Russian Couple Adopted An Orphaned Bear 23 Years Ago, And They Still Live Together

Meet Stepan, a domesticated bear who lives with his humans Svetlana and Yuriy Panteleenko in Moscow, Russia. The Panteleenkos adopted Stepan when he was just a 3-month-old orphaned cub. He was found by hunters in a forest all alone and in a very bad condition, so Svetlana and Yuriy decided to give him a home.

23 years later, Stepan has grown into a loving bear who helps around the house by watering plants and loves watching TV with his humans. "He absolutely loves people and is a really sociable bear – despite what people might think, he is not aggressive at all," said Mrs Panteleenko. "We have never been bitten by Stepan."

Stepan eats 25kg of fish, vegetables and eggs every day! But the goofball manages to stay in shape thanks to his love for football. He also keeps himself busy with acting in films and posing for photoshoots.

I am forwarding an article on what is called the Abilene paradox by which a group of people acts in contradiction of the majority sentiments.

I have a friend who is an atheist but dare not declare his atheism for fear that atheism may upset his relationship with others and so he goes along with the religious ways of his relatives and friends. In all probability there are many in his group of friends and relations who thinks like him. Consequently the group as a whole may seem religious whereas the individuals may not be so religious. There are situations when the opinions of the majority may be opposite to that of the group as a whole.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene_paradox In an Abilene paradox a group of people collectively decide on a course of action that is counter to the preferences of many (or all) of the individuals in the group.^[1]^[2] It involves a common breakdown of group communication in which each member mistakenly believes that their own preferences are counter to the group's and, therefore, does not raise objections. A common phrase relating to the Abilene Paradox is a desire not to "rock the boat." This differs fromgroupthink in that the Abilene paradox is characterized by an inability to manage agreement.^[3]

On my birthday a couple of years back, I wanted to take my family out for dinner. I asked my wife where we can go. Knowing that I like Gujarati food, she immediately said: "Let's go to Agashiye - The Terrace Restaurant."

My son and daughter both nodded in agreement. On return my son said: "I wish Pappa had taken us to Mainland China – he loves Chinese food." "Or at least to Shere-E-Punjab for the wonderful tandoori chicken" added my daughter. "Yes, I too would have loved to go Mainland China", I said.

_My wife looked surprised: "But didn't we all unanimously agree to go to Agashiye," she asked._

I said sheepishly "I didn't want you to feel bad." And both my children nodded in agreement. Here were four people who of their own volition would not have gone to 'Agashiye - The Terrace Restaurant, but collectively agreed to go there.

This also happens in the corporate world. This is the Abilene Paradox. Prof. Jerry Harvey calls it *"The Inability to Manage Agreement".*

*The Abilene Paradox occurs when a group of people collectively decide on a course of action that is contrary to the preferences of most of the individuals in the group.*

Prof. Harvey states in his paper 'The Abilene Paradox': *"Organizations frequently take actions in contradiction to what they really want to do and therefore defeat the very purpose they are trying to achieve".* This is the _inability to manage agreement._

He adds: *"The inability to manage agreement, not the inability to manage conflict, is the essential symptom that defines organizations caught in the web of the Abilene Paradox."*

In the corporate world, when the top boss throws an idea, the group immediately agrees. This is because everyone in the group thinks he would look stupid if he disagrees. Standing out as a lone voice is very embarrassing. This leads the group to decide on 'yes' when 'no' would have been the personal (and the correct) response of the majority.

I love this from _Ayn Rand_: *"If we have an endless number of individual minds who are weak, meek, submissive and impotent – who renounce their creative supremacy for the sake of the "whole" and accept humbly the 'whole's verdict' – we don't get a collective super-brain. We get only the weak, meek, submissive and impotent collection of minds."*

This is a truly BEAUTIFUL piece please read this at a slow pace, digesting every word and in leisure...do not hurry....this is a treasure...

For those lucky to still be blessed with your Mom, this is beautiful

For those of us who aren't, this is even more beautiful. For those who are moms, you'll love this.

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long way?" she asked.

And the guide said: "Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it.

But the end will be better than the beginning." But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years.

So she played with her children, and gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried,

"Nothing will ever be lovelier than this."

Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said,

"Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come."

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary.

But at all times she said to the children," *A little patience and we are there*." So the children climbed, and when they reached the top they said,

" *Mother, we would not have done it without you*."

And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up at the stars and said,"This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness.

Yesterday I gave them *courage*. Today, I ' ve given them *strength*."

And the next day came strange clouds, which darkened the earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said: " *Look up* . *Lift your eyes to the light* ."

And the children looked and saw above the clouds an everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness. And that night the Mother said,

"This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God."

And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent.

But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill, and beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide.

And mother said,"I have reached the end of my journey.

And now I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone, and their children after them."

And the children said,

"You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates."

And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said:

"We cannot see her but she is with us still.

A Mother like ours is more than a memory. *She is a living presence......" Your Mother is always with you* ....

She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street; she's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool hand on your brow when you're not well.

Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's crystallised in every teardrop.

She's the place you came from, your first home; and she's the map you follow with every step you take.

She's your first love and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate you'll. Not time, not space... not even death!

Preeti  is going to grow vegetables after a PhD :- 'We Indians have forgotten what is good for us. Foreigners say oats are good, so we say the same, arrey, we have oats since ages!'

'When I tell my mother we eat ragi biscuits, she says, "big deal, we used to eat it like sattu or porridge".'

Preeti, who is about to finish a PhD in Entomology, tells me that if a small farmer has one cow, a patch of land and saves his own seeds he can cultivate his own land and sustain his family.

The Navdanya seed bank has 2,000 varieties of seeds. Farmers that come for training here are shown how to store them in cane baskets lined with a mixture of cow urine, dung and soil.

"It's simple, once you store seeds that way they will never get infected by pathogens. You don't need all those harmful chemicals," she says, taking us around the farm, in a weathered pair of sneakers.

"We lost our traditional methods of farming to the Green Revolution. The thought was that you can't do farming without chemicals if you have to feed the masses, but what we were growing traditionally was so much healthier," explains Preeti.

I am told there are 37 varieties of cows in India. "And we are stuck with the Jersey (not native to India) cow because it gives more milk. These cows may produce less milk, but are drug resistant and provide good labour," says Preeti, caressing the vermi compost, with tiny earthworms wriggling in between her fingers. 

The natural manure made from kitchen and farm waste looks like used tea leaves and is a wonderful nutrient for the soil.

Everything that comes from the 60 acre farm is recycled. Most of the food served comes from the farm itself. Navdanya has a staff of over 35, has 122 seed banks in 18 states and has a large community of farmer members.

The organic farm also serves as a model for small farmers -- so that a farmer with a tiny patch of land can see how to make best use of it.
