[www.keralites.net] HOW TO LIVE AND DIE

HOW TO LIVE AND DIE
How To Live & Die

I've often thought about what it is that makes people happy—what one has to do in order to achieve happiness.
1- First and foremost is good health. If you do not enjoy good health, you can never be happy. Any ailment, however trivial, will deduct something from your happiness.
2- Second, a healthy bank balance. It need not run into crores, but it should be enough to provide for comforts, and there should be something to spare for recreation—eating out, going to the movies, travel and holidays in the hills or by the sea. Shortage of money can be demoralising. Living on credit or borrowing is demeaning and lowers one in one's own eyes.
3- Third, your own home. Rented places can never give you the comfort or security of a home that is yours for keeps. If it has garden space, all the better. Plant your own trees and flowers, see them grow and blossom, and cultivate a sense of kinship with them.
4- Fourth, an understanding companion, be it your spouse or a friend. If you have too many misunderstandings, it robs you of your peace of mind. It is better to be divorced than to be quarrelling all the time.
5- Fifth, stop envying those who have done better than you in life—risen higher, made more money, or earned more fame. Envy can be corroding; avoid comparing yourself with others.
6- Sixth, do not allow people to descend on you for gossip. By the time you get rid of them, you will feel exhausted and poisoned by their gossip-mongering.
7- Seventh, cultivate a hobby or two that will fulfill you—gardening, reading, writing, painting, playing or listening to music. Going to clubs or parties to get free drinks, or to meet celebrities, is a criminal waste of time. It's important to concentrate on something that keeps you occupied meaningfully.
8- Eighth, every morning and evening devote 15 minutes to introspection. In the mornings, 10 minutes should be spent in keeping the mind absolutely still, and five listing the things you have to do that day. In the evenings, five minutes should be set aside to keep the mind still and 10 to go over the tasks you had intended to do.
9- Ninth, don't lose your temper. Try not to be short-tempered, or vengeful. Even when a friend has been rude, just move on.
10- Above all, when the time comes to go, one should go like a Person without any regret or grievance against anyone.

Service Above Self: For 29 Years, This Delhi Org Has Been Treating the Needy For Free!

Kamaljeet Singh

This article is about an organisation formally established in 1992, called Veerji Ka Dera, in Delhi. This organisation comprising volunteers come together to provide medical assistance to the needy.
Kamaljeet Singh, one of the founders of this organisation.

It was Tirlochan Singh, who started this in 1989. When it began, the idea was to provide medical assistance and distribute food to all those who needed it.

Eventually, it took on a larger shape and is now being run by his sons, Brigadier Premjit Singh Panesar, who retired recently, and Kamaljeet Singh.

On an average, they nurse between 350 to 400 persons in need of medical assistance each day.

Speaking about some of the doctors who come each day to treat the patients, Kamaljeet says, "We have had doctors associated with us for over two decades, and it was only upon their demise that the association ended. As of now, we have Dr Tahir and Dr D C Aggarwal who come and help us."

The doctors tend to the patients sitting on the footpath. There are no fancy cubicles or clinics.

"The patients who come to us are mostly migrant workers and daily wage labourers from various parts. They cannot afford to go to big hospitals and clinics to get treated," says Kamaljeet.

The organisation also runs a 65-bed hospital at Dashrathpuri where destitute patients are treated.

The volunteers also get patients admitted to AIIMS and DDU hospital as and when needed.

Besides this, the volunteers can also be found at Vridh Ashram at Dashrathpuri near Janakpuri, near Rajdoot Hotel in Nizamuddin, at the Sai Baba Temple at Lodhi Road, Keshavpuram Mandi near Tilak Nagar, and Yamuna Pushta near ISBT, Kashmere Gate.

The doctors and volunteers associated with this organisation are providing service above self.

[www.keralites.net] Ajay Bahadur Singh Tea Seller- in Odisha Helps 18 Poor Students Make It To Medical School [1 Attachment]

Ajay Bahadur Singh Tea Seller-Turned-Mentor in Odisha Helps 18 Poor Students Make It To Medical School!

There is something about tea-sellers in this country. This is a story about one such tea-seller, Ajay Bahadur Singh. Having nurtured dreams of becoming a doctor, he is now working towards helping underprivileged and deserving students live their dreams.

Unfortunately for Ajay, his economic and financial condition did not allow him to pursue a degree in medicine.

In a report published in the Financial Express, Ajay says, "I started the initiative in 2010. Initially, two-three students came for coaching and students started qualifying for a medical college in 2012. This year, 18 students have been selected in the medical entrance examination."

This programme that is run by Ajay in Odisha is aptly called 'Jindagi' (Life), and this year a total of 18 students from this programme have been admitted into medical colleges.

During the time that these students spend preparing for the examination, Ajay takes care of the food, boarding, and coaching for 20 deserving students.

He says that he draws inspiration from Anand Kumar and his Super 30.

One such student, Twinkle, a flower seller outside the famous Jagannath temple shared her story with the publication. She says, "I faced innumerable difficulties in life. We are poverty-stricken. But my desire and the help of Jindagi has helped me to qualify in the medical entrance test."

A group of 15 teachers imparts coaching to the 20 aspirants.

Adyanta Science College, which is affiliated to the Odisha government, helps in funding this initiative.

They collect fees from about 600 students studying in the college and use a part of this to run Jindagi.

The Better India wishes this initiative much more success.

[www.keralites.net] Kankaria Nocturnal Zoo opens in Ahmedabad - Video SPOT NOCTURNAL CREATURES LIKE LEOPARD DURING DAY

Kankaria Nocturnal Zoo opens in Ahmedabad - Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jHGA2fNTkE     video  5 min 36 seconds

Visitors to the Kankaria zoo have often complained that during their visit they found animals like leopards, jackals or hyenas, which are nocturnal animals, dozing or inactive. To address this, zoo authorities have launched a nocturnal zoo, the first of its kind in Gujarat, where through management of light the nocturnal animals will be induced to remain active during day (when visitors come) and sleep during night.

Zoo superintendent R K Sahu said nocturnal animals like leopards, jackals and hyenas among others have already been shifted to the new house. Other species that will be housed there include jungle cat, bat, hedgehog, porcupine, palm civet, and flying fox among others, he said.

The house has been constructed over four years across an area of 9,000 square metre at the project cost of Rs 17.5 crore.

The house will have soundproof glass enclosures that will prevent zoo animals from hearing the sound of visitors, but visitors will be able to hear the sounds made by the animals through microphones installed in each enclosure. If a leopard roars, a visitor will be able to hear, but if a visitor shouts, the leopard will be unable to hear that.
