the omniscience of the all knowing nature of Sai Baba.

[www.keralites.net] This Pune Initiative Is Offering Discounted Flight Tickets to Defence Personnel & Their Families!

This Pune Initiative Is Offering Discounted Flight Tickets to Defence Personnel & Their Families!

Every day, across airlines in India, almost 40,000 seats go vacant. Despite this happening, more than 5000 jawans from our armed forces travel in the general compartment every day due to unavailability of confirmed train seats.

Recognising this problem two engineers from the Army Institute of Technology, Pune, Varun Jain and Ravi Kumar, founded udChalo in 2012.

The intent of this organisation is to make use of the vacant airline seats by offering them at a discounted rate exclusively for those in the Indian armed forces, which includes ex-servicemen and dependents.

Based in Pune, this organisation offers services both offline and online. Their physical counters are present inside Army cantonments, at the SSB and ASC centers in Bengaluru, DIAV in Delhi, BEG Centre in Pune, and MH Kirkee.

Speaking about the people who work with udChalo, she says, "Everyone associated with us is in some way connected to the armed forces. Either they have served or are retired from service. We also have a war widow who works with us."

"We have seen many first-time flight users, and the queries they ask us are usually all about the procedure. How much before a flight should we reach the airport? What documents should we carry with us? How much luggage will be allowed?" says Aditi.

Currently one can find an udChalo counter in more than 18 places, which include Leh, Uri, Shillong, Siliguri, among others. The list has only been increasing since the inception.

[www.keralites.net] USE OF PHONE & SPINE

PLEASE READ AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH
Subject: USE OF PHONE & SPINE
This is what looking down at your phone does to your spine
For the sake of your spine, think about how you're looking at your phone.
HOW long do you think you could last with an eight-year old sitting on your head?
According to a new study by spine surgeon Dr Kenneth Hansraj looking down at our phones is the equivalent of having around 27 kgs worth of weight on your neck.
On average, our heads weigh 4-5kgs, but when we are looking down scrolling through Facebook, the gravitational pull is massively increased.
"As the head tilts forward the forces seen by the neck surges to 27 pounds (12kg) at 15 degrees, 40 pounds (18kg) at 30 degrees, 49 pounds (22kg) at 45 degrees and 60 pounds (27kg) at 60 degrees," Hansraj writes in the paper.
The further you look down, the more weight your neck feels. Source: Supplied
Having this sort of pressure on our necks, is of course not a good thing for our health, especially when the average person spends between two to four hours a day in this position.
In the paper, Dr Hansraj cited that good posture when looking at your phone is having your ears aligned with your shoulders and your shoulder blades back.
This will lower body stress, in comparison to poor posture which will stress the spine and possibly lead to early degradation.
It's not just staring down at your phone that is bad for you.
Studies have suggested that radiation from your phone can even cook your eyes.
By cooking, we mean that if your eyes are exposed to the kind of heat and radiation given off by phones for long enough, tiny bubbles can start to form in your eyes. This is a precursor to cataracts.
This happens due to your eyes inability to dissipate the heat into the rest of your body, essentially because it's mostly operating on its own up there.
Studies show that radiation from phones can damage a person's eyes.
Let's not forget how technology can ruin your sleep as well. This is mostly due to the type of 'blue' light that the screen on your phone, tablet or computer emits.
The light reduces the production of melatonin, our natural sleeping hormone which increases sleeping difficulties and causes more daytime sleepiness. To combat this, scientists recommend turning off all devices at least an hour before you go to sleep.
Insomnia? Blame your laptop.
Using your computer all day could also be a big contributor to why your hands and body are aching. Any repetitive movement can result in Repetitive Strain Syndrome and it can affect any part of the body.
But with all that typing, tapping and clicking, it's usually our hands and arms that suffer problems, with millions of people worldwide now developing RSI.
Symptoms include pain, muscle weakness, swelling, numbness and restricted mobility of the joint. It will typically increase after a long session of computer or device use, according to the health department.
The best cure is rest, continued use will make the problem worse.
Using a computer all day can cause Repetitive Strain Syndrome.
And finally, let's not forget those who listen to their music too loud.
About 37 per cent of hearing loss in Australia is caused by preventable noise exposure, acocording to HearNet.
And one in five teenagers today has some form of hearing loss - around 30 per cent more than in the 1990s.
Our exposure to dangerous noise levels through our headphones is on the increase, with Australians losing their hearing much earlier than previous generations.
The maximum acceptable exposure to noise over a day is 85 decibels - the equivalent of listening to the sound of traffic on the street from the footpath.
Our devices can reach up to 120dB. Osteopaths say that as a rule of thumb, you should only use devices at levels up to 60 per cent of maximum volume for a total of 60 minutes a day. If you can't hear what's going on around you, it's too loud.
Put down your phone!
iPhones, Androids and smartphones are everywhere but it's the holiday season, a time to spend with family and friends and take a break from ever-present screens. Unless, of course, you're one of the millions of phone addicts out there. In his latest song for the Guardian, Joe Stilgoe urges you to put down your phone and reconnect with the outside world.

[www.keralites.net] Rs 40 Lakh Worth Of Food Saved & Distributed To The Homeless, Thanks To Dabbawalas Of Mumbai

Rs 40 Lakh Worth Of Food Saved & Distributed To The Homeless, Thanks To Dabbawalas Of Mumbai

Their magnanimous yet so well-articulated system has been serving as a case study in many top B-schools, yet, there is so much more to them. In December 2015, the Mumbai Dabbawala Association (MDA) came up with a plan to feed the destitute, needy and homeless people of the city.

Lighthouse

This initiative gave birth to the 'Roti Bank' - an association collects leftover food from functions and distributes it among the poor. Since its advent, their waste management drive has saved Rs 40 lakh worth of food from getting wasted.

On one hand are the well-to-do families which generate humongous food waste and on the other hand is the downtrodden society that cannot even afford one meal in a day. Being one of the largest food delivery services in India, we thought it was our duty to bridge the gap between two and thus was born Roti Bank" said Subhash Talekar, the man behind the initiative.

The MDA team has collaborated with many caterers, wedding planners and food joints across Mumbai. They also accept donations from individuals, communities or anyone who wants to help feed people. They then travel to different locations, collect food, check its hygienic standards and then distribute it within the next 3-4 hours.

On an average, they serve 300-400 people on a daily basis. They go to hospitals, railway stations, slums, religious institutes and everywhere else that catches their eye. They engage themselves in drives, initiatives, events and encourage people to donate more and waste less food.
