[www.keralites.net] Foods that fight depression

 Foods That Fight Depression
Feelings of sadness and depression can creep in out of nowhere. One day you may wake up feeling like a different person than you did the day before. It's hard to make it through the day, everything seems negative, you feel like a huge weight is on your shoulders, you feel uneasy, anxious, and hopeless – often for no obvious reason.
Most of the time people tend to go one of two ways when it comes to eating when they're depressed: overeating junk food for comfort, or avoiding food altogether. While neither of these tactics will truly relieve depression, there are some foods out there that can fight the depressive feelings and help bring you back to a state of peace.
First of all, to decipher which foods can come to the rescue, we must know – what is depression, chemically speaking? Well, according to Psych Central, "monoamines" are low in the brain during depressive episodes. Monoamines are mood-related chemicals like serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.
So if you're feeling depressed and you do, in fact, have an appetite, it would make sense to eat foods that can increase the above mentioned chemicals in your brain.
Here are a few foods that win the gold medal in the depression-fighting category:
Flaxseeds/Flaxseed oil - contains tryptophan and omega-3 fatty acids, which increases serotonin production. Put some ground up flaxseeds in your salad or oatmeal. You can also take flaxseed oil capsules.
Fish oils, salmon, tuna - high in omega-3s, both fish oil capsules and fish like salmon or tuna can increase your serotonin levels and lower anxiety levels. Sushi, anyone?Picture 4
Bananas - high in tryptophan for serotonin production. Eat 'em up.
Raw Cacao - we all know that chocolate can be a mood-lifter, but the sugar crash that comes with conventional chocolate can have the opposite effect on your mood. Eating raw chocolate (dairy-free, sweetened with agave nectar instead of sugar) is a much better choice. Check your local health food store, or try my all-time favorite brand, Fine and Raw.
raw chocolate
Watermelon: high in vitamin B6, which helps manufacture serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Choose watermelon over your regular dessert, or drink a tall glass of 100% watermelon juice. Yum!
Protein-rich foods like beans, eggs, and tofu - contains tryosine, which increases norepinephrine and contributes to positive mood.
Sunflower seeds – high in folic acid, a building block of serotonin and norepinephrine.
Spinach - another one for folic acid, omega-3s, and B vitamins. Fix yourself a big spinach salad or substitute spinach for whatever lettuce you use in sandwiches.spinach
Brown rice - Vitamins B1, B3 and folic acid. Brown rice is also a low-glycemic food that relseases glucose into the bloodstream gradually. A smarter, mood-lifting alternative to refined, white carbs.
Sweet Potatoes - help tryptophan go to work producing serotonin in the body by raising insulin levels. Sweet potatoes are a great alternative to white potatoes because they have a lower glycemic index, which means they don't cause a spike in blood sugar or the accompanying mood swings.
Quite the appetizing list! While depression is complicated and often mulit-faceted, these tasty additions to your diet may help to elevate the dark moods. Eat up and smile.

Raghava Lawrence not just a successful star, he's a got a big heart too 141 free heart surgeries.

On November 16, 2017, Raghava tweeted a message in which he shared the information about success of his trust's 141th open heart surgery.

[ Please read the miraculous cure of him by Swami Ragavendra. ( Mantralaya ) ]

Raghava Lawrence made his mark with his Muni series. Seen here, in a still from Kanchana 2.

Raghava Lawrence made his mark with his Muni series. A successful choreographer, he has crafted a perfect growth path for himself as an actor and a director. Now, we also know that he a man of big heart. Through his trust -- The Larencce Charitable Trust -- he has been helping people in need by providing for their healthcare.

On November 16, 2017, Raghava tweeted a message in which he shared the information about success of his trust's 141th open heart surgery. The patient here was one-year old Shivani, who was operated upon by doctors and is out of danger (and the hospital). He also called upon other such people, in dire need of help but who can't afford, to call his trust.

Some digging around led to interesting background facts about Raghava himself -- he suffered from brain tumour as a child and rarely went to school. His mother visited the temple of Raghavendra Swami and Lawrence believes that the blessings of the deity helped him beat the tumour. He became an ardent devotee and added its name to his name. But that was not all -- as he wasn't a person of privileged background, Lawrence worked as a car cleaner for fight master Super Subbarayan.

Superstar Rajinikanth once saw him dance and helped him join Dancers Union in Chennai. Impressed with his dancing skills, Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi offered him a chance to choreograph dances for his film Hitler. Pleased with the result, Chiranjeevi offered him Master as well.

[www.keralites.net] USE OF PHONE & SPINE

PLEASE READ AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH
Subject: USE OF PHONE & SPINE
This is what looking down at your phone does to your spine
For the sake of your spine, think about how you're looking at your phone.
HOW long do you think you could last with an eight-year old sitting on your head?
According to a new study by spine surgeon Dr Kenneth Hansraj looking down at our phones is the equivalent of having around 27 kgs worth of weight on your neck.
On average, our heads weigh 4-5kgs, but when we are looking down scrolling through Facebook, the gravitational pull is massively increased.
"As the head tilts forward the forces seen by the neck surges to 27 pounds (12kg) at 15 degrees, 40 pounds (18kg) at 30 degrees, 49 pounds (22kg) at 45 degrees and 60 pounds (27kg) at 60 degrees," Hansraj writes in the paper.
The further you look down, the more weight your neck feels. Source: Supplied
Having this sort of pressure on our necks, is of course not a good thing for our health, especially when the average person spends between two to four hours a day in this position.
In the paper, Dr Hansraj cited that good posture when looking at your phone is having your ears aligned with your shoulders and your shoulder blades back.
This will lower body stress, in comparison to poor posture which will stress the spine and possibly lead to early degradation.
It's not just staring down at your phone that is bad for you.
Studies have suggested that radiation from your phone can even cook your eyes.
By cooking, we mean that if your eyes are exposed to the kind of heat and radiation given off by phones for long enough, tiny bubbles can start to form in your eyes. This is a precursor to cataracts.
This happens due to your eyes inability to dissipate the heat into the rest of your body, essentially because it's mostly operating on its own up there.
Studies show that radiation from phones can damage a person's eyes.
Let's not forget how technology can ruin your sleep as well. This is mostly due to the type of 'blue' light that the screen on your phone, tablet or computer emits.
The light reduces the production of melatonin, our natural sleeping hormone which increases sleeping difficulties and causes more daytime sleepiness. To combat this, scientists recommend turning off all devices at least an hour before you go to sleep.
Insomnia? Blame your laptop.
Using your computer all day could also be a big contributor to why your hands and body are aching. Any repetitive movement can result in Repetitive Strain Syndrome and it can affect any part of the body.
But with all that typing, tapping and clicking, it's usually our hands and arms that suffer problems, with millions of people worldwide now developing RSI.
Symptoms include pain, muscle weakness, swelling, numbness and restricted mobility of the joint. It will typically increase after a long session of computer or device use, according to the health department.
The best cure is rest, continued use will make the problem worse.
Using a computer all day can cause Repetitive Strain Syndrome.
And finally, let's not forget those who listen to their music too loud.
About 37 per cent of hearing loss in Australia is caused by preventable noise exposure, acocording to HearNet.
And one in five teenagers today has some form of hearing loss - around 30 per cent more than in the 1990s.
Our exposure to dangerous noise levels through our headphones is on the increase, with Australians losing their hearing much earlier than previous generations.
The maximum acceptable exposure to noise over a day is 85 decibels - the equivalent of listening to the sound of traffic on the street from the footpath.
Our devices can reach up to 120dB. Osteopaths say that as a rule of thumb, you should only use devices at levels up to 60 per cent of maximum volume for a total of 60 minutes a day. If you can't hear what's going on around you, it's too loud.
Put down your phone!
iPhones, Androids and smartphones are everywhere but it's the holiday season, a time to spend with family and friends and take a break from ever-present screens. Unless, of course, you're one of the millions of phone addicts out there. In his latest song for the Guardian, Joe Stilgoe urges you to put down your phone and reconnect with the outside world.

[www.keralites.net] HOME REMEDIES FOR DEPRESSION

Ayurvedic Herbal Home Remedies for Depression
Depression is a very real and treatable illness. Depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. Depression is very common and affects as many as one in eight people in their teen years. Depressed mood is generally situational and reactive, and associated with grief, loss, or a major social transition. Sadness is a part of being human, a natural reaction to painful circumstances. All of us will experience sadness at some point in our lives. Depression, however, is a physical illness with many more symptoms than an unhappy mood. Depression affects people of every color, race, economic status, or age; however, it does seem to affect more females than males during adolescence and adulthood. It is usually starts between the ages of 15 and 30. It is much more common in women. Women can also get postpartum depression after the birth of a baby. Some people get seasonal affective disorder in the winter. Depression is one part of bipolar disorder. Depressive disorders come in different forms, just as is the case with other illnesses such as heart disease. This pamphlet briefly describes three of the most common types of depressive disorders. However, within these types there are variations in the number of symptoms, their severity, and persistence.
Another type of depression is bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness. It is characterized by cycling mood changes: severe highs (mania) and lows (depression). There is no single cause for depression. Many factors play a role including genetics, environment, medical conditions, life events, and certain thinking patterns that affect a person's reaction to events. Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list) that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. This condition is seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It usually happens during the winter. A less common type of SAD happens in the summer. Severity of symptoms varies with individuals and also varies over time. Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness. Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed. Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down". Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions. Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping.
