[www.keralites.net] GAYATRI MANTRA

Gayatri Mantra Detailed Word by Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah
The Gayatri Mantra consists of twenty-four syllables - three lines of eight syllables each. The first line (Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah) is considered an invocation, and is not technically a part of the original Gayatri Mantra as it appears in the Upanishads. Gayatri is also referred to as a Vedic poetic meter of 24 syllables or any hymn composed in this meter. Hence, there exists a whole family of Gayatri Mantras, which serve as meditative aids to pray for the blessings of a particular personal God.
Gayatri Mantra in Sanskrit
Aum Bhoor Bhuwah Swaha,
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasaya Dheemahi
Dhiyo Yo Naha Prachodayat.
A basic translation can be given as...
Oh God, the Protector, the basis of all life, Who is self-existent, Who is free from all pains and Whose contact frees the soul from all troubles, Who pervades the Universe and sustains all, the Creator and Energizer of the whole Universe, the Giver of happiness, Who is worthy of acceptance, the most excellent, Who is Pure and the Purifier of all, let us embrace that very God, so that He may direct our mental faculties in the right direction.
The Four Parts of the Gayatri Mantra
Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah
1. AUM, the Supreme name of God.
BHUR BHUVAH SWAH. These three words collectively are known as the "Mahavyahriti". They express the nature of God, and demonstrate his inherent qualities.
2. BHUR: Firstly, the word Bhur implies existence. God is self-existent and independent of all. He is eternal and unchanging. Without beginning and without end, God exists as a continuous, permanent, constant entity. Secondly, the word Bhur can also mean the Earth, on which we are born and sustained. God is the provider of all, and it is through His divine will that we our blessed with all that we require to maintain us through our lives. Finally, Bhur signifies Prana, or life (literally, breath). God is That which gives life to all. Whilst He is independent of all, all are dependent on Him. It is God who has given us life, God who maintains us throughout our lives, and God alone who has the ability to take away our life, when He so chooses. The only permanent entity, all others are subject to His own will,
3. BHUVAH: Bhuvah describes the absolute Consciousness of God. God is self-Conscious as well as being Conscious of all else, and thus is able to control and govern the Universe. Also, the word Bhuvah relates to God's relationship with the celestial world. It denotes God's greatness - greater than the sky and space, He is boundless and unlimited. Finally, Bhuvah is also indicative of God's role as the remover of all pain and sufferings (Apaana). We see pain and sorrow all around us. However, through supplication to God, we can be freed from that pain and hardship. God Himself is devoid of any pain. Though He is Conscious of all, and is thus aware of pain, it does not affect Him. It is our own ignorance that makes us susceptible to the effects of Maya, or illusion, which causes us to feel pain. Through true devotion to God, we can be freed from the clutches of Maya, and thus be rid of pain and sorrow.
4. SWAH: Swah indicates the all-pervading nature of God. He is omnipresent and pervades the entire multi-formed Universe. Without Form Himself, He is able to manifest Himself through the medium of the physical world, and is thus present in each and every physical entity. In this way, God is able to interact with the Universe created by Him, and thus sustain and control it, ensuring its smooth and proper running and function.
Also, Swah symbolizes God's bliss. All but God experience pain, suffering and sorrow. Devoid of all such things, God alone is able to experience supreme bliss. Happiness as experienced by humans is temporary, a transient state of mental satisfaction, which soon dissolves back into the mire of worldly troubles. Perfect, and without any form of deficiency, God alone experiences true bliss, permanent and unaffected by worldly pains and woes. One who realizes God is able to join in this bliss, and thus God is able to impart true happiness to those who establish oneness with that Supreme Divinity.
The Mahavyahriti can be summed up by comparison to the word AUM itself, and through this comparison to the tripartite structure, can be compared to the essential nature of God, which differentiates Him from the other two entities recognized in that structure (namely, matter and soul), in the same way as the comparison between the three parts of the word Satchidananda, another name also used to describe God...
* BHUR Prana Earth Sat Existence
* BHUVAH Apana Sky Chit Consciousness
* SWAH Vyana Heaven Ananda Bliss

[www.keralites.net] High doses of Vitamin D seem to keep arteries more flexible

Image: Extra Vitamin D Keeps Arteries Healthier: Study

High doses of vitamin D seem to keep arteries more flexible and pliable, potentially warding off future heart disease, heart attacks and strokes, preliminary research suggests.
In just four months, vitamin D supplements reduced arterial stiffness in a group of 70 young black men and women, according to results from a small-scale clinical trial.
The flexibility of participants' arteries improved even more with higher doses of vitamin D, said senior researcher Dr. Yanbin Dong, a professor with the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, in Augusta.
"Their arterial stiffness decreased, and the more vitamin D, the better," Dong said.
Vitamin D is known to be essential for bone health, but for the past couple of decades scientists have suspected it might be important in other ways, he said.
"The vitamin D receptor is expressed everywhere in your body, in almost every single type of cell," Dong said. "That's why people think vitamin D might have something more to offer."
To see if the vitamin might improve the health of blood vessels, Dong and his colleagues recruited a group of overweight or obese black Americans who were deficient in vitamin D.
Human skin naturally synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to bright sunshine. However, darker skin absorbs less sunlight, making black people more susceptible to vitamin deficiency, the researchers said.
In addition, body fat tends to capture and hold vitamin D, also contributing to deficiency.
The study participants were placed into four groups. Three groups took oral doses of vitamin D amounting to 600 international units (IU), 2,000 IU or 4,000 IU daily. The fourth group took inactive placebos.
The National Academy of Medicine currently recommends that people get 600 IU of vitamin D daily, Dong said. The researchers chose 2,000 IU because they suspected that might be the best dose, and 4,000 IU because that's the highest level before people start experiencing toxic effects.
Also, previous studies have shown that, taken daily, 2,000 IU and 4,000 IU doses of vitamin D can bring a vitamin-deficient person's levels of vitamin D back within a normal range, the study authors noted.
Those in the study who took 4,000 IU daily -- more than six times the currently recommended amount -- experienced a 10.4 percent reduction in arterial stiffness within four months, the findings showed.
Those who took 2,000 IU a day experienced a 2 percent decrease in arterial stiffness during the same timeframe. People who took the currently recommended dose of 600 IU had a slight increase in arterial stiffness -- about 0.1 percent. Those who took the placebos had a 2.3 percent increase, according to the report.
No toxic effects were observed among people who took the larger doses of the vitamin, Dong said.
Vitamin D might help arterial health by blocking a hormone system that increases constriction of blood vessels, the researchers said. It also helps reduce inflammation, which has been linked to hardened arteries.
Dong expects that some whites also would benefit from vitamin D supplementation.
"We expect we would see similar effects in white people who have similar vitamin D deficiency and are overweight," he said.
However, taking handfuls of vitamin D will not excuse a person from eating right or exercising for their heart health, Dong added.
"I don't think vitamin D should be an alternative for any other lifestyle modifications," Dong said. "We need to exercise, we need to eat sensibly. Vitamin D is just like anything else. It could be helpful on top of those things. It cannot replace."
These findings, however, present an opportunity to ward off heart disease in younger people at high risk, said Dr. Robert Eckel, director of the University of Colorado Hospital's Lipid Clinic.
Hardening of the arteries tends to be irreversible in older people who already have large amounts of arterial plaque as well as health problems such as diabetes and high cholesterol, Eckel said. This study, though, focused mainly on people in their 20s, he noted.
"Looking at vitamin D earlier in life -- before there's a lot of cardiovascular disease on board -- could be an encouraging improvement," said Eckel, who was not involved with the new study. "We're talking about primary prevention here."
The study participants should be tracked to see if their more flexible arteries translate to lower rates of heart disease and stroke later in life, Eckel said. Future trials should also examine the effects of vitamin D on other races and ethnic groups, he said.

Subject: Aadhaar privacy

UIDAI to Soon Announce Virtual ID, a Two-Layer Safety Measure to Improve Aadhaar Privacy.

Aadhaar-body UIDAI today announced a new two-layer key system to strengthen the security of Aadhaar holders. UIDAI has implemented a new Virtual ID method which would do away the need of sharing your 12-digit Aadhaar number for verification purposes. Under the newly introduced system, an Aadhaar holder will be soon given the choice of not sharing their Aadhaar ID during the authentication process.
aadhaar-data-breach
Aadhaar holders can generate a random 16-digit Virtual ID every time which can be used to authenticate at authorised agencies like banks and telecom service providers.
"Virtual ID will be a temporary, revocable 16 digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number. It is not possible to derive Aadhaar number from Virtual ID," the UIDAI said in a circle it issued earlier today.
While the Virtual ID will be generated at the user's end; At the agency end, the UIDAI has come up with a new concept of 'Limited KYC (Know Your Customer)' which provides an "agency-specific unique UID token to eliminate agencies storing Aadhaar numbers while still enabling their own paperless KYC".
Recently, UIDAI was under tremendous pressure, thanks to an Aadhaar-data leak claim at just Rs 500 from the Tribunenewspaper. The circular also read that Aadhaar ID holders and agencies have to wait until March 1 as the body will release necessary applications for the implementation. "And by June 1, all agencies would have to fully migrate to the new system," said UIDAI in the released circular.
As expected, the Virtual ID will be valid for a specific time period, but UIDAI is yet to reveal the time period though. If a user generates a new Virtual ID, the older ID will be automatically cancelled.
"Aadhaar number being a permanent ID for life, there is a need to provide a mechanism to ensure its continued use by the Aadhaar number holder while optimally protecting the collection and storage of Aadhaar number itself in many databases," the UIDAI added.
Aadhaar ID has become a trending topic on the web these days as several entities are misusing the Aadhaar information which raised several privacy concerns.

[www.keralites.net] NGO Kalam Arakkattala - Fancy Growing a Forest? Here’s How an NGO Did It in Just One Year

NGO Kalam Arakkattala  - Fancy Growing a Forest? Here's How an NGO Did It in Just One Year

NGO Kalam Arakkattala has achieved a rather amazing feat. In one year, they have managed to grow a forest. Yes, you read that right!

Kulleygoundapalayam, near Avinashi, on the outskirts of Coimbatore, is sure to leave you spell-bound. This is thanks to an unusually dense green patch of land in the village. This small forest has been grown on a 22-cent plot of land with the support of local villagers.

The NGO achieved this through the Miyawaki method, which was put forth by Akira Miyawaki. Miyawaki is a Japanese botanist and ecologist, who has been planting forests along the coastline of Japan to protect it from Tsunamis and soil erosion.

The 89-year-old has spent his entire life promoting native forests and has already planted over 40 million trees in more than 15 countries.

"We wanted to set up an ecological system, where animals, reptiles, birds and insects find space for all of their activities right from feeding to roosting. The plant species we selected were mostly native. Many are fruit-bearing, like Indian fig, tulip, pomegranate, guava and water apple," said one of the founders of the NGO, in a report in The Times of India.

A youth from the village told the publication, "Even we did not expect this much growth after just a year. As the trees have such a dense growth, it is not easy for people to enter the forest. We have found many reptiles including snakes inside Adarvanam. Some birds have set up nests and even laid eggs."

Many in India have adopted this method. One such successful adoptee is Shubhendu Sharma, who left his high paying job as an engineer to plant trees for the rest of his life.

Using the unique Miyawaki methodology to grow saplings, Afforestt, which is the organisation started by Shubhendu, converts any land into a self-sustainable forest in a couple of years. He has successfully created 33 forests across India in two years.

[www.keralites.net] Why you should drink more tea and less coffee

Why You Should Drink More Tea (and Less Coffee)
It's safe to say that most people you ask will say that if they had to choose between tea and coffee, they would choose coffee hands down. This may be because its rich taste and high caffeine content gives us a boost that keeps us going. However, most of the time you should drop that cup of Joe and pick up a cup of hot and fragrant tea, and we'll tell you why!
tea and coffee
1. Tea Hydrates the Body
Although coffee is also considered a hydrating liquid, tea has the added benefit of being hot water with tea flavoring. This means that it is much more beneficial to sit down and have a cup of tea because the beverage hydrates your body immediately. With coffee, it take time for the water to be absorbed because it so well mixed.
2. Serious Health Benefits
In a number of scientific studies it has been shown that tea can reduce the chances of certain kinds of cancers and diseases. This fact mostly applies for green tea, which has been glorified in many areas of Asia as the reason for their lean figure and better bill of health. Coffee does have some beneficial antioxidants, but not any more than a cup of tea can provide.
3. Tea Keeps You Going Longer
The adamant coffee drinker will interject here that tea may be healthier than coffee, but it can't compare when it comes to caffeine levels. This it seems is actually a myth. It has been shown that tea has the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but unlike coffee, tea does not have such a drastic energy depressing effect.
When you drink coffee, you get a large and quick dose of caffeine that causes your energy levels to drop at the same speed. Tea, however, has just as much caffeine, but because it is absorbed slower, energy depression will take place over a longer period of time. If you need a drink to keep going throughout the day, drink tea instead of coffee.
tea and coffee
4. More Antioxidant Power
The other thing an avid coffee drinker might tell you is that coffee has more and better antioxidants than tea. It appears that this too is a myth. Companies now put good antioxidants into things like tea to improve their health benefits, so it is uncertain that coffee has more antioxidants than tea.
5. Tea is a Great Weight loss Tool
Recent Research has shown that green tea may be a tremendous aid in weight loss. This is due to the fact that green tea helps kick-start your metabolism, but also that it is a much healthier substitute than sugar soft drinks. In comparison to any drink with added sugar, even coffee, tea is less likely to remain on your waistline, especially if you drink it with honey or a bit of sugar.
6. Dental Health
To be honest, excessive amounts of tea and coffee aren't good for your dental health, especially not for the whiteness of your teeth. However, if you must choose the lesser of the two evils, it is best to choose tea. Drinking a cup or two a day of tea will keep your levels of fluoride normal without any discoloration, while a few cups of coffee means even less fluoride and more discoloration.
7. Aids Bone Health
In a new Australian study it was found that people who drank tea on a regular basis had stronger bones and were less likely to develop osteoporosis thanks to high levels of tea catechins. A separate study found that drinking tea could too promote healthy bone formation. There aren't any positive things to say about coffee and bones, in fact your grandmother probably told you that drinking coffee too early could stunt your growth!
8. Helps Reduce Stress
Ahhh...That's the best word to describe the feeling of drinking a hot cup of tea. Unlike coffee that makes you jittery and puts you on high alert, tea soothes and relaxes your brain. There must be a reason why it is used by so many cultures as a bonding tool!
9. Give Your Immune System a Boost!
Although tea will most likely not cure you of the flu, it flushes the bug out of your system and will improve your immune system so you won't get sick in the future. This also depends on what kind of tea you are drinking. One cup of regular Earl Grey tea most likely won't do you much good, but a cup of ginger or honey and lemon tea will do the trick!
So remember the many health benefits of tea, next time you think about pouring yourself a cup of Joe!
