[www.keralites.net] Vimla Kaul The 81-year-old Indian teacher still transforming lives

Vimla Kaul The 81-year-old Indian teacher still transforming lives
Vimla Kaul with a student of Guldasta

Vimla Kaul has not stopped working since she retired as a government school teacher 20 years ago. The 81-year-old educates under-privileged children in India's capital Delhi.

Twelve of them, 11 boys and one girl, are sitting on the floor of a tiny room, where colourful posters bravely attempt to cover the stains and patches on the walls. They immediately begin chanting the English alphabet - "A for Apricot, B for Blackberry" - fruits that many of them are unlikely to have seen, let alone eaten.

All the children are from around the area - their parents mostly work as maids or drivers, servicing the middle class housing colony across the road.

Guldasta's students are taught English, science, maths and environment. It also owns one computer and offers extra-curricular activities like yoga, dance and drill.

Students of Guldasta

"My husband and I had both just retired. We decided to do something charitable, but were not quite sure what."

That question was answered during a visit to the village of Madanpur Khadar, an hour away from Delhi.

A school is born

As the couple sat at the village centre with some elders, discussing their problems, they were continually distracted by the half-naked, boisterous children running around.

"We had brought biscuits for them as part of a Rotary Club drive. But one woman told me, 'giving them to eat is all very well, but what you should do is teach them how to get their own food.' That stuck with me."

And that was when the idea for a school was born.

So she moved to a park inside the complex, but was forced out by neighbours who complained that the children were too noisy. She tried talking to them but finally moved to the municipal park after one woman went on a hunger strike.

They operated out of there for nearly 10 years, until an NGO discovered and adopted the school. This enabled them to finally rent the building to house it.

"There is an inherent selfishness among our class that don't want to see these people rise. Where will their maids come from otherwise?" she says.

The stories of many of her students, she says, are heart-rending.

"I had one very bright young student who was pulled out because her mother wanted her to help clean houses to make more money. That was the end of her education," she says. Others come without food because their parents don't have the time, or can't afford it.

But others have happier stories.

Two of her students are teaching at Guldasta now, one of them with a computer degree. Another has found work as a mechanic. Yet another was working at a Chinese restaurant Mrs Kaul visited, where he proudly insisted that she would not pay for her meal that day.

"If I can lift even one child out of their circumstances, that's enough for me. But mostly, I want to give them a childhood. Some happy memories that they can look back on later in life."

[www.keralites.net] School Master Uma Venkatachalam-Beggars are studying abroad and child Labourers are becoming Doctors

School Master Uma Venkatachalam-Beggars are studying abroad and child Labourers are becoming Doctors

From begging on Chennai roads...... to Italy to study automotive engineering

Jayavel, who stays in Ayanavaram, didn't go to school till the age of four. "I wasn't interested in studies, and I used to beg till I was four. Life was all about being on the streets," begins Jayavel. However, things started looking up for the youngster, when Uma Venkatachalam, who heads an NGO in Vyasarpadi, found him on the streets of Avadi, begging. It was this NGO that funded him and sent him to school. "I started going to school when I was five. The NGO arranged for the funds and I went to a school .

Jay tried to get a scholarship for the uni. After trying various universities in Japan and across the UK, he finally landed at Glyndwr University, Wrexham. By now, he was studying automotive engineering, with a specialisation course called Performance Cars Technologies. "I was petrified when I was flying to London. I was so scared about losing my visa that I'd carry it in my pocket all the time. I also found the accent very difficult initially. Life is tough there, and expensive, too. So, I took on a part time job at a store," says Jay. But not everything was hunky dory. Bad luck struck when foreign students were asked to leave UK as several colleges lost their licence. "Several foreigners were my classmates, but all of us were asked to leave. It was a disaster, as I had completed only two years of the course. So I came back to Chennai and started applying to other colleges to continue my course.

That's when I got a call from University of Turin in Italy," says the ever-optimistic Jay, who is now looking forward to completing this course.

[www.keralites.net] This Rail Coach, Maintained by Passengers for 10 Years, Is Showing Indian Railways How It’s Done [2 Attachments]

This Rail Coach, Maintained by Passengers for 10 Years, Is Showing Indian Railways How It's Done

On March 29, 2017, the very unique C3 A/C Coach on the Panchavati Express observed its 10th anniversary.

The C3 A/C coach, or the 'Adarsh' coach as it has been aptly name, allows entry only to monthly season ticket (MST) holders. What makes it unique is the fact that all of its passengers follow a voluntary code of conduct that has ensured it a place in the Limca Book of Records for being the first of its kind.

Other than ensuring strict prohibition on consumption of liquor, chewing tobacco and playing cards, the passengers of Adarsh Coach also adhere to cleanliness guidelines, switch off lights during daytime, change seat covers and curtains, conduct regular pest control and take care of small maintenance needs!

Today, with the help of voluntary contributions from regular passengers, 'Adarsh Coach' also maintains a well-equipped first-aid box, a lost-and-found box and a diary containing details of all its commuters (who get free services assisting them not just with buying their monthly season tickets but also with accident insurance cover).

Other than this systematic approach, the coach even has a 'civic director', Priya Tuljapurkar (a television actress), who ensures that the commuters abide by the rules of the coach and have a comfortable, chaos-free journey!

Other than keeping the train clean and comfortable for the passengers, the members of Rail Parishad have joined hands with the commuters to form an informal support system that enriches the life of every passenger. Birthdays, anniversaries and even wedding receptions for the newly married are hosted on the Adarsh Coach.

The NGO is now collaborating with more passengers and various departments of the railways to ensure that other coaches too are kept clean and looked after. Plans to spruce up the ill-maintained Igatpuri station as well as introducing an Adarsh Coach on the Mumbai-Pune Deccan Express are also in the pipeline.

[www.keralites.net] 12 KINDS OF FOOD THAT COULD HARM YOUR DOG

12 Kinds of Food That Could Harm Your Dog.
If your dog is anything like mine, then whenever you sit down to eat he will be right there, begging for any leftovers. It's very important to know what you can and can't feed them to keep them healthy and happy. Many kinds of human food, even those that are good for us, are bad for your dog.
The following are 12 foods that your dog should most definitely avoid. Keep in mind that not all dogs are the same, the size and breed of the dog can determine how it will react to the food. That being said, even if your dog has eaten something from this list before and was fine after, it's better not to feed it to them again to be safe.
Avocado:
Avocado contain a toxin called persin that can have toxic effects on dogs, depending on the breed. A dog that ate an avocado might develop various problems such as an upset stomach, breathing difficulties and fluid buildup in the chest. The pit of the avocado is especially dangerous, it's often slippery and can be accidentally swallowed whole by the dog.
Bacon:
Yes bacon is meat, yes bacon is delicious, and no you should not give it to your dog. Bacon, and other fatty foods, can lead to pancreatitis in dogs, and you don't want that. It's a disease that causes a series of problems with digestion and nutrient absorption.
Yeast dough:
If bread makes us a bit fat and puffy then you know it's even worse for your dog. Raw yeast dough from making bread can ferment in a dog's stomach and after some time, it will become toxic. In addition, yeast dough can also expand in your dog's stomach or intestines and create a large amount of gas in the digestive system. This will be very painful for your dog and might even lead to a ruptured stomach.
Milk:
While all dogs drink milk as puppies, the milk we buy and drink is very different. Also, much like humans, some dogs can suffer from lactose intolerance. The consumption of milk could lead to vomiting and diarrhea, while it's not life-threatening, it can contribute to serious bacterial exposure and is unpleasant for both you and the dog.
Chocolate:
Chocolate is well known for being bad for dogs; it contains caffeine and theobromine which are dangerous for many animals, including dogs. If eaten by a dog, chocolate can cause vomiting, dehydration, abdominal pains, severe agitation and in extreme cases, death.
Onions:
While onions are not too friendly to humans, they can do a lot more than just give your dog watery eyes. They contain compounds that can be harmful to dogs and might damage their red blood cells. If a dog eats enough onions, a blood transfusion might be necessary to give him some healthy blood back.
Grapes:
Grapes and raisins are extremely toxic to dogs and the results of consumption can be devastating. The biggest risk is rapid kidney failure after eating, vomiting or diarrhea. Death from kidney failure may occur within three to four days, so don't take any risks if you love your dog.
Coffee:
Don't share coffee with your dog, just don't. They have such a relaxed life and so much natural energy they really don't need it. Coffee contains a stimulant known as Methylated Xanthine that stimulates the nervous system in dogs. This can make the dog restless in a bad way, and may lead to vomiting, heart palpitations or even death.
Apple core:
An uneaten apple core thrown on the ground or in the trash can be a real danger to your dog. The apple core, and many other fruit cores, contain cyanogenic glycosides, also known as cyanide. It may cause dizziness, struggling to breathe, seizures, collapsing, hyperventilation and shock.
Macadamia Nuts:
Macadamia Nuts are a part of a recent discovery of foods that are great for us but bad for our dogs. The specific chemicals are still unknown, but they cause a toxic reaction to dogs if ingested. Look out for symptoms such as weakness and an inability to walk, vomiting, depression and tremors.
Cheese:
Just like milk, cheese has sugars and fatty components that dogs don't have the necessary enzymes to break down. Symptoms like gas, diarrhea and vomiting are all possible if a dog eats too much cheese.
bad dog food
Garlic:
When it comes to garlic, consider your dog a vampire and keep it away from him. Garlic is much like an onion for a dog, only much more dangerous. A few days after eating some garlic, the dog will seem to be tired and reluctant to move. Another good way to detect this is if the dog's urine will be orange to dark red in color. Like eating onions, a blood transfusion might be required in severe cases.
Dog lovers are requested to share this. Some things are not known to many of us..THANKS.
