Questioning the miracles of Saint Teresa

Mother Teresa will become a saint on Sunday, on the basis of two miracles of healing.

Questioning the miracles of Saint Teresa

Philip Almond, The Conversation

In 2002, the Vatican officially recognised as a miracle the healing of an Indian woman's cancer of the abdomen. This occurred as the result of the application of a locket containing Mother Teresa's picture. The woman, Monica Besra, said a beam of light had emanated from the picture, curing her cancerous tumour.
This one miracle was sufficient for Mother Teresa to be beatified in 2003. This meant that she had the title "Blessed" bestowed on her and that she was, from then on, able to intercede with God on behalf of individuals who prayed in her name. The late Christopher Hitchens (who had written a pretty scathing book about her) had been called upon by the Vatican to act as "the Devil's advocate" and to give evidence against her character. Hitchen's criticisms made no difference (which was not really a surprise to anyone).
On 17 December, 2015, Pope Francis recognised a second miracle attributable to Mother Teresa. This was the healing in 2008 of a 42-year-old Brazilian man with a number of brain tumours – moments before he was due to undergo surgery. This healing cleared the way for her canonisation as Saint Teresa.
On Sunday, Mother Teresa will be recognised as a saint within the Roman Catholic Church. It is a decision made by Pope Francis on the recommendation of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints – made on the basis of a thorough investigation of the holiness of the candidate's life.
But it is crucially dependent on the recognition by the Congregation that two miracles, usually of healing, have been performed by God as a direct result of the intercession with God by the candidate.
These cures are only accepted as "miracles", that is, as the result of the direct intervention of God, on the basis of strict medical evidence to the effect that the illness was medically incurable, that the cures were decisive, and that they were clearly the result of appeal to the candidate.
Thus, on this account, miracles do happen to people diagnosed with incurable diseases and these are the result of the direct action of God at the behest of deceased persons like Saint Teresa. Apparently, she and other saints, have a lot of influence in heavenly places over what happens down here. So, on the face of it, we've taken off our modern thinking caps and gone all medieval.
Let's not argue over whether scientifically inexplicable events occur. They do. And let's allow that, in the case of the two cures put forward as proof of Mother Teresa's saintly status, the medical evidence stacks up in favour of something medically inexplicable having occurred.
Even so, there are any number of reasons why the absence of a scientific explanation should not propel us to uncritically endorse divine intervention as the cause of these events.
The first of these goes to what is known as the problem of "the God of the Gaps". It's always a theologically risky procedure to plug God in as an explanation where science fails. This is for the simple reason that, if a scientific explanation were to come about tomorrow, the miracle would then be shown not to have occurred. The arena of God's activity has significantly shrunk over the last 300 as a consequence of this theory.
The second reason to be sceptical has to do with God's apparent disinclination to intervene more often. If God can heal the sick on one occasion, why is he not more active on other occasions of incurable illness? And if he can act on occasion to cure illnesses, why can't he intervene to stop earthquakes and other natural disasters?
God's apparent disinclination to act as often as he might, and probably should, raises awkward questions about whether he is unwilling to act or whether he is incapable of doing so.
Thirdly, at least since the Reformation, miracles have been an important part of Roman Catholicism's claims to religious truth, particularly against Protestantism. Miracles were then, and remain now, key features of Catholicism's evangelical outreach. Miracles, Saints, and conversions all go together. So miracles come trailing clouds of Catholic doctrines, exclusive claims to religious truth, invitations to join up, and encouragements for the faithful to keep coming back.
For its part, Protestantism countered, not by attempting to score more miracles, but by taking its bat and ball home. It denied the doctrine that the Saints intercede to God on our behalf (because there were no Saints to do so). And it argued that the age of miracles had ceased at the end of New Testament times. It also declared that all Christians (or at least all Protestants) were Saints. As a counter-claim, this always looked a bit soft. Neither most Protestants nor most Catholics, nor for that matter most of us, are conspicuous for outstanding goodness and holiness.
Alternatively, in more Fundamentalist branches of Protestantism, miracles continued but as the direct intervention of God. The saintly middle men and women had been made redundant.
All this is not to deny Mother Teresa's particular claims to goodness and holiness. Nor is it to question the sincerity of those who believe that her intercession can result in the cure of the incurable.
But it is to remind us that we should be wary of uncritical endorsement of claims to the miraculous. Religious belief of any sort can be a motivation to perfect goodness, as it is in many religions. As we are unfortunately all too currently aware, it can just as easily inspire appalling acts of evil.
And granted that God does have the capacity to act in the world, it does often look as if he is not paying the sort of attention to what's going on that he should be.
Philip Almond, Professorial Research Fellow in the History of Religious Thought, The University of Queensland.

VERY IMPORTANT

Please  read and share with others .
The Indian Railways (IR) has selected three insurance companies —
Shriram General Insurance, ICICI
Lombard General Insurance and
Royal Sundaram General Insurance —
for insuring its passengers.

To begin next month, it would be among the cheapest in the world,
at a premium of 92p a passenger for coverage up to Rs 10 lakh.
The three were selected through competitive bidding, among 17 companies.
At first, insurance would be available for those who book tickets online.
Later, the scheme could be extended to season ticket travellers,
where for a premium of Rs 200-300, they will get annual coverage.

"Irrespective of class, destination and distance to be travelled,
the rate of premium and coverage would be uniform.
Travellers who book tickets online through our website can opt for it
giving a nominee's name. Later, it might be extended to unreserved travellers and
monthly season ticket holders," said A K Manocha, chairman and managing director of
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), an IR subsidiary that
handles online ticketing, catering and rail tourism.

In the case of death or permanent disability of the traveller, Rs 10 lakh will be provided.
For permanent partial disability, the coverage extends to Rs 7.5 lakh; for
hospital expenses, the coverage would be up to Rs 2 lakh.
In addition, the insurance would provide Rs 10,000 for transportation of
mortal remains. Apart from rail mishaps, the coverage would take care of
terrorist attacks and accidental fall of a passenger from a train and
normal accidents, riots, robbery and dacoity.

Of the three companies selected, each would get insurance
policies on a rotation basis from an automated system.

Shriram General Insurance was the lowest bidder, quoting 92p. ICICI Lombard
quoted 99p and Royal Sundaram Rs 1.15.
The other two will have to match the lowest bid of 92p.

Since 1994, the railways had been paying an annual premium to insurers,
through which those on a valid ticket in a passenger train, as also platform ticket holders,
were insured. According to media reports, it was discontinued in 2008-09, citing
higher premiums as a reason. Since then, IR has been compensating for
deaths and injuries from its own revenue.

On an average, about 15,000 people are said to die in rail mishaps yearly.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, in 2014, 28,360 rail accidents
were reported, in which 3,882 were injured and 25,006 lost their lives.

[www.keralites.net] HOW TO DEAL WITH PMS SYNDROME

HOW TO DEAL WITH PMS SYNDROME
I would like to address one of your possible issues
called PMS. At the monthly attack of the Mother Nature, women
undergo a terrible combination of physical, psychological and
emotional disturbances with varying severity. Though it is nothing
to worry about, it highly upsets the environment for a few days.
1. Intense irritability and mood swings
2. Sadness and crying bouts
3. Poor concentration
4. Sleep disorders
5. Physiological changes including breast tenderness, headaches,
digestive problems, bloating and weakness.
6. Stress, anxiety and low self esteem
These are some changes that you experience during those days. Have
you wondered about their causes?
# Hormonal changes
# Changes in the brain chemicals
# Stress
# Poor nutrition and dietary habits
# Alcohol or caffeine consumption
# A family history of depression

The home remedies I am going to mention are suggested by different
women who had experience fighting their PMS symptoms.
1. Exercise. There is no question of what exercise and for how
long. You can do any moderate exercise that you are comfortable
with for at least 30 minutes. Some women also enjoy rigorous
physical activity for 15 minutes. Cuddling up in bed is not
recommended unless advised by the doctor.
2. A healthy diet with whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.
Low vitamins and nutrients can aggravate PMS.
3. Sugary foods, excess salt, refined foods and caffeine should be
controlled.
4. Some women find relief by eating foods rich in magnesium,
Vitamin B6 and Vitamin E.
5. If you have digestive problems, don't go hungry. Eat small,
frequent meals.
6. See if milk can make you feel better.
7. Omega 3 acids may improve your irritability and mood swings.
8. Try pineapples. Who knows, manganese in pineapples, brown rice
or raspberries may work better.
9. Sleep well for at least 8 hours at night.
10. Cultivate a habit of going out with family, friends or engage
in creative habits, go to a spa, do yoga or just about anything
that would take the stress out.
I would be happy to answer any other queries you might have.

[www.keralites.net] RELIANCE JIO

The good, the bad, the ugly: 5 things you must know before you buy Jio SIM
reliance
Mukesh Ambani, on Thursday announced the launch of Reliance Jio and changed the telecom landscape of India forever. The announcements were no less than wish-fulfilment for a section of Indians who either never tasted the internet or those who lamented the scarcity (read high data cost). Free calls for life, cheap data rates, available to anyone for free until December 31; what else do we want? But before you jump with joy, here are a few important things you must know about the Reliance Jio SIM:
Firstly, check your handset's compatibility. As Jio is a 4G-only service, handsets not 4G-enabled, will not work. Get yourself a new one.
The Jio SIM cards will be available from 5 September and have no cost attached. In simple terms, they are FREE. Not just that, Jio's Data, Voice, Video and the full bouquet of Jio applications and content will be available for users for no charge, till 31 December, 2016. Post that, customers will be charged for data only. Voice calls will be free to any network across the country with no roaming charges. Tariff plans start at Rs 149 and will go up to Rs 5,000.
After 31 December, the cost for data is Rs 50 per GB. Here's some good news for students - they will get 25% more data when the commercial plans are rolled out.
To call from Reliance Jio, you will have to install an app called Jio Join. This app will use use service providers' interconnecting interface. And here's the glitch - other telecom providers might not be wholeheartedly supporting this venture that might lead to call failure.
To get your hands on a Jio SIM, the easiest way is to buy Lyf handsets but if you have a compatible handset and want just the SIM, you will need your Aadhar card.
Not just Jio SIM, Reliance has also announced a new line-up of affordable 4G LTE-capable Lyf smartphones, starting at Rs 2,999 and a price cut for its 4G LTE personal router called JioFi. The Jio-Fi Wi-Fi router will now be available at Rs 1,999.
What is JioFi?
The JioFi is a wireless router that can be used as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to share internet with other Wi-Fi enabled devices. The device is backed by a 2,300mAh battery which is rated to deliver up to 6 hours of battery life on a single charge. What could be its best feature is that it can connect 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices and one on USB.
