[www.keralites.net] Sitting on the floor and eating -10 Benefits!

Sitting on the floor and eating -10 Benefits!

In many Indian households you will find that people sit on the floor and eat their meals. While most of us have embraced the table and chair as a place to eat, there are those of us who prefer to sit in front of the TV and/or sit on the bed and eat. While this might be very comfortable, it might not necessarily be the best thing for your health. Our ancestors definitely had a plan when they made sure we sit on the floor, cross legged and ate our food. Here are 10 reasons going back to your roots is the best for your health.

1. Helps improve your digestion:
When you sit on the floor, you usually sit cross legged – an asana known as sukhasana or a half padmasna which are poses that help in digestion (since it is believed that when one sits in this pose in front of food it automatically signals your brain to prepare for digestion). Apart from that when you eat from a plate placed on the floor, you will have to naturally bend forward slightly and go back to your starting position to swallow. This constant back and forth movement causes the muscles of your abdomen to be activated and also leads to increased secretion of stomach acids – making it much easier for you to digest food.

2. Helps you lose weight:
Sitting on the floor and eating has significant weight loss benefits too. When you sit in this position, your brain automatically calms down and is better equipped to focusing on the food you eat. Moreover this position helps you cognate the amount of food you have eaten and helps you feel full faster. How does that work? Well, the main reason people overeat is because they do not know when they are full. This happens because the vagus nerve (the main nerve that transmits signals from the stomach to the brain) sends signals to the brain as you eat, telling it if you are satiated or not. When you sit on the floor this nerve is able to perform better and transmit signals more efficiently. Also, since this position makes you eat slower than you would while sitting on a table, it gives your stomach and brain time to cognate the signals of feeling full, thereby preventing overeating and bingeing.

3. Makes you more flexible:
When you squat or sit in padmasana, the muscles in your lower back, pelvis, around your stomach and those of the upper and lower abdomen stretch – reducing pain and discomfort. This, in turn helps your digestive system relax and stay in a normal position. Moreover, this position does not compress your stomach in anyway helping you eat and digest better. Moreover, the regular stretching of these essential muscles also helps make you more flexible and healthy.

4. Aids in mindful eating:
When you sit on the floor and eat as a family it aids in mindful eating. Not only does it help you focus on your food, but it also helps you make better choices when you eat. Since your mind is calm and your body is ready to accept nutrition, sitting on the floor is the best way to eat the right amount and kinds of food. According to leading nutritionist, Rujuta Diwekar, eating food while concentrating on every aspect of the food – its smell, taste, texture and how much you are eating is the key to losing weight – which is what sitting on the floor and eating gives you.

5. Helps you bond with your family:
Usually the practice of sitting on the floor and eating is a family activity. This time is great for you to bond. One of the reasons sitting on the floor is better at helping you bond is because it leads to a calm and happy mind – helping you listen more intently and peacefully.

6. Improves your posture:
Posture is very important when it comes to staying healthy. Good posture not only helps prevent injuries but it also reduces the chances of excessive strain on certain muscles and joints, which can lead to fatigue and quicker than normal wear and tear. When you sit on the floor your posture is automatically corrected, making your back straight, lengthening your spine and pushes back your shoulders – beating all the common aches and pains that come with bad posture.

7. Can make you live longer:
Sounds a bit unbelievable right? Well, it's true, sitting on the floor and eating can actually help you live longer. A study published in the Journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that people who sat on the floor in padmasana and were able to get up without any support were more likely to live longer. This is because being able to get up from that position takes a considerable amount of flexibility and lower body strength. The study found that those who were not able to get up without support were at the risk of being 6.5 times more likely to die in the next six years.

8. Lubricates and keeps your knees and hip joint healthy:
According to PS Venkateshwara, author of the book Yoga for Healing, padmasana and sukhasana is one pose that has health benefits for your entire body. Not only does it help your digestive system function better, but it also helps keep your joints supple, flexible and less prone to injuries and degenerative diseases like arthritis and osteoporosis. That is because the constant bending of the knees, ankles and hip joint helps keep them flexible and free of diseases. And with flexibility comes better lubrication between the joints making it much easier to sit on the floor.

9. Relaxes the mind and calms the nerves:
Sukhasana and padmasana or the cross legged way one sits on the floor while eating has a number of benefits, and one of its most significant ones is that it calms the mind and relaxes frazzled nerves. A very handy tool, it is believed in Ayurveda that eating with a calm mind helps better digestion and in some cases has even helped people relish food better.

10. Strengthens the heart by improving circulation:
Have you ever noticed that when you eat, you tend to feel warmer and in some cases even sweat? Well, that is because when we eat our stomach needs all the energy it can use to digest food. One of digestion's most important element is a sound blood circulation. To keep up with this process, your heart tends to work overtime to help out your digestive system. Here is where sitting on the floor and eating can help you out. When you sit on the floor your heart gets the benefits of circulation as the blood is easily pumped through the heart to all the organs needed for digestion. This is in contrast to the pattern of circulation when you sit on a dining table and chair, wherein the blood flows to the legs as they are lower than the heart. Therefore sitting on the floor and eating, affords you a healthy heart with strong muscles to help it cope with the pressures of daily life.

This is a masterpiece....irony of Indian Democracy...

A JNU professor, a reporter and a tough old soldier were captured by terrorists in Kashmir.

The leader of the terrorists told them he'd grant each of them one last request before they were beheaded.

The liberal professor said, 'Well, I'm a foodie, so I'd like one last plate of biryani.'

The reporter said, 'I'm a reporter to the end. I want to take out my tape recorder and describe the scene here and what's about to happen.

Maybe, someday, someone will hear it and know that I was on the job till the end.'

The leader turned to the soldier and asked, 'And now, Havaldarji, what is your final wish?

'Kick me in the rear,' said the soldier.

'What?' asked the leader, 'Will you mock us in your last hour?'

'No, I'm NOT kidding.

I just want you to kick me in the rear,' insisted the soldier.

So the leader shoved him into the yard and kicked him in the rear.

The soldier went sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9 mm pistol from inside his cammies and shot the leader dead.

In the resulting confusion, he emptied his sidearm on six terrorists, then with his knife he slashed the throat of one, and with an AK-47, which he took from one of the already dead terrorists, sprayed the rest of the terrorists killing another 11.

In a flash, all of them were either dead or fleeing for their lives.

As the soldier was untying the Professor and the Reporter, they asked him,

'Why didn't you just shoot them all in the first place?

Why did you ask him to kick you in the rear?'

'Because' replied the soldier,

'if I had shot first, you two morons would have reported that I was the aggressor and the root cause of all the blood shedding in Kashmir.'

... such is the irony of Indian Democracy...

[www.keralites.net] Nuts Good for Some With Diabetes!

Nuts Good for Some With Diabetes!

Study Shows Daily Serving of Nuts Improves Blood Sugar in Type 2 Diabetes!

Eating about 2 ounces of nuts daily in place of carbohydrates may be beneficial to people with type 2 diabetes by lowering bad cholesterol levels and improving blood sugar control, a new study shows.

"There are two important factors in caring for diabetes: blood sugar control and heart health," study researcher Cyril W.C. Kendall, PhD, of the University of Toronto, says in a news release.

The study involved 117 people with type 2 diabetes who were randomly assigned to one of three groups. One group's members ate about 2 ounces of mixed nuts daily, another a healthy muffin, and the third half nuts and half muffin.

Researchers say those whose diet included 2 ounces of nuts showed better results after three months in both blood sugar and LDL "bad" cholesterol levels than participants in the other two groups.

The nuts consisted of a mixture of unsalted and mostly raw almonds, pistachios, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts, cashews, and macadamias.

The muffin was concocted to be a healthy whole wheat product, sweetened with apple concentrate but with no sugar added. The muffins had similar protein content to the nuts from the addition of egg white and skim milk powder. Calories from monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in the nuts were the same as the carbohydrate calories in the muffin, the researchers write.

During the three-month study, participants were asked to maintain their oral diabetes medications.

Blood Sugar Improvement
The main outcome researchers looked for was change in a marker of blood sugar control called HbA1c.

Kendall described the results of the study as "a very exciting and promising finding about the treatment" of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers write that the reduction in the HbA1c level was significantly more in those in the nuts-only group than participants in the other groups.

The reduction of LDL "bad" cholesterol was also significantly greater in those who ate 2 ounces of nuts compared with the group eating muffins.

"We conclude that mixed, unsalted, raw, or dry-roasted nuts have benefits for both blood glucose control and blood lipids and may be used to increase vegetable oil and protein intake in the diets of type 2 diabetic patients as part of a strategy to improve diabetes control without weight gain," the researchers write.

The study is published in the August issue of Diabetes Care.

One of the supporters of the study was the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research and Education Foundation, which represents almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts, and also the Peanut Institute.

Both Kendall and David J.A. Jenkins, MD, also of the University of Toronto and author of the study, acknowledged receiving honoraria from the Almond Board of California, the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research and Education Foundation, and Unilever Canada.

[www.keralites.net] Causes and Treatments For Insomnia!

Causes and Treatments For Insomnia!

We spend over a third of our time sleeping. But unfortunately for many of us, sleep isn't a simple ON/OFF switch we can just activate at a moment's notice. Do you struggle to sleep even though you feel tired and sleepy? Do you wake up in the middle of the night anxiously watching the clock, calculating how much time you've got left to sleep?

If you've answered yes to any of these questions, you're not alone. About 2 out of 5 people share your problem.

Insomnia is a common, devastating problem that can cost us our energy, our good mood, our ability to function and ultimately our health. If the situation becomes chronic, it can lead to more serious health problems and even a shortening of our life span, according to experts.

Insomnia in itself is not the problem but is usually a symptom of a variety of other potential problems. The trick is identifying the underlying cause of our insomnia and finding the right treatment for that problem. Sometimes insomnia hides more serious medical or psychological issues, and sometimes there is no easy cure for it, and one must take special supplements or pills to sleep.

Common Symptoms of Insomnia:
Difficulty falling asleep despite being tired
Waking up frequently during the night
Trouble getting back to sleep when awakened
Exhausting sleep
Relying on alcohol to fall asleep
Waking up too early in the morning
Daytime drowsiness, fatigue, or irritability
Difficulty concentrating during the day
Causes of Insomnia: Figuring out why you can't sleep

Let's put on our detective hat and try to find the reasons for our insomnia. Sleep detectives like ourselves take note of factors such as stress, anxiety and depression, which are responsible for about half of all insomnia cases. In addition, they note the daytime habits, the sleep routine and the actual physical health of the person to understand their impact on the quality of their sleep.

Psychological issues that can cause insomnia:
Depression, anxiety, chronic stress, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder.

People who suffer from these mental stresses have a hard time sleeping, not only because of their inner turmoil, but because the body is physically preventing sleep because of these issues. Unfortunately, the lack of sleep tends to make these problems worse, and thus a magic cycle is born, where we are constantly tired, cranky, anxious and depressed, and can't sleep to boot.

Medications that can cause insomnia:
antidepressants; cold and flu medications that contain alcohol; pain relievers that contain caffeine (Midol, Excedrin); diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid hormone, high blood pressure medications. Make sure to always check with your doctor, and research the medication you're taking to make sure that one of the side effects is not insomnia.

Medical problems that can cause insomnia: asthma, allergies, Parkinson's disease, hyperthyroidism, acid reflux, kidney disease, cancer, chronic pain.

Sleep disorders that can cause insomnia:
Sleep apnea (trouble breathing during the night that results in the person not breathing, then waking up many times in the night without knowing why), narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome.

How to Cure Your Insomnia:
Some of the things we do to cope with our lack of sleep may actually do us harm, such as drinking a lot of coffee during the day to wake up or alcohol (red wine for example) at night to fall asleep. Often, changing the habits that are reinforcing sleeplessness is enough to overcome insomnia altogether. It may take a few days for your body to get used to the change, but once you do, you will sleep better.

That is the easy solution half the time. If a change of habits and relaxation really don't do the trick, there are remedies on the market that can help.

Adopting new habits to help you sleep
- Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool. Noise, light, and heat can interfere with sleep. Try using a sound machine or earplugs to hide outside noise, an open window or fan to keep the room cool, and blackout curtains or a sleep mask to block out light.

- Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Support your biological clock by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, including weekends, even if you're tired. This will help you get back in a regular sleep rhythm.

- Avoid naps. Napping during the day can make it more difficult to sleep at night. If you feel like you have to take a nap, limit it to 30 minutes before 3 p.m.

- Limit caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. Stop drinking caffeinated beverages at least eight hours before bed. Avoid drinking alcohol in the evening; while alcohol can make you feel sleepy, it interferes with the quality of your sleep. Quit smoking or avoid it at night, as nicotine is a stimulant.

Preparing your brain for sleep
Your brain produces the hormone melatonin to help regulate your sleep-wake cycle. As melatonin is controlled by light exposure, not enough natural light during the day can make your brain feel sleepy, while too much artificial light at night can suppress production of melatonin and make it harder to sleep.
To boost melatonin production, use low-wattage bulbs, cover windows and electrical displays in your bedroom, avoid bright light and turn off television, smartphone, and computer screens at least one hour before bed.

Learning to associate your bed with sleeping, not sleeplessness
Use the bedroom only for sleeping (and sexual activity). Don't work, watch TV, or use your computer or smartphone. The goal is to associate the bedroom with sleep, so that when you get in bed your brain and body get a strong signal that it's time to nod off.

Get out of bed when you can't sleep. Don't try to force yourself to sleep. Tossing and turning only increases the anxiety. Get up, leave the bedroom, and do something relaxing, such as reading or listening to soothing music. When you're sleepy, go back to bed.

Breathing from your belly. Most of us don't breathe as deeply as we should. When we breathe deeply and fully, involving not only the chest, but also the belly, lower back, and ribcage, it can help relaxation. Close your eyes and take deep, slow breaths, making each breath even deeper than the last. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Progressive muscle relaxation. Lie down or make yourself comfortable. Starting with your feet, tense the muscles as tightly as you can. Hold for a count of 10, and then relax. Continue to do this for every muscle group in your body, working your way up from your feet to the top of your head.

The problem with sleeping pills and the new generation of sleep formulas
A new generation of sleep formulas is replacing the sleeping pills we've known so far. The problem with sleeping pills is that they usually work by lowering the activity of our nervous system. This presents 3 problems: The first is that they leave us drowsy in the morning. The second is that they contribute to our continued cycle of insomnia, and the third is that they are addictive.

The new formulas are a reaction to these problems, as we see today that medicine is turning more and more to natural ingredients. These include ingredients such as Longan fruit extract, Muceuna Pruriens herb extract and Valerian root extract, and have the following advantages over the old sleeping pills:
- They are made from natural ingredients
- They don't leave you sleepy the next day
- Are non-addictive
- Preserve your focus
- Are impossible to overdose on

[www.keralites.net] Outlook Transformations!

Outlook Transformations!

From the Spiritual Outlook to Scientific Outlook to Mechanical Outlook to Economic Outlook to Contractual Outlook to Fraudulent Outlook to Indifferent Outlook...,these headings may be given to trace the gradual changes in the human outlook.

When nature was blooming, when the lush flora and fauna were singing and dancing, when the resulting rapture was subsuming and absorbing, it was air (another name for spirit) that moulded the human outlook as a part of the entire biospheric and ecological outlook. Air or Spirit with its music of winds, breezes and tunes, smells and sounds, guided the human lives. It was God that was directing, ordering, communicating, rewarding...through the air. People inhaled and exhaled God, and Pranayama or breathe control was learning from God. The result was yoga, the Holistic Breathe based Science. These people of Bharat never invaded or destroyed other civilizations, because they accepted that the particular air and climate of an area was under the direction of God and that they shall not be disturbed.

How this spiritual outlook was gradually and coercively changed into the mechanical outlook is a very long History. So I skip a lot of the factors that brought out the change.

Now we just go to Rene Descartes, who contended that everything is only a machine and only mechanical and as machines they just cannot feel pain. Only human beings felt pain because God entered them only--- through the pineal gland in the brain. To prove that everything is a machine only, he nailed big animals like bulls to wooden logs, cut them open to show their mechanical structures. His Biology was Mechanics without feelings, a gigantic repudiation of nature. The indifference, to feelings, sentiments and emotions became the most valued qualification for the scientific outlook or mechanical outlook glorified as the unbiased outlook. In one word, the basis of life-Spirit and the emotional manifestations of the spirit became the big disqualifications in the development of the scientific outlook. The route selected was quantification, mathematical reductionism and arriving at the mechanical and non emotional interactions. The speciality of mathematics is, it simply cannot quantify any emotion into mathematical quantities. Can you write the simple sentence 'I love you', in numerals only without using words at all?

This mathematical reductionism entered Humanities, the ultimate paradox; because every human being is a cauldron of emotions and continuous emotional changes characterize life. But Newtonian Physics was extended to all social sciences where the subject matter is human being.

In economics, they assumed away the phantom-the economic man, a non emotional programmed robot, so that all sorts of non human geometric curves, lines, graphs, mathematical equations etc can be created. After a protest in the definition chapter of economics, that it deals with human beings, from the next chapter on the human being is completely jettisoned and one deals only with indifference curves, cost curves, revenue curves, demand curves, supply curves, income multiplier, employment multiplier....my God, the human being is buried without trace.

The biggest myth or the ultimate stupidity propagated by economics is that, it is not nature, not the blooming nature that gives livelihoods, but only the continuously murdered nature that gives livelihoods!

You convert a large amount of nature into raw materials or hunt the remaining nature for future possibility as raw material. In both the cases nature of course will be destroyed or diseased. And livelihoods and employments exist in the murder of nature!, to believe the economists, who are experts in verbiage and just cannot predict at all about the future of any economy as the assumption, 'other things being equal', simply does not work. There is only one aspect in which economics succeeded—it made all people extremely greedy and ready to destroy Goddess Bhoodevi completely. Mother earth has been given divorce via economics by all her children. The so called scientific outlook itself has become a euphemism for the basically profit hungry and destructive and greedy outlook. All human relations changed mainly into economic relations and now are slowly changing, into contractual and mechanical relations. Families are on the way out. Every one to oneself. Single parent families, gay families, Lesbian families, rented wombs, Homes to functions as parents as the parents are very busy, the old age homes...,the list is big. Add test tube babies, clones too to the new social concoction.

The net result is the loss of trust. Dettol to fight nature, the hire and fire jobs and job reduction and jobless growth as the economic development and economic growth, income tax on fake incomes called interest on bank deposits always less than the inflation leaving no real income but loss, branding those that take to savings despite the loss of income and real capital value as tax evaders for the fake income...,my God, we are now in the black money economy, where the general outlook has to be the fraudulent outlook.

We are all under the tyranny of the presstitutes.
