OMG- Its' a Jack Fruit grown in Blany D'Souza's Terrace Garden - Mangalore

OMG-Believe it or not- a jack fruit grown in a pot on a terrace garden- I have never seen anything like this before. Okay, if you walk by first cross-Monkey Stand near Marnamikatta, you will locate Blany D'souza's house, with a 1200 square feet house terrace filled with wide varieties of vegetables and fruits, some very exotic kinds. His terrace is like walking in a paradise packed with veggies and fruits, nearly 30-40 different kinds of vegetables, around 35 fruit varieties and bunch of different flower breeds. Blany's passion for raising a vegetable and fruit garden on top of his terrace started 21 years ago after he came back for good after working for six years in the Gulf. A passion that he started for fun, Blany says that he never thought he would be in such a demand in the community for setting up terrace gardens at peoples residences.

The organic garden has black mango from Brazil, Thailand mango, pink jack-fruit, China orange, Israel orange, apple bore, water apple, wood apple, Kabul grapes, grafted avocado, butter fruit, large varieties of guava, cocoa, peach, cashew, ivory gourd, bitter gourd, Brahmi from Australia and other vegetables. Added to all these vast array of vegetables and fruits, what's really amazing to see is a jack fruit grown in a pot on Blany's terrace garden. Even as attempts are being made to revive jack-fruit as a super-food, this terrace gardener has tasted success with the plant. A two-year-old graft at terrace garden expert D'Souza's house has given fruit.

Tata Motors launched the future of mass public transportation at its Pune facility and took another step in the direction of green technology and mobility solutions. The company launched the Starbus Electric 9m, Starbus Electric 12m and the Starbus Hybrid 12m range of buses which are designed, developed, powered by alternate fuels and made in India. The company says will be a good for smart cities. The company also showcased the country's first Fuel Cell bus (12m), LNG Powered bus (12m), and an 18m Articulated bus.
The Hydrogen Powered Starbus Fuel Cell bus is a zero-emission mass transport solution, for inter-city commute and has been developed in partnership with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). Combining hydrogen gas and oxygen, the fuel cell produces electricity to power the electric motor, with water and heat as a byproduct. This is the first time an Indian manufacturer has ventured in this direction. As far as Electric buses are concerned, Tata Motors finds a rival in the form of Ashok Leyland who recently revealed the Circuit series of all-electric buses which was in fact India's first of its kind.
Starbus Articulated Bus
The company has already extensively tested the CNG hybrid buses across the country in cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat and we first saw them in New Delhi during the 2010 Commonwealth games.
It was just last year that the company signed a contract for the single largest order for Hybrid Electric vehicle technology, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), to supply 25 units of the Starbus Diesel Hybrid electric bus with Full Low floor configuration. These buses will be delivered in the first quarter of FY2017-18 and will connect Sion, Bandra & Kurla to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Ravindra Pisharody, Executive Director - Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors said, "We have consistently been developing and manufacturing products that can contribute to CO2 reductions across all road transport segments and with early investments in new technologies, we are geared up to further strengthen our market leadership. With our new range of Future ready buses, we will continue to play an active role in mass public transportation, with a commitment towards striking the right balance between sustainable growth and profitability."

Mohan, a sculptor, and his wife Rukmini, the principal of a nursing college, nurtured a dream for many years of building a community of like-minded people committed to an organic way of life. Three years ago they gathered together 14 other families who wished a life away from concrete jungles overflowing with processed foods and assembly-line goods.

Together, the 15 families bought two-and-a-half acres of land on the banks of the Bharathapuzha river, each family possessing between 12 and 16 cents of land.

Simple mud or wooden houses, self-cultivated vegetables and pulses, fruit trees, cows, goats and many more domestic animals, a communal kitchen for all 15 families to gather together and share food, and a communal guest house to host visitors, are all planned for the village which is being constructed.

And it perhaps is, since it is the fulfilment of a dream long held by Mohan Chavara and his family, and of a community for people committed to organic living. Built on the banks of the Bharathapuzha, a ten-minute walk from the Mannannur railway station in Palakkad, this village is nestled on two-and-a-half acres of picturesque land.

Simple community living

One year ago Mohan's family was the first to shift into the upcoming village. Mohan, Rukmini and their two daughters – 11-year-old Sreya and 18-year-old Surya –have already built a tree house, while a mud house is under construction.

Before that though, they had to do substantial work on the land. "When we first reached here there was a rubber plantation here. The first thing we did was to chop them all down. Rubber is not good for the soil. Then we planted fruit trees and vegetable gardens," Mohan says.

"One more family will move here in another six months, and the others will move in gradually. Here we follow an organic culture, pure natural living," Mohan explains while watering his vegetable garden. "Last year the yield from the vegetable garden was unexpectedly high," Mohan says.

Mohan says that his family decided to build their village after many years of urban living with all its luxuries, when they realised they were still dissatisfied. "For some years we also lived with all facilities, house, car etc… But there is no point to it. We should have a community to live healthy. Children should grow up loving nature," he explains.

Mohan says that he finds the culture of spending lakhs and crores to build concrete houses in urban centres untenable. "People take huge loans to build house and spend rest of their life repaying them. Better to build a comfortable home to stay peacefully close to nature," he says.
