[www.keralites.net] Hanna Sillitoe creates a diet that has cured her and thousands around the world psoriasis and eczema

Woman whose 20-year battle with psoriasis and eczema was so severe she was offered CHEMOTHERAPY creates a diet that has cured her and thousands around the world

US mother of a psoriasis-covered toddler used Hanna's diet plan and revealed her daughter 'has her life back'
Charlie, diagnosed with psoriasis at four-months-old, is one of youngest patients to have the condition so severeAfter changing her diet, her mother says her two-hour daily bathing routine is reduced to just 20 minutes
Ashley – who said some people have accused her of being 'a bad parent' when they've mistaken her daughter's psoriasis for severe sunburn – reports Charlie has found relief

A woman whose 20-year battle with psoriasis and eczema was so severe she was told her only treatment option was chemotherapy has found a 'cure' through diet.

Hanna Sillitoe was in such agony she even had to resort to going out with her red-raw skin wrapped in clingfilm to stop her clothes rubbing against it.

Having tried 'every cream under the sun' and at her wits end, the 38-year-old, from Manchester, began researching about anti-inflammatory foods and devised her own diet. She cut out caffeine, alcohol, sugar, dairy and wheat.

The interior designer then found her heavily scaly and crusted skin cleared up completely and as a 'bonus' lost five stone (31kg). She also says her 'whole health has been boosted'.

It inspired her to start a blog, and then publish a book, which has sold more than 5,000 copies since it went on sale in January.

Psoriasis causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scalesThe woman's skin looks much better after making the dietary changes

Hanna has included these before and after pictures of an unnamed psoriasis sufferer – whose location is not known – who tried her diet in her book after the woman read about her 'cure' on her blog

'I cleared my psoriasis'

Hanna said when she was 35, her skin problems and general health has reached a low point.

She said: 'As well as skin problems, I suffered recurring urinary tract infections, my blood pressure was dangerously high, I was overweight and permanently exhausted.

'At its worst, eczema covered my eyelids and plaque and guttate psoriasis [a type that appears as small, salmon-pink bumps on the skin] spread across my arms, legs, boobs, tummy and scalp.

'Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of the disease with red raised patches covered in silvery scales affecting my knees, elbows and forearms.'

After educating herself on nutrition, she then cut out caffeine, alcohol, sugar, dairy and wheat.

'I cleared my psoriasis, eczema and acne, and lost five stone in weight without trying.

'My recurring kidney infections disappeared, my bleeding gums healed and my energy levels bounced through the roof.'

[www.keralites.net] 8 Pressure points to reduce stress

8 Pressure Points That Will Reduce Your Stress in Seconds‏
We all have our ways of dealing with stress. Some people escape to a sunny beach, some prefer a nice glass of wine, and others even do their best to ignore it. Each way has its advantages (and sometimes disadvantages), but we can't always do what helps at the exact moment we need to. This is where pressure points become a quick and effective long-term solution. Pressure points are areas in the body that can trigger various effects in our bodies and minds when pressure is applied to them.
The Scalp

The Scalp is full of pressure points, many that can effectively and discretely reduce stress levels. You can sit at your office desk, lean back and use two fingers to massage the point where the neck meets the skull for about 20 seconds. Much of the stress we accumulate during the day collects in the shoulders and neck muscles, and applying pressure to this point can relieve much of it.
The Ear

This pressure point is known as Shen Men (The Spirit Gate), and some experts claim it's the best stress-relieving point in the body. In reflexology, it's also used to reduce inflammation and pain throughout the body. It's recommended that you massage this spot with a cotton bud or even a pen, and to take deep, slow breaths during the massage.
The Chest

Stress can make us forget to breathe, or take shallow breaths. This point helps reduce the stress that accumulates in your chest, while reminding you to breathe normally again. Use three fingers to massage this point, or one finger to tap rhythmically on the area while taking deep breaths. If you experience chronic stress, combine massaging this point with the point between your eyebrows. The connection between these two points helps to calm the nervous system.
The Stomach

Many reflexologists prefer to use this point because it helps create movement that frees the chest and diaphragm, which improves the breathing process. Patients who have this treatment instinctively take deeper breaths and almost always report a sensation or relief.
The Forearm

This is a classic spot for reflexology and acupuncture. Stress and anxiety create reverse energy flow in the body, which this spot is supposed to repair. It helps your energy to move in the right direction while aiding your mental focus and reducing stress.
The Palm

The moment you press on this spot, you'll feel your stress evaporating. It is located on one of the most important meridians (an energy channel), which affects the heart, liver, and pancreas. It is believed that much of the stress we experience is stored in the liver, so applying pressure on this point is highly effective. It is also a great spot for treating headaches, stomachaches, indigestion, and insomnia – all of which could be symptoms of stress.
The Calves

If you feel stress in the upper part of your body, massaging this spot is perfect. The area could be quite tender in people who deal with a lot of stress, and in women in particular.
The Foot

Pressure on this point can help ease a stressed mind that keeps rethinking whatever it is that causes your stress. Some reflexologists believe that this is the best meridian for treating the pancreas and that its location, in the center of the foot, helps patients reduce stress and provide better attention to their bodies.

[www.keralites.net] Strawberries prevent Heart Disease, diabetes

Strawberries prevent heart disease, diabetes
Strawberries, the traditional summer treat, could offer unexpected health benefits of preventing development of heart disease and diabetes, says a study.
University of Warwick scientists have been studying the beneficial effects of strawberries on cardiovascular health, particularly around how they prevent the development of heart disease and diabetes.
Paul Thornalley, professor at the Warwick Medical School, heads the team that discovered extracts from strawberries positively activate a protein in our bodies called 'Nrf2', which is shown to increase antioxidant and other protective activities.
This protein works to decrease blood lipids and cholesterol, the very things which can lead to cardiovascular problems, said a university statement.
Eating strawberries has previously been found to counter post-meal blood glucose and low density lipoprotein, or 'bad' cholesterol and therefore decrease risk of diabetes and heart disease, but this is the first time that strawberry extracts have been proved to actively stimulate proteins that offer us protection against disease.
Thornalley explained: " We've discovered the science behind how strawberries work to increase our in-built defences to keep cells, organs and blood vessels healthy and which can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and diabetes."
Screening and math modelling techniques developed at Warwick can now take this research further to help identify the best varieties of strawberries, how they are served or processed and how many strawberries should be eaten for optimum health benefit.
Thornalley will be presenting these findings at the 16th biennial meeting for the Society for Free Radical Research International (SFRRI), Imperial College London.

[www.keralites.net] Very nice article by Khushwant Singh who passed away on March 21st 2014

Very nice article by Khushwant Singh who passed
away on March 21st 2014 at the age of 99
I've often thought about what it is that makes
people happy—what one has to do in order to
achieve happiness.
First and foremost is good health. If you do not
enjoy good health, you can never be happy. Any
ailment, however trivial, will deduct something
from your happiness.
Second, a healthy bank balance. It need not run
into crores, but it should be enough to provide
for comforts, and there should be something to
spare for recreation—eating out, going to the
movies, travel and holidays in the hills or by the
sea. Shortage of money can be demoralising. Living
on credit or borrowing is demeaning and lowers one
in one's own eyes.
Third, your own home. Rented places can never give
you the comfort or security of a home that is
yours for keeps. If it has garden space, all the
better. Plant your own trees and flowers, see them
grow and blossom, and cultivate a sense of kinship
with them.
Fourth, an understanding companion, be it your
spouse or a friend. If you have too many
misunderstandings, it robs you of your peace of
mind. It is better to be divorced than to be
quarrelling all the time.
Fifth, stop envying those who have done better
than you in life—risen higher, made more money, or
earned more fame. Envy can be corroding; avoid
comparing yourself with others.
Sixth, do not allow people to descend on you for
gup-shup. By the time you get rid of them, you
will feel exhausted and poisoned by their
gossip-mongering.
Seventh, cultivate a hobby or two that will
fulfill you—gardening, reading, writing, painting,
playing or listening to music. Going to clubs or
parties to get free drinks, or to meet
celebrities, is a criminal waste of time. It's
important to concentrate on something that keeps
you occupied meaningfully.
Eighth, every morning and evening devote 15
minutes to introspection. In the mornings, 10
minutes should be spent in keeping the mind
absolutely still, and five listing the things you
have to do that day. In the evenings, five minutes
should be set aside to keep the mind still and 10
to go over the tasks you had intended to do.
Ninth, don't lose your temper. Try not to be
short-tempered, or vengeful. Even when a friend
has been rude, just move on.
Above all, when the time comes to go, one should
go like a man without any regret or grievance
against anyone. Iqbal said it beautifully in a
couplet in Persian: "You ask me about the signs of
a man of faith? When death comes to him, he has a
smile on his lips."
I don't fear death. What I dread is the day I go
blind or am incapacitated because of old
age—that's what I fear—I'd rather die than live in
that condition. I'm a burden enough on my daughter
Mala and don't want to be an extra burden on her.
All that I hope for is that when death comes to
me, it comes swiftly, without much pain, like
fading away in sound slumber. Till then I'll keep
working and living each day as it comes.
