[www.keralites.net] Fwd: On A Delhi Winter Evening!

On A Delhi Winter Evening!

Chetan Bhagat

A dinner conversation that ought to happen over daal and pasta (but probably won't)

On a cold winter evening, in one of the large sprawling bungalows of Lutyens' Delhi, three people sat around a dinner table. A distinguished lady in her 70s, sat across her son and son-in-law. Well-trained waiters served a simple home-style meal, comprising of yellow daal, vegetables and pasta. The lady spoke first.

"I can't believe it. Almost all the old notes have come back. The economy has tanked. Business has suffered. Yet, people love him."

The son nodded his head vigorously and spoke next. "Demonetisation hasn't worked. Yet, they are hailing him for the move. They even ignored the huge earthquake evidence I had against him."

The son-in-law smirked, even as he continued to eat.

"I know that smirk. You don't believe me do you?" the son said. "See mom, this is what he does. He doesn't take me seriously ."

"The whole country doesn't," the son-in-law mumbled.

"What?" the son said out loud, "well maybe if you hadn't done those shady land deals we wouldn't be as tarnished."

"I was only doing business. Found some sweet deals. So what?" the son-inlaw said.

"Easy now," the mother said in a firm voice, placing her fork and knife on the table. The son and son-in-law both sat up straight. She sighed.

"We do have a problem. A big problem. You," the lady said, looking at her son.

"What? Why does everyone blame me? What have I done mom?" "Exactly ," mom said, "you haven't done anything. Or when you do, it only messes things up more." The son's white face turned a shocked pink.

"Mom!" he screamed, "how can you say that about me? In front of your son-in-law? Don't you love me?" "That's the problem. I love you too much. That is why , I haven't said what needs to be said," mom said.

"Me neither," the son-in-law said.

"Relax son-in-law ji. I can handle this," the lady said.

"Of course. Sorry ," the son-in-law said.

The mother turned to her son. "Tell me son, honestly . Do you really want to do politics?" "What are you saying mom? Politics is what we do. You, dad, grandmom, great grandpa, did I miss anyone?" "No you didn't. But just because that's what the family has been doing doesn't mean you also have to do this. Or that you are any good at this."

"Good at this? Are you questioning me mom? Do you know the time I have spent learning about India? I have stayed in Dalit houses, done hundreds of rallies."

"Son, what's the point even if you did all that? People are still not warming up to you. They like the tea seller. They like how he talks. They like how he is strict. They like how he takes decisions."

"They like me too. Don't they?" the son said. Everyone on the table fell silent.

"They don't?" the son said, his voice soft.

"No," the mother said. Tears welled up in the son's eyes.

"Arey beta, it doesn't mean you are a bad person ..." the mother said. "The thing about democracy is you have to become people's choice. You have to connect with them. It's just not happening."

The room fell silent for a full five minutes. The son looked up from his plate. "So what do we do?" he said, "ask sis to take over?" "She doesn't want to do it," the son-inlaw said, "and trust me. I have tried. A lot."

"So what do we do mom?" the son said.

"We find someone else within the party , someone capable. And then we mentor, groom and position him as the new leader of the party ," the mom said.

"What? Like a power coup? You want me to be humiliated," the son said.

"No. No battle for power. We choose and endorse our new young leader. The family stays behind him until he or she is established."

"And what if the new leader becomes strong and forgets us?" the son said.

"So be it. Maybe the family loses power, but at least the party is saved."

"It's like, let's change the captain if we need to, instead of sinking the whole ship," the son-in-law said, and smiled, amazed at his perfect analogy .

"Well, you spoke out of turn again son-in-law ji, but yes. You are right."

"But what will I do then?" the son said.

"You can join my business," the son-in-law said. Mother and son both gave son-in-law a dirty look.

"I was just giving an option," the son-in-law said, "up to you really . Maybe you can make an app or something."

"You can do something good in the party . If you are okay with not being at the top," the mother said. The son exhaled and nodded.

"So who do we have in mind for the new leader?" the son-in-law said.

The mother-in-law took out a list."Here are some shortlisted names."

"Mom, but before that, what app should I make?" the son said.

"Whatever you make, go cashless bro. It's the in-thing these days," the son-in-law said.

[www.keralites.net] Fwd: Go Giver!

Go Giver!

It's been said that you cannot give away what you do not have. One of the most spiritual important insights or secrets in life is that you already have, and always have had, what you need to give away! If you impart the message that 'I am not worthy' the universe will send it straight back in many shapes, forms and circumstances. When we say 'give me' we are imparting this message. We are saying we think we need to get something to complete ourselves or prove our worth. Most of us are taught to live a life of gimmie gimmie gimmie – always striving, desiring, wanting, struggling. We do so only because we think that when we get what we want we will be fulfilled and esteemed by others. But it's an illusion. We are all already complete and worthy but we cannot know it and experience it, until we give it away! Only giving allows us to know what we are and what we have within. Ask the question – how can I serve? The intention to serve will point you towards what you need to give. If the intention is real it also generates the will. The most successful people in life are not go getters, but go givers!

The Role Of My Intentions In Shaping My Future

The word karma has been given many negative meanings. In common language, most people almost always relate it to suffering, but the simplest meaning of karma is action. Newton's Third Law of Physics (every action has an equal and opposite reaction) is a physical law of motion. The Law of Karma is the metaphysical (non-physical) equivalent of the Newton's Third Law - it refers to action and its result (fruit) or, simply, cause and effect. The quality of my actions, thoughts more specifically determines my personal level of happiness. Our natures today are the result of everything we have thought; they are formed by our thoughts. It's not so much the act that determines the return or fruit but the quality of the motive or intention behind it e.g. in the simple task of buying a new car, the intention can be different in the case of three different people:

- I need to buy a good car; it's an urgent need of my family (concern).
- What if I am not able to buy that car model which my wife so badly wants (worry)?
- With me at the wheel of the brand new car, which I will be buying soon, I will be the talk of the town, my office colleagues will really be jealous of me (ego)!

Although the action is the same in each case, each of these attitudes will lead to a different result. This role of intentions become clear when analyzing the difference in guilt between an army officer who kills another while protecting his country and another person who plans for months to commit a murder out of personal enmity and hatred. The karma of taking the life of someone is the same in both cases, but the return or fruit of the karma depends on the intention.

The importance of work is by its quality and not by its quantity.

When I want to work well I think of putting in a lot of effort in terms of quantity. I try and fit in as much as possible in one day, yet I do not find as much satisfaction as I should by the end of the day. I need to concentrate more on the quality of work I do rather than thinking about how much I do. Each action of mine should be with a value and should never be just ordinary. When I concentrate on this, I can contribute for quality work.

Message for the day

To be special is to do ordinary things in a special way.

Thought to Ponder: If I want to be special, I don't really have to do something special and spectacular. Probably, the opportunities for doing such things are also very rare. But we surely have plenty of opportunity to do each and everything in a special way. That means, I value the contribution I make and I value the action itself.

Point to Practice: Today I will bring specialty to my actions. Before I start any action, I will remind myself of the contribution I have to make and also understand the significance of the task itself. I will then start the action. This will bring specialty to all I do.

[www.keralites.net] Why e-wallets are not compatible!

NEW RULES NEEDED - Why e-wallets are not compatible!

Rachel Chitra

Customers, who are regulars on Ola, Uber or shopping sites, many a time find themselves having to use multiple wallets as some merchants are supported only by a specific few. The handicap is made more severe by the fact that you cannot transfer money from one wallet to another easily -or in other words `interoperability' that all banking platforms, including wallets, offer.

Taking to twitter, Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said e-wallets offered interoperability, even as he got trolled for the same claim. "One can take money from Paytm wallet to any bank account and tax to any other wallet. 100% portable.True portable," said Sharma. In responses to customers Sharma tweeted, "Take money to bank at no cost to you (option in passbook). Add add money from bank to any other wallet. 100% interportable switch. Can you move money from Paytm to any other wallet? Yes!" But within a few minutes, Paytm's CEO took a Uturn and tweeted that "regulation does not permit wallet to wallet transfer of money ." Both of which statements do not address the issue at hand, according to other e-wallet players.

"We have been petitioning RBI and the ministry of finance for more than three years. We are not allowed to transfer money between wallets. We can only transfer money to and from bank accounts. Permitting interoperability will really help scale up," said Upasana Taku, co-founder and director, Mobikwik. "RBI permitting e-wallets to carry as much as Rs 20,000 came as a great boost. A change in regulation on the interoperability front will boost growth of wallets," said Taku. Industry observers said another deterrent to collective lobbying is the wallets for now do not seem to have collective interests. Last week, Mobikwik disputed PayTM's numbers that they had crossed 100 million users.

"In most industries, companies come together to form an industry body like iSPIRT, CATMi or CLAI . Banks with the help of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have interoperability at all levels. With wallets, there is no collective voice or forum for them to make their representations," said Lokvir Kapoor, CEO, Pine Labs.

"At the consumer end again, with concerns being voiced as to the security of e-wallets, there are no redressal forums. For banking frauds or negligence, there is the banking ombudsman, but for e-wallets?" asks Kapoor. Concerns about e-wallet security , led SBI to stop supporting Paytm, Mobikwik, FreeCharge, Oxigen on its platform since last June. ICICI Bank on Sunday said it has stopped supporting Flipkart's PhonePe UPI application. In September, Freecharge told TOI that about 100 customers had lost up to Rs 2.9 lakh while using its services and it has registered a complaint.

"As per UPI, only bank applications can be used by customers. We will have to take up with RBI and NPCI to get nonbanks blocked," said Manju Agarwal, deputy MD, SBI.

Cite reasons for blocking, PhonePe to ICICI, P18 After ICICI Bank blocked UPI transactions made through the Flipkart-owned PhonePe app, its cofounder & CEO Sameer Nigam, urged the country's largest private bank to cite reasons for its move. About 72 hours ago, ICICI Bank denied permission to its customers to link their accounts to PhonePe. The bank had told TOI in a prepared statement on Sunday , that it had raised `security concerns' at appropriate forums about PhonePe's access to Unified Payments Interface (UPI) data.

Nigam wrote in an open letter on Monday that due to ICICI Bank's move, about 20,000 transactions had failed which amounted to Rs 5 crore. No one is telling us what the exact issues are, yet ICICI Bank claims the blockage will stay until the concerns are resolved, he said. The timing of ICICI Bank's action against PhonePe is surprising as the app has been live since August last year.PhonePe is a third-party app but it inked a partnership with Yes Bank to go live on UPI. Interestingly , Flipkart recently integrated UPI payments on its website and is offering customers cashback on their wallet when they us PhonePe UPI payment.

"Our UPI payments integration has been live on Flipkart, Myntra and a couple of smaller merchants' websites since October 2016. So ICICI had more than two months to inform Yes Bank, NPCI or us if they felt our solutions did not meet the UPI guidelines. Either they felt our integration was okay until now, or they felt we were being restrictive, but decided to sit on this fact till now for reasons known only to them," he said, while requesting the bank to share its de tailed reservations so that PhonePe can review them.Till Monday evening, PhonePe or Yes Bank did not put out any official communication, claimed Nigam. TOI reported in its January 16 edition that latest developments are indicative of a turf war brewing between the traditional banking firms and new age digital payment companies. The State Bank of India deputy managing director Manju Agarwal had told TOI that the bank is making sure customer data doesn't leak, and that they were planning to take the issue with the Reserve Bank of India and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to get non-banks blocked.

Nigam claimed his company had taken all necessary steps before it went live on UPI. "We went through over a 100 plus use cases, detailed certification, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing and third party application security testing, before NPCI gave us permission to go live." Nigam said he was hoping that ICICI Bank will reverse its move and work towards finding a lasting solution.

[www.keralites.net] How to Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind!

How to Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind

Method 1 of 3: Relaxing the Body

1.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 1 Version 3.jpg

2.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 2 Version 3.jpg

3.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 3 Version 3.jpg

4.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 4 Version 3.jpg

Practice mindfulness meditation. This practice focuses on breathing[4] and keeps you in the here and now, helping you to achieve a stable and calm mind.

o    Begin simply, with brief sessions of 10 or 15 minutes so that the practice does not seem too overwhelming or burdensome.[5] Sit in a comfortable position on the floor (or in a chair if your pain limits your ability to sit on the floor); pay attention to your deep, measured breathing; and focus on an object or on mentally repeating a soothing or uplifting phrase (this is called a mantra).[6]

o    It may take a bit of practice to get the hang of meditation, but it is a powerful way to decrease the intensity of chronic pain.[7]

o    Recent studies suggest that meditation may be able to actually change the brain and, thus, how the brain processes pain.[8]

Method 2 of 3: Changing Your Focus

1.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 5 Version 3.jpg

1

Divert your attention to another area of the body. Instead of thinking about your aching head or burning hands, focus on another part of the body that is not in pain.[9]

2.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 6 Version 3.jpg

2

Seek out positive distractions. Pain has a way of absorbing all of our attention, but we can fight back by focusing on things we enjoy, such as watching a movie, playing a game, or spending time with a friend.[10]

o    Research suggests that listening to music is especially successful in helping people with chronic pain. It decreases pain and feelings of depression while increasing the listener's sense of power.[11]

3.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 7 Version 2.jpg

3

Imagine your favorite food. Indulging in fantasies about food has been shown to alleviate pain—trying imagining a decadent dessert or your favorite Sunday dinner.[12]Whi le this is a short-term solution, it's worth a shot if you're looking for a quick jolt of relief.

Method 3 of 3: Getting Creative

1.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 8 Version 2.jpg

1

Use a mental anesthetic. Imagine giving yourself a shot of novocaine into the site of your pain and creating a numbing sensation. Alternately, picture placing ice packs on the area that hurts and bringing cool, soothing, numbing relief to the pain that way.[13]

o    To see this thought experiment through to the end, picture the end result of the anesthetic, including what the painful area would feel like after the injection and what the experience of relaxation would be like as the medicine starts to work.[14]

2.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 9 Version 2.jpg

2

Try visualization. Visualization, also called guided imagery, involves coming up with a detailed ideal situation and the emotions that accompany it.[15] In the case of severe or chronic pain, this most likely means imagining a situation in which you are pain-free, at ease, and feeling well and unstressed.

o    First, go to a quiet area and get into a comfortable, relaxed position; next, picture someplace you love, whether a favored spot from childhood, the place you like to vacation, etc. Tune into all five senses—sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. Stay in the moment, paying attention to all the little details around you.[16] If you immerse yourself fully enough in this "scene," you may be able to guide yourself away from your pain.

o    Visualization can be done in as little as a few minutes, or you may use the process for an hour. Details are key to giving yourself a full, realistic sense of what it would feel like, both physically and emotionally, to be free of pain.[17]

3.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 10 Version 2.jpg

3

Turn your pain into a symbol. If you imagine your pain as a loud noise or a bright light, you can turn down the volume/brightness and thus reduce the amount of pain that you feel.[18][19]

o    The trick here is to imagine that you are gradually reducing the irritating quality of the symbol (for example, the grating sound of a car horn); as you reduce that irritation, so, too, will you reduce the irritation caused by your pain. Picture turning off a physical knob and thus "turning off" the symbol and with it the pain.[20]

4.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 11 Version 2.jpg

4

Engage in positive thinking. Chronic pain can cause very unpleasant and negative thoughts that actually increase pain.[21] Try casting situations in a less dire light or thinking about positive imagery (the beach, a place with family and friends)[22] in order to decrease pain.

o    You will have good days and bad days, but if you accept that pain is something you can work around and live with—not something you must fight against every moment—living with it may become easier.[23]

o    Expectations have a strong impact on the severity of the pain you feel, so telling yourself that it won't be so bad may actually help that to come true.[24]
