[www.keralites.net] Depresion in Ayurveda

DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND AYURVEDA
Depression Anxiety and AyurvedaBy Dr. Sajimon George BAMS. AAA. ATMS
Depression is an illness affecting a vast number of people in the globe with an estimated 15% of people experiencing severe, chronic depression at some point in their lives.
The number of people dealing with depression is doubling every 10 years. While many medications have been developed to deal with this issue and they can be necessary in severe cases, generally most individuals will receive the same type of treatment and the root cause may go unchecked.
Depression and anxiety have become an inseparable part of modern man's life. Depression is usually the result of old unresolved emotional problems that have not been addressed, often from childhood.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION
Excessive fatigue and muscle weakness
Palpitations and headaches
Sweating and tremors
Shortness of breath
Indigestion and stomach upsets
Interrupted sleep and seeing nightmares
DEPRESSION: AN AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE
Our level of consciousness is considered to have different sheaths. Ours self resides in our heart which is the seat for the blissful sheath or Aanandamaya kosha.
Another kosha of mind other than the heart is the manomaya kosha. When we are hurt or shocked or a sorrowful incident occurs, we use our mind at that moment to construct a protective barrier around ourselves. In some cases this barrier causes one to lose access to the essential self and the result is depression.
Free flow of Prana allows the doshas (bodily humors) to balance, the seven dhatus (tissues) to develop, and the gross channels (srothas) of circulation, like blood and lymph, to move. When exposed to etiological factors, the flow of energy or prana shakthi is also restricted and the person gradually loses interest in life.
Depression is a kapha predominant imbalance. Vatha and Pitha may also go out of balance by the exposure to its etiological factors. Vatha is vitiated by experiences that induce fear, terror, anxiety, irregular eating habit, pattern of sleep and all forms of excessive movement.
Pitha dosha is associated with metabolism of all things: food, emotions, and experiences. When emotional experiences cannot be digested they accumulate in the body and cause dosha disturbances. Alcohol, verbal abuse, excessive spices and over ambition will create Pitha depression which manifests as anger and violence.
It is worth noting that people suffering from a Pitha depression may commit suicide or engage in self destructive habits.
Initially the brain's powerful changes in electrochemistry cause Vatha imbalance, this triggers a loss of enzymatic activities in the metabolism or Pitha imbalance. Kapha responds by trying to provide a protective sheath to slow everything down. This shut down mechanism, brings about heaviness, darkness, and stagnation.
This condition is interpreted as the negative message of hopelessness and depression.
AYURVEDA LINE OF TREATMENT
Treatment involves thorough understanding of the patients unique constitution (Prakruti) and state of imbalance or vikruti of doshas. Ayurveda takes both the physical and mental plane into consideration while designing the treatment protocol. This system utilizes herbs and treatment procedures to correct the imbalances created in the mental plane of doshas.
Gradually the person moves towards his natural prakriti (doshas in balanced state) and the mansikaroga (mental disorders) vanishes. Treatment depends on the willingness of the patient. He or she should follow the guidelines of the physician and make the necessary lifestyle changes.
DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY TREATMENT PROCEDURES WITH AYURVEDA
Abhyanga Oil Massage Massage with suitable oils is good in relieving depression.
Njavara Kizhi Heating procedure by using cooked njavara rice in milky decoction (Ksheera kashaya) of root of Bala or Sida rhombifolia.
Nasya Nasal administration of suitable medicated oils. This procedure is believed to release drugs through blood brain barrier.
Shirodhara Pouring of herbal oil on the forehead to promote relaxation.
Herbal Fumigation Controlled inhalation of fumes of herbs such as Guggulu, Jatamansi, Vacha (Acorus Calamus) etc are useful for this condition.
HERBS FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
1. Ashwagandha or Withania Somnifera can very effectively solve problems like manic depression, anxiety disorders, mood phobias etc.
2. Brahmi or Bacopa Monnieri is a nervine tonic that enhances mental ability. It calms and soothes the mind.
3. Jatamansi or Nardostachys Jatamnsi eliminates depressive and negative thoughts. It channelizes the mind towards positivism and calms the mind.
4. Guggulu or Commiphora Mukul contains a special mind calming chemical called guggulsterones. This chemical can effectively relieve depression.
5. Turmeric or Curcuma Longa can treat depression caused from seasonal changes.
DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY DIET
The person must not eat to full capacity. Hot, spicy and pungent tastes must be avoided as these will aggravate the senses further. Fluids and fresh vegetables (in salads) must become an important part of every meal. Tea and coffee may be taken occasionally to stimulate the brain.
Most people with depression lose their appetite and desire to eat. For such people, food must not be forced, or it could lead to vomiting. When such a disinterest in food occurs, fruits can be consumed. A diet rich in fruits is beneficial in the treatment of depression.
An ideal diet which will assist in maintaining physical and mental health is suggested.
DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY MENTAL QUALITIES
Satwa, Rajasa and Thamasa are the three mental qualities.
Satwika mental quality activates a persons cleanliness, intellect, happiness, positive thoughts and confidence.
Rajasa quality induces dynamism, talkativeness, ego, anger etc .
Thamasa quality activates lack of intelligence, fear, excessive sleep and lack of motivation etc.
Harmonic equilibrium of these three mental qualities results in mental health. For a patient of depression achieving and sustaining equilibrium of these three qualities of mind is inevitable.
Food is divided in to Satwika, Rajasa and Thamasa activating types. Satwika ahara should be strictly followed as per the physician's suggestion. This includes vegetables, fruits, non spicy fresh foods.
YOGA AND EXERCISES FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
Engage in breathing, yoga and physical exercises to strengthen the mind and body. This keeps the channels of the body clean and allows proper flow of mental energy and nutrients.
Praanayama and yoga must become an important part of a person's daily routine. This helps to concentrate the mind on positive thoughts and a recurrence of depression can be prevented.
Yogic asanas that are beneficial to people with depression are bhujangasana, halasana, paschimottasana, sarvangasana, shalabhasana, shavasana and vakrasana.
Pranayamas yoga to be done only as per doctors advice.
DOS AND DON'TS FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

Exercise regularly and take brisk walks to fight depression
Expose yourself to bright sunlight

[www.keralites.net] DON"T USE MICROWAVE ONEN

Don't Use a Microwave Oven
.

Microwave Oven
Most homes in the United States have a microwave oven, the last couple generations are more likely to have grown up with one than not. The popularity of microwaves makes sense, they offer a fast way to prepare and reheat food and have been somewhat of a kitchen revolution rivaling the introduction of the food processor. [1]
You might guess that I'm not a big fan of the microwave and you'd be guessing right. First and foremost, I am concerned about the effects of a radiation box in my home. And honestly, I have never cared for microwaved food. It's just not as good. It's always uneven- burnt on one side, frozen on the other. It's impossible to get anything crispy, despite the paper fold-up sleeves designed to magically make it happen. It's useless. Some elements of culinary technique simply are not available by way of this artificial method of heating.
It's just the way a microwave works. Unlike traditional ovens, which cause changes in the actual temperature to heat food, microwaves use electromagnetic radiation to agitate molecules. This agitation causes vibration and that generates heat. Now, observers of space will attest to the presence of radiation in our universe. So in that sense, it is natural, but keep in mind we're literally searching space for a justification to say that. Exposure to radiation is not good for your health.
How Safe Are Microwaves?
Not surprisingly, there has been a lot of back and forth debate over whether or not microwave radiation is damaging. You can search PubMed and find research on the subject but you can also simplify the process by just answering the following question. If a microwave the size of a living room existed, would you be alright with getting inside and turning it on "high" for a minute or two? Me either.
Another topic that's generated a lot of discussion is the added concern of some of the materials used in the cookware people use with their microwave [2]. Plastic that contains BPA (and plastic that doesn't) is problematic already. Why would anyone think it's a good idea to wrap up food with that stuff and then give it a good spray of radiation? [3]
What Clues Already Exist?
Many responsible parenting resources will absolutely recommend against microwaving breast milk or formula [4]. If you ever need a blood transfusion the blood will be warmed prior to the procedure but rest assured it will not be done with a microwave. No gourmet restaurant is serving food prepared by a team of trusty microwaves. These are just a couple examples of how microwaves are not used in situations "where it really counts."
You Don't Need It
Thing is though, it always counts. Every meal you eat, especially if you're eating with loved ones, should be prepared on purpose and with purpose. Things get hectic and schedules are busy but there are also natural foods of convenience that can be had during those times. And if you're finding that you're always in the middle of chaos and "have to" microwave food because you're on the go, it might be time to regroup, refocus, declutter, and get back on track.
Give It Up
If you and your microwave are best friends, or even just good acquaintances, I challenge you to eliminate all microwave use for one month. Make it a New Years resolution. Switch to using an oven or toaster to heat your food and water. Or, if you really like, fire. Try it. And let me know how it makes your life different. I want to know how it affects your food decisions and the mechanics surrounding your meal time. Perhaps you could even do without any cooked food and adopt a raw vegan diet for month. Now, how do you think that would affect your health?

[www.keralites.net] Puja Room

Puja room or a prayer room is an intrinsic part of every Hindu hosehold. This is mainly because rituals such as puja are an integral part of Hindu worship. In Hindu culture God is considered the owner of all creation and we consider the puja room as His room. This is a religiously pure room, in our mind. A lamp is lit and the Lord worshipped each day. Other spiritual practices like japa - repetition of the Lord's name, meditation, paaraayana - reading of the scriptures, prayers, and devotional singing etc are also done here. Special worship is done on auspicious occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, festivals and the like. Each member of the family - young or old - communes with and worships the Divine here.
Generally we avoid negative thoughts in prayer. We use only positive thoughts to get results. So, the room gets charged with positive energy, over a period of time. In that room, we generally keep pictures of Gods and Mahatmas. Even though we believe in one God, we keep the pictures of many deities. We light a lamp and worship the Lord. We burn incense in that room . Smelling incense while experiencing the calm silence of the puja room can be a powerful tool for the mind to experience peace of mind. All family members worship God in that room. Parayana ( reading the scriptures) and special pujas are always done in that room. We should make " communing with God " the specific purpose of the room.
The ideal attitude to take is to regard the Lord as the true owner of our homes and us as caretakers of His home. But if that is rather difficult, we could at least think of Him as a very welcome guest. Just as we would house an important guest in the best comfort, so too we felicitate the Lord's presence in our homes by having a prayer room or altar, which is, at all times, kept clean and well-decorated. Also the Lord is all pervading. To remind us that He resides in our homes with us, we have prayer rooms. Without the grace of the Lord, no task can be successfully or easily accomplished. We invoke His grace by communing with Him in the prayer room each day and on special occasions.
Each room in a house is dedicated to a specific function like the bedroom for resting, the drawing room to receive guests, the kitchen for cooking etc. The furniture, decor and the atmosphere of each room are made conducive to the purpose it serves. So too for the purpose of meditation, worship and prayer, we should have a conducive atmosphere - hence the need for a prayer room. Sacred thoughts and sound vibrations pervade the place and influence the minds of those who spend time there. Spiritual thoughts and vibrations accumulated through regular meditation, worship and chanting done there pervade the prayer room. Even when we are tired or agitated, by just sitting in the prayer room for a while, we feel calm, rejuvenated and spiritually uplifted.
The pooja room in our house should be planned according to Vastu Shashtra, because it the place where we meditate and worship. So, it is important to gain positive energies to connect to God.
A puja room, or pooja area, is an indispensable part of Hindu home and the position of the Pooja room in house is very important. Usually, the puja room faces east or west side. This direction promises to bring in happiness, prosperity, health, wealth, and peace of mind. North-east is auspicious for other reasons. In morning sunrays fall directly from north-east and give us positive energy. Puja area usually never faces north or south. The ideal position according to many scholars is to position the puja room in the north-east corner.
The idols and pictures of gods and goddess should be placed facing west or east. The idols and portraits should not be placed on the ground. It should be placed on a small table or should be hung on the wall.
Vastu Guidelines for a Puja room. - Minu CP (Architect)
Since Vastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As an Architect, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically, so that you can decide what you want to follow and what you don't.
WHAT IS THE BEST LOCATION FOR A PUJA ROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU?
**The Puja room should be in the North-East, East or North: The Scientific Reason- Early at dawn, the sun is in the North-Eastern part of the house. These hours are ideal for Yoga, meditation, prayer or study as it is very quiet and peaceful. Also, the early morning Sun's rays have a very beneficial effect on our health. Therefore, the North-East corner is the best position for the Puja Room/prayer room or meditation room.
**In a big site, the Puja room can be in the Centre of the House: The Scientific Reason- The central part of a large house should be kept open to allow proper flow of air and cross ventilation. It makes sense to have a Puja room right in the middle of this court as it can be seen from all rooms and the space is utilized.
**The Puja Room should be in the Ground Floor and not in the Basement: The Scientific Reason- A basement is a dark and dingy place and one cannot benefit from the morning sun rays here.
**If there is no space for a Puja room, the Mandir can be placed in the North-East corner of the Kitchen: The Scientific Reason- In apartments it may not be possible to have a separate Puja room, but since one starts the day by entering the Kitchen, having a Puja here helps one to spend a few quiet moments in meditation.
**Avoid Puja mandirs in the Bedrooms: The Scientific Reason- Many people may feel uncomfortable to lie around with their feet pointing towards the religious idols, as they believe it is disrespectful to god.
**Avoid a Toilet near or above the Puja Room: The Scientific Reason- A Toilet causes disturbance when people use it and also the smell can distract while one is meditating.
WHAT IS THE BEST LOCATION FOR THE IDOLS IN A PUJA ROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU?
**Idols can be in the North-East, East or West of the Puja: The Scientific Reason- The morning sunlight streaming in from the North-East, East and the evening light from the West will light up the idols enabling you to see them better.
**Avoid idols facing North: Because then the worshiper has to face South which is not advisable. The Scientific Reason- When a worshiper sits facing South, his feet are towards the south and his head is in the North. This causes the magnetic North of the body, namely the Head to repel the Earth's magnetic North Pole.
**Avoid broken idols or torn pictures: The Scientific Reason- Praying to a broken idol or torn image of a deity can be distracting.
**Avoid idols facing each other: The Logic: The purpose of having idols in a Puja room is for one to be able to see them and meditate on them.
**Idols should be kept at least an inch away from the wall: The Scientific Reason- Keeping the idols away from the walls, ensures that there is proper movement of air and incense smoke through the room.
WHERE SHOULD THE PUJA THINGS BE PLACED IN THE PUJA ROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU?
**The lamp should always be in front of the idol: The Scientific Reason- The idea of having a lamp is to light it and if it is placed in front of the idols, one can see them better.
**The puja things should be stored in the South-East of the Puja room: The Scientific Reason- All the puja stuff should be kept away from the North-East and East, so that there is no obstruction to the morning sunlight.
**Avoid photographs of dead people in the Puja room: The Logic- While many people believe in showing respect to the dead, it is better not to have their photos in the Puja room as they may be distracting or bring back painful memories.
**Food offerings should be placed in front of the idols: The Logic- Whatever is offered to god should be always placed in front of the idol as a mark of respect. Moreover, it is less cumbersome to remove and replace if it is right in front.
**A cupboard lower than the idols can be placed against the South or West wall: The Scientific Reason - This way, it will not be an obstruction to the useful morning sunlight.
Avoid storing or hiding money or valuables in the Puja room: The Scientific Reason- Many people may feel they are being disrespectful to God by keeping things and hiding stuff here.
WHAT ART THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERIORS OF A PUJA ROOM?
**The Puja room should have a lower ceiling: One can use false ceiling for the same. The Scientific Reason - A Puja room is generally a small room and so having a low ceiling will make it appear more proportional.
**The Puja room can be a pyramid shaped space: The Scientific Reason- It is known scientifically that sitting in a pyramid especially while meditating can create positive effects on the health of the person.
**Keep the Puja room clean always: The Logic- By cleaning the Puja room everyday, it ensures that one spends a few moments in prayer. Also it is a way of showing respect to God.
**Door to the Puja room should have two shutters: The Logic - When doing puja or meditating, the door is kept open outwards and can come in the way if it is one shutter.
**There should be a threshold at the entrance to the Puja room. The Scientific Reason- A threshold prevents ants and insects from entering and this is useful in a Puja room, as foodstuff may be offered in prayer.
**For lengthy meditation, sit facing East and avoid facing the idols: If meditation is going to last for more than 15 minutes one should not sit exactly facing the idols. The Logic-When meditating it is best to face East as the morning sun's rays are beneficial to one's health. If one keeps looking at the idols, it can be distracting. Moreover the energy that radiates from them can be very strong.
WHAT COLOURS DOES VASTU RECOMMEND FOR A PUJA ROOM?
Colours in the Puja room: Can be white, light yellow or light blue. White or light yellow marble work in the room is preferred. The Scientific Reason- White marble shines and reflects light, thus enhancing the bright and well-lit look of a space. The same is true in case of light colours.

[www.keralites.net] Fwd: 10 Eye-Opening Facts You Must Know About Shorts!

10 Eye-Opening Facts You Must Know About Shorts!

As the summer weather continues to get hotter on the planet and more and more people start wearing less and less, it's high time we learned more about one of the most comfortable inventions that the humankind had ever made – let's delve into the history and fun facts about SHORTS!

1. In Europe and America during the 19th and the early 20th century 'short pants' were worn only by little boys. Mature men would never wear shorts because they wanted to avoid looking childish. Only after World War II, when millions of men served in tropical environments, the perception of shorts as being something immature had changed.

2. Before the World War I ladies could be arrested for driving automobiles without men beside them, as well as for wearing shorts. In the first haf of the 20th century, many American cities were cracking down on shorts. For example, the city of Honesdale, Pa., prohibited wearing them in 1938 because "it is a modest town, not a bathing beach". This is why girls appearing in shorts could easily cause a car crash back then!

3. It wasn't until 1932 that tennis star Alice Marble began wearing shorts instead of a skirt on the court. It shocked the tennis world, yet turned shorts into a fashion moment. However, her knee-length bottoms don't seem too risqué by modern standards.

4. During the 1940s and the early 1950s, pin-up queens, most notably Betty Garble, were responsible for making shorts really short. After becoming a household name, Marilyn Monroe also made a contribution to the popularization of really vampy shorts.

5. One of the loveliest actresses of all times, Audrey Hepburn showed the world that shorts could be an element of a really stylish look. On the set of the classic 1954 movie 'Sabrina', she was seen wearing high-waist shorts that left the audience in awe.

6. A British fashion designer Mary Quant is immortalized by the fashion industry as the woman who turned 'short pants' into 'hot pants'. Her super short shorts, along with mini skirts, became a symbol of the Swinging London scene in the mid-1960s and the sexual revolution.

7. The 1970s was the decade that gave the world cut-offs – typically denim shorts, homemade by cutting the trouser legs off. The extreme version of cut-offs were also known as "Daisy Dukes". It is a reference to a sizzling character from the 'Dukes of Hazzard' TV show, played by fabulous Catherine Bach. About ten years ago Jessica Simpson wore her iconic pair of barely-there denim shorts in the 'Dukes of Hazzard' remake.

8. In the 1980s, so-called "dolphin shorts" gained huge popularity. This name refers to their side-view that resembles the tail of a dolphin. The gym scene of that era went crazy over this type of shorts.
