[www.keralites.net] CHINESE CARRIER

China's making major progress with its aircraft carrier tech

Say hello to China's first catapult-equipped carrier.

China Type 002 Aircraft Carrier

TYPE 002 CARRIER

This fan-made computer-generated image of the Type 002 by artist Nishikasaizoukan shows the craft's key features like catapults, J-15B fighters, and fixed-wing airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.

Though China launched its much-ballyhooed Type 001A aircraft carrier just a few months ago, the People's Liberation Army Navy is hardly resting on its laurels, instead making steady progress on technology for its second home-built carrier, the Type 002.

The Type 002 carrier, development for which is slated to wrap in 2020 or 2021, will be a 70,000-ton aircraft carrier with catapults designed to launch heavier aircraft.

CGT-60F Gas Turbine China

CGT-60F

The CGT-60F, seen here as a subscale model, is a class F turbine that can be used on warships like the Type 002 aircraft carrier.

And giant catapults aren't the only new tech in development. Pictured above, the CGT-60F is a heavy duty, F-class gas turbine (which typically have a power output of 170-230 megawatts) designed by Tsinghua University's Gas Turbine Research Center with the Dongfang Electric Group and Shanghai Electric Group. It's completely domestic design that exceeded expectations for cooling and temperature distribution—vital factors for large turbines. As such, the state-run China Daily suggested that the CGT-60F would be a suitable candidate to power a large warship, such as an aircraft carrier.

China Type 002 Aircraft Carrier Wuhan

TYPE 002 WUHAN

The carrier mockup at Wuhan, used for testing shipboard electronic systems like radars and comms, has been modified with multiple AESA radars.

Da Feng Cao

Additionally, the aircraft carrier mockup at Wuhan (which also hosted the electromagnetic test rig for the Type 055 destroyer) is modifying its island to include new electronic systems.

Previously modeled after the Liaoning's older island, the changes include the installation of an additional bridge deck, and new, flat paneled Type 346x series AESA radars—just like the Type 001A carrier, but with smaller AESA radars above the Type 346s.

The Type 002's island would likely have a similar multi-paneled radar system found on the Type 055 DDG's integrated mast.  Those smaller AESA radars could be used for targeting and fire control, allowing the Type 002 to datalink with missiles launched from aircraft and other ships, extending their range.

China Catapult Carrier J-15B

J-15B

The J-15B, seen on a catapult prior to launch at the Huangdicun naval air base in Liaoning. The Huangdicun base is testing both steam and EMALS catapults for installation on the Type 002 aircraft carrier.

Chinese Internet

China has also continued catapult testing at the Huangdicun. Obsessives may recall that earlier this summer, China launched the catapult-capable J-15T from the land-based electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), as well as debuted new steam catapults.

By putting both the J-15T and catapult through extensive testing, the pilots and aircrew of the Type 002 carrier will be able to move quickly toward complex operations when launched. What's more, a J-15 (serial number "111") was spotted in early July 2017 with a inflight refueling pod, slung under the fuselage centerline, between the engine nacelles. This kind of refueling would expand the range and flight times of current fighters.

J-31 Fighter Stealth Carrier China

GYRFALCON

The Shenyang "Gyrfalcon" J-31 stealth fighter, China's second stealth fighter program, is reported to have a possible carrier capable configuration, with folding wings and reinforced landing gear.

O+Nil

Additionally, the second prototype J-31 stealth fighter has made additional flights this summer, the most recent on July 25. This burst of activity gives credence to reports that Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-31's builders, is planning to create a third J-31 prototype with the capability to operate on catapult-equipped aircraft carriers.

The J-31, while smaller than the J-20 stealth fighter, has improved stealth and avionics capability on its second prototype. Plus, production versions are planned to be equipped with faster WS-17 engines, which could allow for supersonic flight without fuel-thirsty afterburners. Those putative J-31 fighters could prove to be stiff competitors in air combat with F-35C fighters of the U.S. Navy.

Type 003 Aircraft Carrier China

TYPE 003

This display at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution looks even further into the future. Here you can spot speculative features like catapults, J-20 fighters, and stealthy unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). The nuclear-powered Type 003 supercarrier likely won't enter service until after 2030.

Oedo Soldier

Looking beyond the Type 002, the Type 003 aircraft carrier could be a true supercarrier, with nuclear power and a 90,000-ton displacement. If official displays in China's military museum are any indication, the Type 003 would come with futuristic aircraft like stealthy drone bombers and sixth-generation fighters. It could also have enough electricity to power Chinese lasers and railguns currently under development.

[www.keralites.net] OBESITY

 Obesity
What is obesity?
Obesity is defined as a condition of excess bodyweight and fat. The size and number of fat cells increase in obese people. A person is said to be obese when the body weight is 20% or more above ideal body weight, which can be calculated by comparing his height and sex.
What are the causes?
Dietary and life style practices are directly related to obesity. The most important cause is the imbalance between the energy intake and output. Energy is obtained from the food one eats and is required to carry out the daily activities, and the body functions, which are going on even when one is sleeping. The extra energy which is not used by the body is stored as fat. Eating more than one need causes obesity because the excess energy supplied to the body gets converted into fat. On the expenditure side, if a person is physically less active then less energy is utilised and more is converted to fat.
Home, work and school are barriers to opportunities for active lifestyle. Children of obese parents are 10 times likely to be obese than those of non-obese parents. This is mostly environmental since the children and parents share the same dietary habits. Genes influence how the body burns calories or stores fat. In some rare cases, hormonal imbalance, such as overactivity of the adrenal glands or underactivity of the thyroid gland, can also cause obesity. Injury or inflammation of the hypothalamus can interfere with the appetite centre and thereby cause obesity.
What are the symptoms?
The signs of obesity include body fat and weight more than the ideal body weight.
What are the risks of obesity?
Obesity is a serious condition as it increases the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, joint pains, high blood pressure and some types of cancers such as colon, breast and uterine cancers. Obese people are also more prone to diseases and problems such as stroke, gall bladder disease, breathing problems (sleep apnoea syndrome), low back pain, swelling of the feet and ankles, imbalances and accidents. Obese people have a low self-esteem and they avoid company, which makes them insular and insecure.
How is it diagnosed?
Obesity is determined by measuring body weight and fat. There are different ways of calculating body fat. Body mass index (BMI) is one of the best methods used to measure body fat. BMI is calculated as the ratio of the weight in Kg and height in square metre. Guidelines define overweight as a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/square meter and obesity as a BMI greater than 30. The doctor may also suggest blood test for sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides. In case insufficient thyroid functioning (hypothyroidism) is suspected, the doctor will ask for a thyroid stimulating hormone test..
What is the treatment?
The simplest and the most basic principle is to reduce food intake,
especially the fat content, and increasing physical activity.
Increasing physical activity alone is not an easy way to lose weight
unless one combines it with a reduction of fat intake. Physical
activity includes walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, aerobics or any other household activity such as cleaning, washing, climbing stairs etc. The sense of well-being and weight loss motivates an individual to make changes in his or her diet as well. The best way of keeping a good control on ones dietary intake is to keep a daily diary, and writing down whatever one eats as one eats. Avoid high oil content in the curries and do not use butter on chappatis, which may be tasty without the fat. The doctor or health care provider evaluates the daily diet and plans a diet providing calories enough to maintain the weight below the ideal body weight.
Increase your physical; activity and reduce the intake of food. Your initial goal of weight loss therapy should be to reduce the bodyweight by 10% from baseline. With success, further weight loss can be attempted.Weight loss should be 1-2 kg for 6 months. Reducing dietary fat alone without reducing calories is not sufficient for weight loss. Reducing dietary fat along with dietary carbohydrates can help reduce calories.Weight maintenance program should be priory after 6 months.
In order to maintain one's weight, calories consumed should be equal to calories used. Energy balance is like a scale. When calories consumed are more than calories used, it results in weight gain. Let physical activity tip the scale in your favour. You can perform aerobic exercises 30 minutes a day thrice week. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
Certain medicines are also available for weight reduction. There are two main types of weight reducing drugs: one class decreases appetite while the other prevents dietary fat from being absorbed by the body. These drugs should be taken only with doctor"s advice, as there are a lot of side effects related with their use. Surgery to cure obesity should be undertaken as the last resort for people who are very obese, have tried all the other options available and have medical problems. The main surgical option is to have your stomach banded or stapled so that it cannot accommodate more food. Why not eat less voluntarily?
Few tips to bring about weight loss as well as ensuring good health:
Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grain products like wheat.
Increase the consumption of complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, millet (jowar) and barley (bajra)
Restrict refined products such as flour (maida) and its products such as bread, noodles, macaronis and pastas in regular diet
Restrict fat and cholesterol rich foods. Only non-vegetarian foods (like eggs and dairy products) are good sources of cholesterol, however saturated fatty acids present in butter, ghee, vanaspati and coconut get metabolised to cholesterol in our body
Reduce the amount of sugars consumed
Consume raw fruits and vegetables in form of salads and raitas in every meal. These provide adequate vitamins, minerals and fibre. Fibre is essential as it aids in digestion, has an effective role in managing obesity and cardiovascular problems
Limit salt intake
Have small portions of food at a time
Do not skip meals
Have regular meal timings
Do not eat while cooking and watching television
Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses) in a day
Exercise regularly. Do brisk walking at least for 20-40 minutes in a day
The best exercises that are sustainable and safe to loose weight are
aerobic exercises. Aerobic exercises usually involve vigorous exercises sustained over a period of several minutes and their effect is to increase the efficiency of the lungs, heart and blood circulation, which are collectively known as the aerobic system. Short and sharp bursts of activity which rely on the body"s reserves of oxygen do not produce a similar improvement. Exercises should increase strength and mobility and also aid relaxation. You can choose walking, swimming, bicycling as per your fitness level and increase gradually. You should plan on 20-minute sessions at least 3 times per week. Gradual changes in eating habits will help encourage a permanent lifestyle change. A slow weight loss of 1 or 2 pounds a week, until the desirable body weight is reached, is best.
Follow the above mentioned tips to lead a healthy and a happy life.
If you are more than 65kgs, you are overweight....

[www.keralites.net] ANOTHER ALZHEIMER'S DRUG FAILS

Another Alzheimer's Drug Fails: What Makes This Disease So Tough to Fight?

News Picture: Another Alzheimer's Drug Fails: What Makes This Disease So Tough to Fight?By Dennis Thompson
HealthDay Reporter
THURSDAY, Jan. 25, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- As more experimental drugs fail to stop Alzheimer's from destroying human memory, experts now wonder whether research into the devastating brain disease has been marching in the wrong direction.
In recent weeks, a pair of high-profile disappointments have been reported, including one just announced on a trial of the Eli Lily drug solanezumab.
Now, researchers are trying to figure out what might have been missed in the search for an Alzheimer's cure.
Did errors occur in the clinical trials of these drugs, creating the failure of potentially promising therapies? Or has there been a fundamental misunderstanding of the complex nature of Alzheimer's disease?
Until now, research has focused mainly on treating or preventing Alzheimer's by attacking the clumps of amyloid beta protein that form in patients' brains, potentially blocking signals sent between brain synapses. Amyloid plaques are one of the hallmarks of the disease.
"The overriding hypothesis for many years has been the amyloid hypothesis -- the idea if you can stop, slow or clear the formation of amyloid plaques from the brain you will be able to treat the disease and see marked improvements in cognition," said James Hendrix, director of global science initiatives for the Alzheimer's Association. "So far, that hasn't worked out."
Solanezumab binds with amyloid beta, and was intended to help the body flush the protein out of the brain before it could form damaging plaques.
But the drug failed to significantly slow thinking declines, Columbia University researchers reported in the Jan. 25 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Those results came on the heels of a trio of failed trials of the drug idalopirdine, which was intended to help treat Alzheimer's by promoting production of serotonin and other essential brain chemicals. A team of researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association earlier this month that the drug failed to improve thinking or memory in Alzheimer's patients.
Are amyloid plaques the wrong target?
During the past decade, Alzheimer's research has focused on amyloid plaques out of financial necessity, Hendrix explained.
"Ten years ago, there was very little funding for Alzheimer's disease," Hendrix said. "When you don't have a lot money for funding, you tend to go for the most obvious approach, and that was amyloid."
But one early hurdle may have tripped up many of the long-term clinical trials that are now coming to fruition, said Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Rochester, Minn.
Back then, there was no way to tell whether a person diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease actually had amyloid plaques in their brains. These plaques could only be observed during an autopsy.
Scientists now can see amyloid in the brain thanks to PET, an imaging technology that observes metabolic processes in the body. As a result, scientists have learned that about a third of people who appear to have Alzheimer's disease do not have high levels of amyloid in their brains, Hendrix said.
"If 30 percent of the people in your anti-amyloid clinical trial don't have amyloid in their brain, right off the bat your trial is probably going to fail because 30 percent of the people aren't going to respond to your therapeutic," he said.
The basic assumption that removing amyloid will automatically lead to an improvement in Alzheimer's patients needs to be re-evaluated, said Michael Murphy, an associate professor with the University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging.
Although the genetic evidence has been convincing that amyloid drives the disease, that doesn't mean that removing the protein from people already in the throes of Alzheimer's is going to help them, Murphy said.
"I think really it might be fairer to think that what happens is amyloid pathology is more like a trigger in the disease," he said.
"Once you get that thing going, you can think about it almost like a freight train. You get this going, and it's awfully hard to stop," Murphy said. "You might have removed the trigger, but once you remove the trigger you haven't dealt with the consequences of the events that have been set into motion."
Other factors at play in Alzheimer's
Seniors' brains also are vulnerable to other problems of aging known to contribute to Alzheimer's and dementia, such as high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, Murphy said.

[www.keralites.net] How A Group Of Volunteers Are Reclaiming One Temple At A Time-Karnataka

How A Group Of Volunteers Are Reclaiming Indic Heritage, One Temple At A Time :- An initiative launched through tweets, hashtags and social media posts has now snowballed into a movement in Karnataka that aims to undo the damage done to these temples that were not only religious centres but also melting pots of culture, art and education.

Spearheaded by activist Girish Bharadwaja, the movement aims to bring together people to not just deplore the deteriorating state of these relics or talk about their horrific past, but to get their hands dirty and "reclaim temples" that have endured this distressing treatment over the past decades and, in some cases, centuries.

The task is monumental as the temples lie in shambles all over the country with many villages and towns playing host to at least 30 to 40 such dilapidated structures, which are seen as a canvas of history, heritage, mythology and much more.

Bharadwaja, through his Bharata Punarutthana Trust, set the ball rolling and it has now turned into a movement, where hundreds of young volunteers support the effort physically, legally and financially.

They keep the authorities concerned informed about their actions, be it the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) or Karnataka government's Department of Archaeology. They also ensure that no untoward incidents take place in the process of 'reclaiming' the temples.

But the focus, they say, is to get the people to not just do it as a one-off effort but ensure that these temples are turned into a part of the village ecosystem like they were in the days that they were originally built.

Kalaburgi is home to many temples that were destroyed during the reign of the Delhi sultanate. And Halkeri, who spends his birthday every year doing something for the society, starting the temple cleanup activities at Kalaburgi this year. The Sunday of 26 November was thus spent by a group of youngsters cleaning the Chinchansu Maheshwara Devalaya in Kalaburgi, and the transformation was immense.

The effort has now led them to devote second and fourth Sundays of every month for the temple cleaning activity. The second Sunday of December had the team heading to Ramalingeshwara temple in Hodala village. The place that had been turned into a dingy den, where people played cards and the like, has now been restored to the sanctity it deserved.

The last one of their efforts in Kalaburgi was on the fourth Sunday of this month (December 2017) at the Rummanagudu Neelakanteshwara temple, which was destroyed completely during an attack on the village in the past.

While the long Christmas weekend that went by had many taking off to exotic places on vacation, students of S Nijalingappa Medical College in Bagalkot took to restructuring the ruined anatomy of the Mahakuta temple. Around 15 students, who saw posts about the temple needing cleanup efforts, got in touch with Bharadwaja and nursed the temple back to functional health, all thanks to the hashtag #SundayforDharma.
