[www.keralites.net] Mohan Chavara, builds a organic village in kerala on the banks of the Bharathapuzha [2 Attachments]

Mohan Chavara, builds a organic village in kerala on the banks of the Bharathapuzha

Mohan, a sculptor, and his wife Rukmini, the principal of a nursing college, nurtured a dream for many years of building a community of like-minded people committed to an organic way of life. Three years ago they gathered together 14 other families who wished a life away from concrete jungles overflowing with processed foods and assembly-line goods.

Together, the 15 families bought two-and-a-half acres of land on the banks of the Bharathapuzha river, each family possessing between 12 and 16 cents of land.

Simple mud or wooden houses, self-cultivated vegetables and pulses, fruit trees, cows, goats and many more domestic animals, a communal kitchen for all 15 families to gather together and share food, and a communal guest house to host visitors, are all planned for the village which is being constructed.

And it perhaps is, since it is the fulfilment of a dream long held by Mohan Chavara and his family, and of a community for people committed to organic living. Built on the banks of the Bharathapuzha, a ten-minute walk from the Mannannur railway station in Palakkad, this village is nestled on two-and-a-half acres of picturesque land.

Simple community living

One year ago Mohan's family was the first to shift into the upcoming village. Mohan, Rukmini and their two daughters – 11-year-old Sreya and 18-year-old Surya –have already built a tree house, while a mud house is under construction.

Before that though, they had to do substantial work on the land. "When we first reached here there was a rubber plantation here. The first thing we did was to chop them all down. Rubber is not good for the soil. Then we planted fruit trees and vegetable gardens," Mohan says.

"One more family will move here in another six months, and the others will move in gradually. Here we follow an organic culture, pure natural living," Mohan explains while watering his vegetable garden. "Last year the yield from the vegetable garden was unexpectedly high," Mohan says.

Mohan says that his family decided to build their village after many years of urban living with all its luxuries, when they realised they were still dissatisfied. "For some years we also lived with all facilities, house, car etc… But there is no point to it. We should have a community to live healthy. Children should grow up loving nature," he explains.

Mohan says that he finds the culture of spending lakhs and crores to build concrete houses in urban centres untenable. "People take huge loans to build house and spend rest of their life repaying them. Better to build a comfortable home to stay peacefully close to nature," he says.

[www.keralites.net] Coffee shop serving drink made from beans that have passed through civet cat... at £9 a cup

Enjoy your cat-poo-cino! Coffee shop serving drink made from beans that have passed through civet cat... at £9 a cup

It is made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by an Asian Toddy cat and passed through its digestive tract.

Kopi Luwak, or Civet coffee, is said to be one of the trendiest beverages around – as long as you don't think too hard about where it came from.

The coffee, which costs between £200 and £300 per pound, is so expensive because of its scarcity, as only 500kgs of the beans are produced in its home of Indonesia each year.

Locals pick the 'coffee beans' from the faeces of Asian civet cats, which eat the ripe coffee berries as part of their diet.

Once they are cleaned they are roasted. The coffee they produce is described as filled with a deep, mellow flavour, not acidic, with a 'unique, soft, sweet taste'.

It is already been big hit in Japan and the U.S. and the latest place to sample the new brand is a coffee chain in Birmingham.

[www.keralites.net] 5 steps to a flat tummy

5 Steps to a flat tummy in 7 days
5 Steps to a flat tummy in 7 days
You want to wear your favourite saree or figure-hugging dress but are worried about your flabby stomach bulging out. Well, you still have a last option. While you cannot reduce fat, you can lose belly fat by decreasing your total body fat percentage. And you don't have to completely alter your daily habits to get a flat stomach within 7 days!
Step one:
If you want to build muscle and burn fat at the same time, you have to perform circuit training, three days per week. How can you achieve this? Indulge in full body exercises like lunges, push-ups, and pull-ups, for one set of 15 repetitions. Don't forget to follow every exercise with one minute of jumping rope. You should be able to burn around 500 to 600 calories per workout.
Step two:
You have to work on your abdominal muscles three times in the week. Crunches and leg raises for three sets of 20 repetitions should be done. Also, do planks by holding your body in a push-up position on your elbows for 30 to 60 seconds for four sets.
Step three:
The kind of food you will eat in this period is vital in bringing about any change. Natural foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and pastas, chicken, beef, fish and low fat dairy should replace processed foods full of sugar.
Step four:
To minimize water retention, lower your sodium intake. This means you need to avoid salt. You can flavour your food with other herbs and spices instead.
Step five:
Stressing and anxiety can cause the over-production of a certain hormone called cortisol, which encourages weight gain about the belly area. So try to keep your cool!
