Despite the cost, old-age homes appear attractive
Clad in a dhoti, vest and shalya – all in white, vibhuti smeared on his forehead, Rajan* (68) is like any other senior citizen you would meet in the city. It is only when you hear the native of Ramanagara speak do you instantly perceive his army background. Having served in the defence throughout his life, he came to Bengaluru after retirement, hoping for a peaceful life with his son and daughter-in-law. But that was not to be.

"Both of them are busy with work. Due to my failing health, I needed someone to help me with bathing, medication, food, etc and they did not have time for that," he said.

Mr. Rajan decided that it would be best for both him as well as his son's family if he shifted to a home for the aged.

His son agreed, even taking care of the expenditure – a whopping Rs. 18,000 per month.

"The home takes care of my medical needs, provides good food and has helped me deal with loneliness. I don't feel alone anymore as there are many others like me here who have to live away from their family due to different circumstances. I also feel secure here due to the community-style lifestyle," says Mr. Rajan.

Not many senior citizens are willing to take the route he took for reasons ranging from financial implications to unwillingness to surrender to what is often viewed as the 'last resort'. But those who have say they feel safer and less lonely.

Sarita* (60) shifted to a similar facility after a few visits for treatment for schizophrenia, though her family lives in the same city. Her family shrugged off its responsibility when she was diagnosed with the disease.

"The home takes care of me, provides me with a comfortable place to stay and fulfils all my medical requirements. In the light of the increasing number of cases of abandonment and violence against the elderly, this old age home is almost like a safe haven," she says.

Though most such homes come at a cost, a few lodge the elderly, most of who are neglected or abandoned, for free.

Apart from these, well-heeled senior citizens are being beckoned by an increasing number of 'retirement homes' that promise various facilities, including medical assistance.

[www.keralites.net] Amla Ruia A rich matriarch’s quest to quell the thirst of people turns into a mission

Amla Ruia  A rich matriarch's quest to quell the thirst of people turns into a mission
The otherwise charitable woman suddenly realised that sending money and clothing to victims of disasters was not a permanent solution. She set out of her wealthy home with a mission to create water sources and today her Aakar Charitable Trust has built 350 check dams, impacting 400 villages.

Ruia has involved the community in the successful initiative and makes them contribute 20 per cent of the cost of a check dam. Her trust funds the balance 80 per cent money. "The villagers take ownership of the dams when they invest the money. It benefits them for generations if maintained properly," says Ruia, who is now 73-years old.

Her check dams have brought back prosperity to the villages. Farmers are growing three crops a year, cultivable land in the villages has increased, farm workers who migrated to cities in search of jobs have returned home, women have been spared the drudgery of finding water, girls have started attending schools, and health and hygiene levels in the villages has improved.

Carrot Juice for high cholesterol
Tatiana Zanin - Nutritionist

The carrot provides numerous health benefits, it is rich in vitamins and minerals and its main benefit the cleanser and tonic effect it has on the liver. When the carrot juice is taken at least three times a week, helps the liver to remove excess bile and fat, and when the level of fat is reduced, also reduces cholesterol.

In addition, to improve the fight against high cholesterol is very important to avoid eating too much fatty or fried foods, and processed foods, as they contain a lot of fat that contributes to the increase in bad cholesterol. Drinking about 2 liters of water per day and physical activity to at least 3 times a week, also help to reduce cholesterol and improve the effects of the juice.

Ingredients
4 carrots
1 lemon juice
1 tablespoon (tea) sugar

Method of preparation
To prepare this home remedy just beat all ingredients in a blender and strain to follow.

If you drink more than 5 cups of juice per week, you'll probably notice that the skin will have an orange tone.
But do not fear, it is just toxins being eliminated from your body.
To reduce this effect, simply reduce the dose ingested juice.
