Your mindset is as bad as your language which reflect your education and culture. Earlier you got flak from many Keralites for abusing Keralites as a whole, but you have not improved

As being no authority on Hindu scriptures, I invited a discussion on the topic from persons who know about the scriptures and you reply provocatively. Now I challenge your knowledge about Hindu scriptures. Can you quote from any ancient Hindu scripture  prescribing that elephants must be used  in temple festivals? If it is there, why elephants are not being used in temple festivals in other parts of India, especially in the north. You talk about tradition, earlier there were  sacrifices (Guruti) of animals and even human beings,  why it has been stopped. Age old traditions should change if it  it is not conducive to the welfare of the people.

I am no one to advocate for stopping elephants at festivals. I do not go for temple festivals to be trampled by rogue elephants and none among the 220 people who were killed by elephants during the last three years was my relative or friend. I do not care if you will be one among the 220 in the coming two years; but I share the grief of the relatives of the innocents who lost their lives to the elephants and am concerned that many more will be loosing their lives likewise in the coming days.

YES, Elephants are must for temple festivals. It is not the regular feature, some time it happened, but it does not means, you stop so long long tradition only for this incident.
Recently a fire broke-out in Brazil Club and app. 300 people died ( not 3) and more then 500 injured, what will you do? will you stop club or stop using the fire? This is your absolutey useless question for debit. An empty vessel sound much.

In today's news also three people have been killed due to elephants getting wild at a temple festival. In this context, opinions from knowledgeable persons  as to whether elephants are a must for  temple festivals are solicited.

കൊച്ചി: ഇക്കുറി ഉത്സവകാലം തുടങ്ങിയശേഷം സംസ്ഥാനത്താകെ ആനകള്‍ ഇടഞ്ഞോടിയത് തൊണ്ണൂറ്റിയേഴിടത്ത്. രോഗവും അവശതയുംമൂലം ആനകള്‍ കുഴഞ്ഞുവീണത് രണ്ടിടത്ത്. 2003 ലെ സംസ്ഥാന നാട്ടാന പരിപാലനചട്ടത്തില്‍ വെള്ളംചേര്‍ത്ത് ആന ഉടമകള്‍ക്കും ബുക്കിങ് ഏജന്റുമാര്‍ക്കും അനുകൂലമായ വ്യവസ്ഥകളോടെ ആനയുടമകൂടിയായ വനംമന്ത്രി ഈ വര്‍ഷം പുറത്തിറക്കിയ ചട്ടങ്ങളാണ് നാട്ടാനകളുടെ ജീവന്‍ അപകടത്തിലാക്കുന്നത്.
 
സിനിമാതാരം ജയറാമിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള കണ്ണന്‍ എന്നയാന കഴിഞ്ഞയാഴ്ച പറവൂര്‍ ദക്ഷിണ മൂകാംബിക ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ കുഴഞ്ഞുവീണു. പൂഞ്ഞാറിലുള്ള അക്ബര്‍ എന്ന ആന ദീര്‍ഘനേരത്തെ കഠിനാധ്വാനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായി തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ ശ്രീപൂര്‍ണത്രയീശ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും കുഴഞ്ഞുവീണു. കടുത്ത ക്ഷയ രോഗബാധയാലാണ് കണ്ണന്‍ കുഴഞ്ഞുവീണത്. പ്രായം 85 ആയ "പാലാ ഗംഗാധരനെ" തൊടുപുഴ അറക്കുളം ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ എഴുന്നുള്ളിപ്പിന് എത്തിച്ചതും വിവാദമായി.
 
60 വയസ്സിനുമേല്‍ പ്രായമുള്ള ആനകള്‍ക്ക് വിശ്രമം അനുവദിക്കണമെന്ന് വ്യവസ്ഥയുള്ളതാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവങ്ങള്‍ കൊടുമ്പിരികൊണ്ടു തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുമ്പേ പീഡനങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഗമായി ആനയോട്ടങ്ങള്‍ പതിവായതും ആശങ്കയ്ക്കിടയാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. തൃശൂര്‍ ചെമ്പൂത്ര, കല്ലട പൊറത്തിശേരി, പെരുമ്പാവൂര്‍ കൂടുമഠം ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ 97 ആനയിടച്ചിലുകളാണ് ഇതിനകം ഉണ്ടായത്.
 
ഉത്സവകാലത്തെ വമ്പന്‍ കൊയ്ത്ത് ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ട് ആനയുടമകള്‍ക്കും ബുക്കിങ് ഏജന്റുമാര്‍ക്കും അനുകൂലമായ വ്യവസ്ഥകളോടെ തിരക്കിട്ട് പുറത്തിറക്കിയ പുതിയ നാട്ടാന പരിപാലനചട്ടമാണ് ഇവിടെ വില്ലന്‍. 2012 ഡിസംബര്‍ 18നാണ് ചട്ടത്തിന്റെ കരട് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. 20ന് അന്തിമചട്ടം അംഗീകരിച്ച് വിജ്ഞാപനം ഇറക്കി. 2003ലെ പ്രധാന വ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ പലതും ഇതിലില്ല.
 
എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്ന ആനകളുടെ ആരോഗ്യനില സംബന്ധിച്ച് ദിവസവും വെറ്ററിനറി ഡോക്ടറുടെ സര്‍ട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റ് വേണമെന്നായിരുന്നു പഴയ വ്യവസ്ഥ. നിലവില്‍ അത് 14 ദിവസത്തിലൊന്ന് എന്നാക്കി മാറ്റി. ഇതുമൂലം ക്ഷയംപോലെ ഗുരുതര രോഗബാധയുള്ള ആനകളുടെ ആരോഗ്യനില അടിക്കടി പരിശോധിക്കാനാകുന്നില്ല.
 
ആനകളെ ജില്ലകടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്‍ അതത് കലക്ടര്‍മാര്‍, റേഞ്ച് ഓഫീസര്‍, ഡിവൈഎസ്പി, സര്‍ക്കിള്‍ ഇന്‍സ്പെക്ടര്‍ എന്നിവരുടെ അനുമതി വേണമെന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥയും മാറ്റി. ഇതുമൂലം ഏതു നേരത്തും എവിടേക്കും ആനകളെ കൊണ്ടുപോകാം.
 
കേന്ദ്രചട്ടം അനുസരിച്ച് ദിവസം 20 കിലോമീറ്ററിലധികം ആനകളെ നടത്തരുത്. ഇവിടെ അത് 30 കിലോമീറ്ററാക്കി.
 
മൂന്നുമണിക്കുര്‍ എഴുന്നള്ളിച്ചാല്‍ 12 മണിക്കൂര്‍ വിശ്രമം അനുവദിക്കണമെന്നുണ്ട്. വനം മന്ത്രിയുടെ പുതിയ വ്യവസ്ഥപ്രകാരം വിശ്രമസമയം ആറു മണിക്കൂറായി ചുരുക്കി.
 
ഇതെല്ലാം ആനകളുടെ ജീവന്‍ അപകടത്തിലാക്കിയെന്ന് ആനപ്രേമികള്‍ പരാതിപ്പെടുന്നു. ആനകളെ വാഹനങ്ങളില്‍ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിലാണ് കൂടുതല്‍ ഇളവ് അനുവദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. എത്ര കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വേണമെങ്കിലും ഒറ്റയടിക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകാം. മോട്ടോര്‍വാഹന വകുപ്പിന്റെ പെര്‍മിറ്റുള്ള വണ്ടിയിലാകണമെന്നു പറയുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും വണ്ടിക്കു മുന്നില്‍ നാലും പിന്നില്‍ എട്ടും ചക്രങ്ങള്‍ വേണമെന്ന നിബന്ധന പാലിക്കുന്നില്ല. വനംമന്ത്രിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള ആന ഉടമാ സംഘത്തിന്റെ ഇടപെടല്‍മൂലം വാഹനവകുപ്പ് നടപടി എടുക്കുന്നില്ല. ഏജന്റുമാര്‍വഴിയാണ് ഉടമകള്‍ ആനകളെ ഉത്സവത്തിന് നല്‍കുന്നത്. ബുക്കിങ് അനുസരിച്ച് ഓരോ സ്ഥലത്തും ആനയെ എത്തിക്കാന്‍ ഉടമാസംഘം 70 ലോറികളും തയ്യാറാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വാടകയ്ക്കു പുറമെ 10,000 രൂപ ജാമ്യവും വാങ്ങിയാണ് വണ്ടി നല്‍കുന്നത്. കേസും മറ്റ് വ്യവഹാരങ്ങളും നേരിട്ടുകൊള്ളാമെന്ന ഉറപ്പിലാണത്രെ ജാമ്യത്തുക വാങ്ങുന്നത്. ഇതെല്ലാം മുതലാക്കി പരമാവധി സാമ്പത്തിക നേട്ടം ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ട് ആനകളുടെ പ്രായവും ആരോഗ്യനിലയും പരിഗണിക്കാതെ കഠിനാധ്വാനം ചെയ്യിക്കുകയാണ് ബുക്കിങ് ഏജന്റുമാര്.

The mridangam prodigy who set the stage on fire at 9


Rohan Krishnamurthy

It was not expected of a young boy growing up in a small town in America to pick up an instrument like the Mridangam to play but then that was what Rohan Krishnamurthy did when he was an 8 year old.

It was also unexpected of the son of a University Professor and accountant to take up music as his profession. But then the 25 year old chose to do his PhD in Musicology at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.

Other than numerous awards, he also has a patent in the US for a new design for the Mridangam.

Rohan was in Chennai recently on a Fellowship as a part of his dissertation and also to participate in the yearlyMargazhimusic festival. He spoke torediff.comon his journey as a musician.

Childhood in America

I grew up, did my school and college, and also learnt music in a small town called Kalamazoo in south west Michigan. I moved to New York four years ago to pursue my PhD.

My father is a professor in Geo and Environmental Science, and my mother is an accountant but my entire family is musical. All of us are very much interested in Carnatic music but no one had the opportunity to pursue it professionally. I was always interested in drums and percussion but somehow got fascinated by the Mridangam.

Luckily there was a Mridangam to learn on at home. My father had bought it from Kerala. He wanted to learn from Damodaran Srinivasan, a Mridangam teacher who was in town for a couple of years as a graduate student at the University. Somehow, his training fizzled out. So, there was this instrument and also the teacher, and one day, I asked my parents whether I could learn the Mridangam.

I was 8 years old then. Nobody thought I would take it up very seriously. I myself wonder why I took it up seriously. Perhaps the sound, the exposure to the instrument, the rhythmic aspect, and the instrument itself attracted me. It is an unusual instrument for a person who was growing up in America.

Learning Mridangam through telephone

But after a couple of months of learning, my teacher moved to Massachusetts for work, and there was no Mridangam teacher in a 300-mile radius. So, my teacher suggested I learn through speakerphone. Remember this was before Skype and virtual lessons started. Fortunately for me, before he left, he had given me a very strong foundation.

Soon, my e-classes started; he played over the phone and I translated it into scripts and practised. There were days when I practised 5 to 6 hours. I was that passionate. I continued learning through speakerphone for almost a couple of years and it actually worked out really well. It was quite a landmark in my musical journey.

On stage at age 9

In 1996, I happened to meet the legendary Mridangam player Sri Guruvayoor Dorai when he came on a concert tour to the US, and also visited Kalamazoo. My parents and I went to his concert and met him before the concert. Though we were meeting him for the first time, something clicked. He asked me, do you want to sit on the stage with me? I agreed, though I was not familiar with sitting on the stage. I remember I went up wearing my shoes! He then asked me to remove my shoes. The concert lasted five hours and all through the time, I was with him, doingthaalam. He was so impressed with my dedication that he offered to teach me when I came to Chennai next.

The next summer, in 1997, I was in Chennai to take lessons from him directly. I have been taking lessons from him for the last 15 years. Sometimes I come here to take lessons, or when he comes to the US, he often stays with us for a month or so, so that I could learn from him. I never had the luxury of having a teacher in the same city. But I used to practise hours and hours everyday. Also, my parents used to take me to all the concerts in the near vicinity.
