[www.keralites.net] Rajeev Kamal Bittu :- The Chartered Accountant Who Is Shining As a Farmer in the Fields of Jharkhand

Rajeev Kamal Bittu :- The Chartered Accountant Who Is Shining As a Farmer in the Fields of Jharkhand

Chartered accountant Rajeev Kamal Bittu could have easily led a luxurious life but instead he chose heat, dust, hard labour and risk as an agripreneur – to bring back respect to farming. "I set out myself on a mission to prove that anybody can do farming and it is not a lowly job," says 37-year-old Rajeev. It's a mission he has made a very successful one.

"I had sales of around Rs 40-45 lakh, of which the profit was around Rs 20-22 lakh

Farming has changed his life in every way. "I live in Ranchi and used to travel 28 km nearly daily to my farm in Kuchu village," says Rajeev. "Now I find it very difficult to bind myself within the four walls of my office. I would rather spend my time with nature. It gives a lot to my life."

Rajeev Kamal Bittu took to farming after his daughter reluctantly responded to a farmer who wanted to take her in his arms because he was wearing shabby, muddy clothes (Photos: Monirul Islam Mullick )

It all began in 2013, a life-changing year, when Rajeev went to his village in Gopal Ganj in Bihar along with his three-year-old daughter, Ritwika Kamal.

"She mingled with all the villagers," he recounts, "but hesitated when a farmer tried to take her in his arms, because he was wearing shabby, muddy clothes.

"Her reaction upset me and it hit me that our country's farmers toil hard to give us food, but they are still looked down upon and ignored." Rajeev vowed to earn worth and value for the farming community.

His life's journey had been very different until then.

Born in Gopal Ganj in the Siwan district of Bihar, Rajeev was the eldest of three siblings. His father, Birendra Prasad, was an engineer in the State government irrigation department at a salary of Rs 3,000, and as the eldest had the responsibility of his six siblings.

"My father's salary was spent on the family," Rajeev says.

After completing CA in 2003, Rajeev rented a space of around 150 sq ft at a monthly rent of around Rs. 5000 in Ranchi and started practising as a CA there. He earned an average Rs 40,000 a month and in 2009 he got married to Rashmi Sahay (30), a plastic engineer.

It was business as usual until that fateful day in Gopal Ganj.

A complete novice in the field, Rajeev began to research farming using multiple sources – the Internet, professors at the Birsa Krishi Agriculture university and local farmers.

Rajeev had to invest around Rs 2.5 lakh to bring the barren land into proper shape and get the paraphernalia for organic farming. "We farmed in seven acres of land, sowing watermelon and yellow melon in October-November 2013," says Rajeev.

At the end of daily hard labour over months, the crop, harvested by January-end 2014, sold for around Rs 19 lakh to the local fruit wholesalers and yielded a profit of around Rs 7-8 lakh.

Encouraged by this, Rajeev began to experiment, based on market study and his own instinct. He leased another 13 acres of land in Anandi village of Ranchi's Ormanjhi block at a rental of Rs 8000-Rs 10,0000 per annum.

"We sowed cherry tomatoes, sweet corn and sweet potatoes," he says. It was again a profitable venture and the wholesale market began to recognize him for his unique crops.

"I had sales of around Rs 40-45 lakh, of which the profit was around Rs 20-22 lakh," he says. In 2016, he leased yet another three acres in Kuchu in Ormanjhi at Rs 45,000 per year, to cultivate vegetables, such as cucumber, pumpkin and brinjal.

[www.keralites.net] SAMBHAR CAN PREVENT COLON CANCER

Food cure: How sambar can prevent colon cancer!
INDULEKHA ARAKKAL

Sambar is not spicy, doesn't affect the intestine lining and stops the development of carcinogen.
Sambar, that most popular of south Indian curries, has been proved to prevent colon cancer and medical experts say that it is the mixture of spices in the sambar powder that contributes to its effectiveness.
Sambar, that most popular of south Indian curries, has been proved to prevent colon cancer and medical experts say that it is the mixture of spices in the sambar powder that contributes to its effectiveness.
Piping hot sambar is often suggested as a home remedy for various ailments by family elders and now we have a research by the Manipal University to validate the same. Sambar, that most popular of south Indian curries, has been proved to prevent colon cancer and medical experts say that it is the mixture of spices in the sambar powder that contributes to its effectiveness.
Sambar powder has anti-tumorigenic properties, that is, it counteracts the formation of tumours. Sambar powder consists of coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds, turmeric rhizomes, black pepper, curry leaves, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Dr S.V.S.S. Prasad, an oncologist, says that if properly made, sambar is a very nutritious dish. "The properties of the spices used helps bowel movement thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer. Sambar is not a spicy dish and therefore doesn't affect the lining of the intestine and actually prevents development of dimethylhydrazine, which is a factor of colon cancer."
Cancer Research Institute (CRI) of the Tata Memorial Institute, Mumbai, has conducted studies on the chemo-preventive action of agents from Indian foods such as turmeric. A senior researcher from the preventive oncology department says, "Instead of taking sambar as a whole, if we split it into components, we see the many benefits of all the ingredients that go into it. All the components facilitate good digestion which is crucial to prevent colon cancer."
Instances of colon cancer are higher in north India. Medical experts claim that this is because of the prevalent diet, which consists of more wheat and that leads to constipation. The diet followed in South India, of rice and curry, supposedly helps in bowel movement. Dr T.P.S. Bhan-dari, an oncologist, says, "Seventy per cent of colon cancer cases are in north India. Tur-meric, which is an active ingredient in sambar powder, has anti-cancerous properties. It prevents the formation of free radicals which can be carcinogenic. South Indian curries and especially sambar, is cooked using primarily spices. In North India, we see more grilled food which has tar and free radicals due to the manner of its preparation."
Sambar is prescribed by gastroenterologists not only for the spices but also for the vegetables added to it. Dr Vimalakar Reddy, gastroenterologist says, "Indian food is always rich in fibre. Sambar, especially, uses many vegetables like carrot, bitter gourd, ladies finger, drum stick, tomatoes and others, which have their own individual healthy properties, as do lentils that are also used in the preparation. The mix of spices and other ingredients leads to more fat absorption that increases motility and therefore can prevent colon cancer." A diet high in fat and low in fibre often leads to colon cancer.
Ayesha Fatima, a nutritionist, says, "Although the study is very preliminary, the health aspects of sambar cannot be ignored which is why it is such a popular dish. Black turmeric and fenugreek that is added in sambar is said to reduce the risk of colon cancer. It prevents the effect on inflammatory mediators and prevents negative stress on colonic tissues."

[www.keralites.net] The Truth Behind Phone charging Myths

The Truth Behind Misleading Phone Charging Myths
I think it's a pretty good guess that the two scariest words for any cell phone user are "low battery". Apart from getting it wet, getting a low power warning is the worst thing that can happen to your smartphone, and most of us are constantly aware of how our battery is doing and if it needs to be charged.

There are many misleading myths that evolved over time about charging your phone, most of them are completely wrong. These myths are not only false but can actually do more harm than good, and reduce the total life span of your battery. So for those of us who want to keep our phone battery charged as long as possible, these are the myths you should avoid.

Myth: Off-brand chargers destroy batteries.

Truth: While not optimal, off-brand chargers are still fine for recharging your phone and will not have a significant influence on your battery's life span. What you should be avoiding are brand knockoffs. Charging you phone with one of these will barely get the job done, reduce your battery's maximum charge and endanger its ability to function.

Myth: Don't use your phone while it charges.

Truth: Using the phone while it's plugged in to the charger will not decrease the efficacy of the charge. The reasons behind this myth are linked to cases in which people used low quality knockoffs. When using a sketchy charger all sorts of bad things can happen to your phone, but as mentioned before you don't want to be using them anyway. If you're using the manufacturer approved charger and battery, you should be fine using it anytime you want.

Myth: Charging your phone overnight damages the battery.

Truth: Our phones today are smarter than they used to be, when in full capacity they automatically know they should stop charging. However, that doesn't mean you should have your phone plugged in to the charger all the time. The optimal time to charge your phone in order to keep the battery going long as possible is between 40% and 80%.

Myth: Never turn off your phone.

Truth: This myth is a total lie, just because your phone is a machine doesn't mean it's bad for it to take a few breaks. In fact, apple experts recommend to turn off your phone once in a while in order to maximize battery life. At the very least it's recommend to turn off your phone once a week for a few hours.

Myth: Don't charge your battery until it's completely empty.

Truth: This myth was true in past generations of smartphones and rechargeable electronic devices, but today it's completely wrong. Most modern phones use lithium-ion batteries and if you constantly let them drain to 0%, they become unstable. It is much better to charge your phone every day when it's between 40% and 80% power.

Myth: Always charge a new phone before using it.

Truth: Almost every new phone comes with instructions to fully charge if before you start using it but it's mostly unnecessary. Since most modern batteries are best stored at about 40%, almost every manufacturer sends their phones out with at least half a charge. This means that if you buy a new phone and it does not have a 40% charge when you turn it on, its most ly because the battery is very old. If this is the case, you should ask for a different one as it will surely last you longer than one that has either been used before, or has been sitting idle for a really long time with no use.

Myth: You can always use rechargeable batteries.

Truth: This one is a bit more misleading than false, but it's still important to know that most batteries do have a limited life span of full discharge cycles. Each cycle starts when your device has used 100% of its capacity. This means that if you charge your phone today from 50% to full and do the same tomorrow, that's a full discharge cycle. Once you go above the amount of full cycles your battery is capable of it will start to lose capacity to store power.

So yes, you can keep on using your battery for a very long time, but once the official "life span" is over, you'll have to be very mindful of how you use it. Hopefully it will only happen once, when you want to upgrade your device.

Bonus fact: Heat will ruin your battery.

altAs a general rule heat and technology don't go hand-in-hand. Lithium-ion batteries get hotter when they are being charged. Now while it's also a really bad idea to put your phone in the fridge, you should always be mindful of where you place your phone, especially when charging it. Never charge it under direct sunlight or next to other hot electronics a laptop or a working oven. This may not only damage your battery but also the phone itself.

[www.keralites.net] A REPEAT MSSG, STILL WORTH IT

( A repeat message but still worth it).
Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST (Emergency)
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
SECOND (Hidden Battery Power)
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time.
THIRD (How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? )
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone:
*#06#
A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.
If your phone is stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
And Finally....
FOURTH (Free Directory Service for Cells)
Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial:
(800) FREE411 or (800) 373-3411
without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.
This is sponsored by McDonalds.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.
