[www.keralites.net] Nature: Top 10 Smelliest Plants

There are some huge and foul smelling plants out there. Here’s a list of a few of the most interesting.

10. Western Skunk Cabbage

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This plant gets its name from the skunk-like odour it lets off to the entire surrounding area. The smell can even be noticed in very old, dried out specimens. The foul smell attract pollinators, beetles and other insects. It’s found in damp areas such as swamps and wooded areas.

9. Voodoo Lily

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This large lily gives off a smell similar to a rotting carcass in order to attract Lucilia flies and other insects. The plant traps them for a full day and night then releases them with lots of pollen.

8. Jack the Pulpit

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
Above the male flowers there is a ring of hairs that act as an insect trap. The pollinators get trapped and covered in the plant’s pollen as they try to escape.

All parts of the plant can cause an allergic reaction and some parts give off heat and odour to attract insects.

7. Dead Horse Arum Lily

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This ornamental plant is native to the Mediterranean region and gives off a smell of carrion to attract blowflies and other insects. It’s a rare thermogenic plant, which means it can raise its temperature to attract even more insects.

6. Hydnora Africana

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This is a parasitic plant that grows on the roots of the Euphorbiceae species that grows underground in the deserts of South Africa.

The flesh-coloured flower emerges from the soiland gives off a smell of faeces to attract pollinators such as dung beetles and carrion flies. The flower will trap the beetles that enter so they can cover themselves in pollen. Then when the flower fully opens again they are allowed to leave.

5. Star Flowers

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
These succulents grow amazing hairy flowers that give off the smell of rotting flesh. They blooms are very big and the larger the species the more pungent the scent. The hairs on the flower are there to resemble a layer of mould that grows on rotting meat.

Blowflies act as pollinators and a lot of flies will actually lay their eggs inside the flower, as they would with a rotting carcass.

4. Carrion Flowers

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
There are a number of flowers that look and smell like rotting meat in order to attract insect that will pollinate them. A lot of species will trap the insects after luring them in, letting them go only when they’ve collected enough pollen. However, carrion flowers don’t reward the insects that pollinate them with nectar like most other flowers.

3. Talipot Palm

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This tree is around six to eight metres tall and at the top branches out with loads of little flowers. It only flowers once in its life span, when it’s about 30 to 80 years old. It takes about a year for the flowers to become fruit and after fruiting it then dies. It smells sweet and the sap is used for palm wine.

2. Rafflesia arnoldii

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This is the largest flower in the world and it grows on the floor of rainforests. It doesn’t have the usual parts â€" such as leaves, roots or stem â€" as other flowers because it doesn’t need them. It gives off a stench of rotting flesh, which attracts carrion flies.

Beforeit flowers it is almost invisible, it then grows into a cabbage-like plant that opens into the huge flower that only lasts for a few days. There’s a lot that’s not known about how the plants reproduce as scientists are struggling to recreate the environment in which the plant lives. Because of this, they haven’t been able to fully study them.

1. Titan Arum

Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
This huge plant is often referred to as the corpse flower. It's three metres tall when fully grown and emits a horrible stench that people flock to from around the world. It takes a long time to reach full size and when it gets there it will begin to heat up to somewhere around human body temperature. This helps to intensify its smell, which attracts pollinators.

It can take years for the flower to bloom so when it does people visit to see the magnificent, and smelly, plant in action.

[www.keralites.net] Angelina Jolie On Malala

'We are all Malala': Why Angelina Jolie felt compelled to tell her children about brave 14-year-old Pakistani activist's tragic shooting

By Amelia Proud

Angelina Jolie has composed a beautiful essay about how she discussed the tragic shooting of 14-year-old Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai with her brood of children children.

'I felt compelled to share Malala's story with my children. It was difficult for them to comprehend a world where men would try to kill a child whose only "crime" was the desire that she and others like her be allowed to go to school,' Angelina wrote in the Daily Beast.

Beautiful tribute: Angelina Jolie has penned an essay about the moment she told her children of Malala's brave stance. 'Our 8-year-old [Pax] suggested that the world build a statue for Malala, and fittingly create a reading nook near it.

'Our 6-year-old [Shiloh] asked the practical question of whether Malala had any pets, and if so, who would take care of them? She also asked about Malala's parents and if they were crying. 'We decided that they were, but not only for their daughter, also for children around the world denied this basic human right.'

She continued: 'The following morning, the news showed pictures of children across Pakistan holding up Malala's picture at vigils and demonstrations, and praying in schools.

Keeping them informed: The actress and UN ambassador wanted her children to know about Malala and other children who denied their human rights

'My son worried that girls were going to be shot for standing up for Malala. I told him that they were aware of the danger, but publicly supporting her reflects how much Malala means to them. Malala's courage reminded all Pakistanis how important an education is. Her bravery inspired their own.

'Still trying to understand, my children asked, "Why did those men think they needed to kill Malala?" I answered, "because an education is a powerful thing."' Malala was airlifted to Birmingham, England, where she's said to be in a stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The hospital confirmed Malala had a 'comfortable' night and doctors had been impressed by Malala's resilience. But the Pakistani teenager needs 'prolonged care' to help her recover from the physical and psychological effects of the attack and it seems likely her treatment will take more than six months.

It is unclear whether it will ever be safe enough for Malala, whose name means 'grief-stricken', to return home. It is likely she will remain in Britain.

UN ambassador Jolie also says she hopes Malala will be in contention for a Nobel Peace Prize

Ramjit admits that as proud as he is of having two healthy sons at his age, his neighbours are more jealous of his sex drive.

Ramjit admits that as proud as he is of having two healthy sons at his age, his neighbours are more jealous of his sex drive

€I'm healthy and I enjoy sex with my wife. I think it's very important for a husband and wife to have sex regularly and when she asks I will go on all night but for the sake of my child I've put our needs aside for now.'Father-of-two Ramjit claims that a daily diet of almonds, butter and milk kept him sexually active.

He said: I care for my wife and I give her everything she needs. She is a very happy woman.' When Ramjit met second wife Shakuntala, he had been a widower for 25 years. The pair met 22 years ago on a rainy morning at a Muslim shrine, Ramjit asked her to come home with him and she has never left. 'She didn't have any family or friends around, and I wanted to help her,' he explains. 'I took her under my wing and taught her some yoga and we fell in love. Many of my past girlfriends had died so I had never married and then I asked Shakuntala to be my wife.'

Shakuntala believes she would have been dead by now if it was not for Ramjit's caring ways. She said: It doesn't matter how old he is, I love him and I care for him dearly even, though he shouts at me sometimes. He doesn't seem old to me, he can make love like any 25-year-old man, even better.
